So I was thinking about this scene today.

Peter sustains a hit to his face, damaging his newly constructed mask and revealing part of his face. He angles himself away, hoping to keep his identity concealed from Otto. "Such a disappointment... Parker." Peter is stunned, and slowly turns to face him. "You knew?" "I tried to warn you, Peter. But you didn't listen." "You knew!"

When Peter first begins the fight against Otto, he pleads with him to come to reason. He's desperate to reach the good that he believes still exists inside his mentor and friend.

"You knew?"

Then Peter learns that Otto has known he is Spider-Man. And despite this, Otto went after him anyway. He sent the other villains after him, he got in Peter's way of securing the anti-serum needed to many lives -- including that of Aunt May's -- and he attacked him and almost killed him, essentially leaving him for dead on the floor of an Oscorp lab.

"You knew!"

From this point on, Peter stops pleading. He feels hurt and betrayed. Everything that comes out of his mouth is anger and pain.

There were never any quips in either half of this fight. This fight is too serious. It's do or die time. The first half is a desperate call to reason, and the second is a trauma response.

If you haven't, I would recommend listening to this fight's track in the soundtrack. It's absolutely my favorite, but it tells the story of this fight in the music. The first half is mostly dominated by Doc Ock's theme, while the second is overtaken by Spider-Man's more hopeful and defiant theme. Both themes are present throughout the entire track, and neither theme truly emerges as victorious, (and if you've seen the way the fight ends, it makes sense), as they constantly battle with each other in a question/answer sort of format.

And as a final thought, the mask breaking serves a double purpose. First of course is to inform the audience and Peter that Otto already knew he was Spider-Man. But it also signifies that after the revelation, the fight is no longer just Spider-Man's to fight, but Peter's too.

I love this game's story so much.

Thinking about the ending of Spider-Man: Brand New Day (spoilers under the cut)

Thinking about how Peter's spider-sense pulled him out of Jean's telepathic hold on him.

Thinking about him taking the bullet meant for Jean, his feet sliding across the floor with the force of the bullet that didn't reach her. Then he collapses with the grace of a ton of falling bricks.

Thinking a lot about Frank's reaction -- taken aback that Spider-Man was willing to take the bullet for her, and instant regret that he shot him. Thinking about how Frank is someone who does not do well with knowing that he hurt someone other than his target. How, despite how chaotic he seems, how sometimes it seems like all he leaves behind him is collateral damage, he's typically very careful and very calculating. He doesn't pull the trigger unless he knows where that bullet will land. He doesn't walk into a hospital in Hell's Kitchen with a gun without knowing he's not going to hit anyone other than his target. And if he even thinks that innocent people got hurt because of a lapse in judgement he made, it can be enough to break him. Sure, Spider-Man intentionally moved into the line of fire. He could rationalize to himself that it was Spider-Man's fault, not his. But to Frank, he should have anticipated that. To Frank, it's his fault the kid is hurt.

And so he carries him into the hospital himself. And he makes sure that only those who absolutely need to will see his face. And he keeps watch outside the room until he's allowed inside the room, where he continues guarding the younger hero, even though (and maybe because) there's someone else sharing the space in there. He sleeps there, lightly, like he was trained to years ago, so that when Peter barely croaks out his name, his voice quieter than Frank's snoring, he's instantly awake and alert, and fighting with Peter to keep him from removing his oxygen mask.

Thinking about how Peter spent four years pretty much alone, but when he woke up in the hospital, he wasn't.

And then... even though he gave him shit earlier for always wearing a mask, even when drinking coffee... Frank puts on Peter's mask and gloves, and plays the role of masked vigilante, something he hates, so the kid can limp out of the hospital without a fuss.

Matt's heightened senses allow him to be Daredevil, and to do a number of other things that you would not expect of someone who is totally blind, but they don't – and here's the kicker – actually make him sighted. Part of the irony of Matt's peculiar condition is that if his senses actually did compensate for his blindness in any and all situations, he wouldn't have to "pretend to be blind" in the first place. I kind of hope, that while Matt is in prison, some of the prisoners like Powell, try to bully him into stopping "pretending" he's blind, only for him to school them in the fact that yes, he is indeed blind, but no, he doesn't need functioning eyes to kick their asses.

