My problems with the new PJO show coming up.

Look, when the casting announcement for the PJO trio was announced I got so excited, I was glad that the cast was NOT all white and that for once in their LIVES hollywood/disney actually CAST poc people and not white people, after all that Rick has written with his books full of stereotypes and little research on many cultures. The excitement however, only lasted for only 2 minutes until the realization hit me, so here’s what hit me.
While I’m glad Annabeth is black, there is some problems about that.
In some portions of the book Annabeth hits Percy and calls him names, many in the anti-percabeth tag have addressed this, and what is concerning me is that if we do get this side of Annabeth on screen people are gonna hate on her even MORE and call her abusive like they’ve already have AND it’s going to feed into the stereotype of black people being aggressive and I. DONT. WANT. THAT.
Second of all, in the books Frederick Chase is described by Annabeth as a not so great father and while he does sorta redeem himself by saving his daughter in the Titan’s Curse, it’s gonna further feed into the stereotype of black father’s being neglectful and once more, I. DON’T. WANT. THAT. (this is with me keeping in mind, that if Annabeth is black, it’s more logical for Frederick to be as well.)
Third of all, I’m seeing fanart of people drawing Annabeth black, but WHITEWASHING HER FEATURES.
ARE YOU FUCKING KIDDING ME?!
YOU’RE DOING THE EXACT SAME YOU’VE BEEN DOING TO HAZEL, LEO, PIPER, REYNA, FRANK AND BASICALLY EVERY POC CHARACTER RICK HAS INTRODUCED FOR YEARS.
EITHER GIVE ANNABETH HER ORIGINAL BLACK FEATURES SUCH AS BROWN HAIR, EYES AND SKIN OR DON’T DRAW HER AT ALL.
I’m glad Grover is a desi Indian, truly, but there’s some problems with that, or at least a main one that’s been plagueing my mind since the cast was announced.
Grover is a satyr, we know that.
My problem with this is that this is associating animal features to a certain race, and this has happened a LOT in history. (Social darwinism anyone?) Anyone who WASN’T european was categorized as inferior and less developed back in the late 19th century and early 20th century. And it’s freaking me out, it’s not only bad, but VERY risky.
Second, we know that Grover can get anxious and such and it’s fine to be scared, but this will feed into harmful stereotypes, (anyone remember Raj Mandeli?) (see this post for more info). This will feed into a harmful stereotype and make a joke about people’s culture.
Also, I’ve seen people complaining about Walker not having green eyes and black hair and people hoping he’ll have green contacts and black hair, but Rick has specified that they are NOT interested in doing that. Also it’s disrespecful of you guys putting what YOU want and sticking it to how YOU wished the cast looked like, and NOT accepting what they look like.
