The British banking giant is making progress in shrinking its consumer loan portfolio in the United States, which has been a drag on its earnings.
Private equity and venture capital firms last year committed $7.9 billion to invest in Latin America, although fund-raising was down significantly as smaller firms raised more than big firms.

Japan's record trade deficit demonstrated the two-edged nature of a weaker yen for corporate Japan, as higher import prices took an immediate toll on trade figures, while a hoped-for surge in exports still looks some time off.
The widening gap is likely to serve as a reminder to Prime Minister Shinzo Abe, who came to power with a pledge to reverse deflation and the yen's excessive strength, that Japan's economic problems will not simply disappear with a weaker currency.
