Imagine how good Will's arc of self-acceptance could have been (even without byler) if the duffers had just... had a thought in their head and remembered even a thing from s1.

It could have been a story about a boy living in a homophobic smalltown during the aids crisis. A boy who grew up hearing his own father and his peers call him a fag. A boy who was abused in the worst way, who hated himself and thought he was disgusting because as he got older he realised that all those people were right about him. Will's story could have been so powerful if they'd have focused on him overcoming the homophobia and abuse he was put through for years, both by the Upside Down and the people of hawkins. That's how you write a story about someone learning to love themselves.

Instead we got a story about a boy who learned to accept himself only once he'd gotten over his crush on his """straight""" best friend because queer feelings hold queer people back apparently. And homophobia wasn't even mentioned in his arc again after s1.

romance as a subplot is SOOOOO GOODDDDD because 98% of the time it's an intense slowburn that develops over several chapters. the story focuses on the plot or character development more but somehow it makes the romance SO MUCH BETTER!!! idk how to explain it it's just so good...like when an author's focus is more on characters and plot it gives you as the reader a deeper connection to the characters which makes the romantic/platonic aspect so much better