Was Heather's book the same one she talked to Matt about writing in season 1? It's been, what, a year since then? If that? Seems like a really fast turn around for researching, writing, editing, and publishing. Is even any good?

DDBA season 2 finale thoughts (positive)

God I love watching Matt be a lawyer. I'm so glad they didn't deprive us of that this season. They had Matt listening to Fisk's heartbeat as he walked in, which I feel like hasn't been done in a while, so it was a nice return.

And of course Fisk said "when I was a boy" again. I think they have to know it's a meme at this point.

And Matt answering Fisk from another room like he also had super hearing….

I'm betting that guy spent his final few moments of life really regretting cosplaying as Bullseye.

So we've got Heather going down the route of turning into Lady Muse, which I'm totally here for, and is making her a much more interesting character than she was in season 1. Love that Matt showing up in court while she was on the stand kind of threw her off balance a little. And while I think Karen owes her a couple… Hochberg deserved that.

Now, I need to understand something… Fisk was offered a deal to leave the city and he wouldn't be prosecuted. Ignoring the fact that that's incredibly gross, and just another example of the rich and powerful facing no consequences (I mean, yeah I know for Fisk, leaving the city is a big fucking deal I think he'd almost rather be in prison if it was on NYC soil), how is that offer still good after he assaults and murders dozens of people in the courthouse?? Self defense claim?

Really enjoyed seeing Angela go at it in the hallway. Was really, really hoping Jessica would get a second go at Powell, but he's in prison, so there's that I guess. You know he and Matt are going at it again.

We got more Brett. We got a picture of Ben Urich. We got MITCHELL ELLISON in person! When I say I screamed, that's not hyperbole. I want more Ellison. Give us more Ellison. You took Foggy away from us, I need more Brett, and Ellison, and Josie, and Jessica, and Luke, and Claire (do it cowards), and Maggie (do it cowards), etc, to feel better. (But honestly, I'm still holding out hope he's in witness protection. This show could go on for 10 more years, and end, and we never see Foggy again, and I'll still tell you that they just never got a chance to reveal it. But I mean, with Matt in prison, we're barreling towards that panel in Brubaker's run).

And, I just want to say, I'm not sure how I feel about the identity reveal. It makes sense. It's totally something Matt would do. There's comic precedent. But losing the secret identity is bittersweet, and I always prefer when superheroes have secret identities. I usually prefer stories that deal with those. (But hey, maybe in season 3 we'll get him somehow winning his trial, and then there will still be a ton of doubters and skeptics who will be like "you can't convince me that blind lawyer is daredevil," and then they can do something with that.)

But Matt playing that card, taking away Fisk's leverage over him, owning that courtroom? Beautiful. Liked that better than the final confrontation, tbh.

Also, Mr Charles is Mr Robinson now, lol. I hope he comes back next season, and beyond, and I hope he has a different name in every new appearance.

Overall… I really enjoyed season 2. I said after the first episode of the season, it's a vast improvement over season 1. It's not the OG show, it's just not there, but it was something I wanted to watch. At first, I found myself thinking about how it didn't quite have the gravitas of say, the OG season 3 finale. But then I really thought about it… I appreciate that they managed to change up Fisk's defeat. Essentially saying "we can't just keep doing this cycle." Matt putting Fisk in jail… Fisk rebuilding his empire… on and on it goes… So really, Fisk wasn't really accepting the attorney general's deal, he was accepting Matt's deal from a couple episodes ago -- the only way this ends is if they both leave the city. (Time will tell how long that lasts).

So in last night’s episode (season 2 episode 6), when Karen said she still has nightmares about Wesley, I immediately thought about this short fic I wrote years ago, and was so happy to think that it fits with canon.
