white dress || throye || flashback
It had only been a few hours since Troye had arrived in Toronto and she was especially excited to see a certain someone that she hadn’t seen in ages. She had already checked in to their hotel and put her small luggage in their room before whisking off to the airport to pick up none other than her favorite mermaid. Although Troye was exhausted from driving, it was worth it to see her best friend.
She pulled up in the pick up area of the airport and waited patiently for Thea. When she saw the familiar mop of blonde hair, Troye got out from the car and ran to her. “Thea!” She exclaimed, pulling her in to the hug.
It was hard for Thea to leave Griffin and her kids, even if it were only for a long weekend. It was the first time that she'd be away from Noelle and Parker, and even though Griffin was perfectly capable of taking care of them, she was still nervous. But her best friend was getting married, and well she needed a wingwoman. After almost missing her flight because she was giving extra kisses to her family, Thea settled in for a long flight.
After what felt like forever, Thea finally got off the plane. She picked up coffees for the two of them at the food court before finally venturing outside. The good thing was, it wasn't much colder than Switzerland. Before she could pull out her phone to call Troye, she was being pulled into a bear hug by the one and only. "T!!! You're gonna make me spill the coffees!"
Christmas with the Reeds
Griffin held his breath as he and Thea stared at their son. Since he had been born, he had hoped that Parker had inherited his species. Not that he would have been disappointed if he had turned out a mermaid or even human, but the idea of raising a dragon and teaching him about his lineage and family was something Griffin had been looking forward to. But when Parker put the tiny icicle in his hand, he could hardly believe what he was seeing. The little icicle he held in his hand, was actual proof that Parker was a dragon, just like him. “That’s right buddy, like daddy. I’m so proud of you.” Griffin said, his voice choked with pride. He picked Parker up and kissed his cheek, choked up over the discovery. Before he could do anything else, Noelle came over from where Thea was crouched and threw herself over Griffin’s leg, squealing with delight. “Daddy, Daddy! Parker like Daddy!" She giggled, hugging Griffin’s thigh. Looking up at Thea, Griffin grinned as he picked Noelle up, giving her a quick eskimo kiss. "What were you saying about them not saying daddy first?"
Thea stared at her children with disbelief. But in a way she wasn't surprised. After a year and a half of being a mother, Thea had found that often felt that everything was happening at once. Every milestone in her children's lives seemed to be accompanied by another one, and here it was happening again. Parker was showing his first signs of being a dragon, and at the same time, both of her children had just said 'daddy' for the first time. Plus, to top it all off, it was Christmas. Although she wasn't going to admit it, she was a little disappointed that they said daddy before mommy, but Thea knew that was stupid. Laughing, she looked at Griffin. "They only know how to say daddy because I have to remind them that they have a daddy," she teased him. Thea picked up her son, kissing his cheek. "Good job baby, can you make one for mommy?" Parker giggled, opening his palm to show another icicle. "Me! Me! Me!" Noelle cooed, her own hand outstretched. "Something tells me that we're gonna have a lot of puddles from melted icicles on our hands," she sighed, but smiling all the same.
Christmas with the Reeds
"Well I wish they would knock it off." Griffin’s voice was joking, but there was a trace of seriousness. These were his babies, but they weren’t going to be babies much longer. And before long, they would be moving out and having families of their own. It made Griffin want to freeze time. "Must be from your side of the family." He said nonchalantly, grinning down at his wife. Griffin stayed on the couch as Thea got up to check on Noelle, knowing that she would want her mommy anyway. His eyes stayed on Parker, watching as he arranged his toys in different groups. But when Parker made his way into the other room where Thea and his sister were, his attention turned back to the the TV, until he heard Thea’s question. "What? No. The last ice I gave Parker was last week, it’s melted by now." Griffin said, walking into the room. The door leading out onto the balcony was locked, so he couldn’t have gotten it from the railing. Griffin’s heart beat picked up, and he shot Thea a glance, but he couldn’t let himself hope too much. Crouching down next to his son, he took the icicle out of his hand. "Where’d you get this from, little man?" He asked softly.
Thea looked at Parker, not believing what she was seeing. If Griffin didn't give him the ice, and there was no way he could have gotten it from outside, then the only explanation was that he made it himself. But there had been no previous signs that Parker was a dragon like Griffin, as much as her husband had been hoping for something that would prove their son's species. She watched as Parker handed the icicle to Griffin. He looked so proud of himself. Thea's eyes grew wide as another little icicle materialized in Parker's hands. She knelt down next to him and Griffin, smiling widely. "That's good baby," she said to him, showing him that what he'd done was a good thing. Parker opened his palm to show her, a huge smile on his face. "Like Daddy," he giggled, looking at Griffin.
