i know we all love the headcanon that there are statues and plaques and general monuments of and to Grace all over the world, and similarly for Yao and Ilyukhina, and i also am a huge fan of that.

but i think, to a much smaller degree, there are statues of one other person: Irina Petrova.

maybe they aren’t as grand and maybe there aren’t as many, but they’re still there. after all, if not for her noticing the astrophage line and asking her peers for help and advice identifying what it was, they wouldn’t have known about the threat in time to fix it.

for all the people who loved Twisters (it’s me, i’m people) i feel it’s my duty as a librarian and fellow storm/weather/storm chaser enjoyer to inform you that this book recently got published. i wouldn’t have known about it at all if i wasn’t in charge of labeling all the books in the library and getting them ready to go on the shelf. it’s called Chase Me If You Can, by Heather Frances, and i genuinely enjoyed it!

very, very rarely do i read a romance novel, but this was the exception. i skipped the spicy scenes (just not my thing) but the story was actually incredible and so thoughtful. again i don’t usually read romance but i would happily reread this one in future.

(also you can’t tell me that’s not Tyler Owens with a few tattoos on that cover, and i’m not mad about it. man even has a texas accent and a longhorns ball cap and is a social media star. that is the Tornado Wrangler himself)

thinking about the journey to Erid. most importantly, board games and the ensuing chaos that comes with Rocky learning how to play. it started off as clumsy and hastily put together versions Grace made with items from around the Hail Mary, but Rocky decided he wanted exact replicas of the images on Grace’s computers, so he made them. it didn’t take long for him to get annoyed with having to ask Grace to move the pieces for him, so pretty soon he’s made an upgraded xenonite suit that’s more functional (which he already proved to himself he could do when he made one for Grace to tour his ship).

the chaos intensifies because now Rocky has complete control over how he plays the games. jenga especially is where he excels, because his calculations are always perfect. the tower never falls on his turn, and Grace always loses.

the game of life is one of his favorites to play, not because he’s particularly good at it, but because he feels like he gets a fun glimpse into life on earth.

monopoly? Rocky could not care less about the actual game, but he has an entire collection of little pieces he can play as depicting all manner of inanimate objects and animals from earth.

by the time the two of them make it to Erid they’ve played hundreds of games from all over earth, and many from Erid, too.

as Grace ages, his eyesight naturally gets worse and his glasses no longer help. when he offhandedly mentions his more-blurry-than-usual vision to Rocky one day, Rocky first freaks out, and then, after Grace patiently explains why human eyesight gets worse the longer a person lives, Rocky immediately consults the laptop Grace gave him. he studies the shape of various lenses, he consults images of frames, and he shares the problem with Adrian. he becomes mildly obsessed with glasses and wonders again at the oddity of the human body and the need for eyesight at all.

but after a few days, Rocky knocks on Grace’s door and behind him is a container nearly overflowing with the hundreds of glasses he’s made. there is every style Grace could possibly think of, and a few of Rocky’s own designs, all with clear xenonite lenses. what follows is hours of trying on frames and finding the most accurate lenses and joyful shenanigans, and Grace fondly thinks of the day they were trying to find a good voice for Rocky.

in the end Grace chooses one of Rocky’s designs. what else was he going to pick?

i NEED people to realise foreshadowing is. in fact. a literary device. and not a Bad Thing. the audience picking up on your hints is a Good Thing. because. it makes the story and it’s conclusion make sense. and some people will not see those but enjoy seeing them on a second read through. red herrings are one thing but if your novel consists of nothing but red herrings it’s not a coherent story it’s just a collection of paragraphs that don’t actually plausibly link to one another. you're not fighting with the audience you don’t look clever you look like you don’t know how basic fiction works. be vulnerable for once in your goddamn life and don't treat writing like a game to be won where the audience losing is a good thing.

My favorite thing about fanfic authors is they can identify any gap in a canon timeline where characters are offscreen and exploit the ever living fuck out of it

Turns out having a newfound half-brother comes with unsolicited opinions about your uneventful love life this started as just an exercise and turned into a ten days hell for some reason lmaooooo As a big fan of the campfire scene with Roran and Eragon at the beginning of brisingr, I wanted to give my own personal rendition of an hypothetical equivalent scene but with Murtagh.....please god let him and saphira fight 24/7 because it would be so fucking funny

You know, in other circumstances I might dislike making a character immortal, but I think that the Eridian medical thrum were faced with the choice between trying to solve Rocky's severe co-dependence and PTSD in less than thirty years time OR unlocking the secrets of the human genome and turning off Grace's aging and felt that the latter was a MUCH more realistic prospect.