Christmas with the Reeds
"It’s my job to question your parenting skills. It keeps you on your toes." Griffin retorted, winking at her while she glared at him. He knew that she was only teasing. When the children were first born, they’d had a long talk about how they planned to parent their children, and they were in agreements on almost everything. Plus, Griffin would never blatantly question her parenting skills in front of the children. "Why can’t they just fall asleep on my chest like they did when they were babies?" He said with a sigh as Noelle climbed down from his lap, waddling after her brother. With the kids occupied with their toys, Griffin tossed his arm over Thea’s shoulders and pulled her into him. "Why do you think he brings his toys into the living room?" He asked, watching Parker.
"Because they're growing up," Thea said with a sigh, watching Noelle leave too. Although watching them grow was exciting, she wished it was a slow down. Of course she loved Noelle and Parker, but Thea knew that she wouldn't be able to have any more children, and that made her want to cherish these moments even more. She settled against his side, smiling as she watched Parker. "I think he just likes to show off," she chuckled. Their son had figured out pretty quickly that the living room was where Thea and Griffin would often spend time with any guests that they had over, and Parker loved being the center of attention. "I wonder where he gets that from." Hearing Noelle start to cry from the other room, Thea got up to check on her. "Shh, baby it's okay." She said picking up Noelle once she saw that she was crying about pile of blocks falling over. As Thea rocked Noelle back and forth, Parker waddled over to her with something in his hand. "What do you have there buddy?" Parker opened his tiny handed, proudly showing his mother a little icicle. "Griffin? Have you been giving the kids ice to play with again?"
Christmas with the Reeds
"I’m an old man Thea, I need sleep to be able to function properly. Plus, I need my beauty sleep!" Griffin yelled back, setting Noelle down on the ground to grab the remote that had fallen behind the TV. Straightening back up, he clicked play on the remote, leaning back as the previews began to show on the screen. His focus was torn from the screen when he felt Noelle’s tiny hand wrap around his index finger. He kissed the top of her head, smiling up at Thea when she came back into the room. "Thank you darling." He said, as he took the mug from her hand. "I still get that excited about cookies, I don’t know what you’re talking about." He said with a laugh, following Thea back to the couch and scooping Noelle into his lap. "They might actually stay awake through the whole movie if we keep giving them sugar."
"It's just one cookie, Griffin. I'm starting to think that you're questioning my parenting skills." She huffed, glaring at him. But Thea was just teasing him, she could never get mad at Griffin. He was everything she could ask for and more. "Besides, do you think they're actually going to pay attention to this? Within in minutes they're going to want to get up and run around and tire themselves out. Relax." And Thea was right. Not even fifteen minutes into the movie, Parker was squirming on Thea's lap. She finally set him down on the ground, and the boy ran straight to the playroom, probably to get all of his toys. It was Parker's habit to take all of his toys from the playroom and bring them into the living room, only to leave them in a pile and not play with them. "See what I mean?"
Christmas with the Reeds
Griffin loved these cozy nights in with his family. He had wanted a family that was whole and loving since his father had died, and he finally had one. His children were more amazing than he could have ever hoped for, even if they wouldn’t say daddy. And though he didn’t want them to grow up, he couldn’t wait until they were old enough to have conversations with. “I don’t even think they really know what movies are.” He replied. “So the only explanation is that they love me more” Rolling his eyes, Griffin picked up Noelle as soon as Thea set her down on the couch and bounced her on his lap. “You’re underestimating your son’s love for me, Thea. We have a special dragon bond.” Griffin assured her, even though he hadn’t yet seen any evidence that Parker even was a dragon. “Yes please.” He replied, standing up to put the movie in, Noelle resting against his hip. “Sugar before bed? We’re gonna be up all night.”
Thea went into the kitchen and put some hot water on for the hot chocolate. "It's Christmas Eve, Griffin. Live a little!" She said from the kitchen, getting everything ready. Within a few minutes she came back with the two mugs for them and two cookies for the kids. Parker saw the two cookies in her hand, and he reached for his, a goofy grin on his face. "Well aren't a smart one." Thea laughed, kissing her baby on the forehead before placing the cookie in his hands. She walked over to Griffin who was still by the TV getting it all ready. "Does my sweet little girl want a cookie too?" She said, grinning as her face lit up. "I wish I still got this excited about cookies." Thea laughed, giving it to her daughter. "This movie used to my favorite, y'know." She said to her husband as she settled onto the couch, pulling Parker onto her lap.
Christmas with the Reeds
Griffin shrugged, a mischievous grin on his face. “I had to stop these trouble makers from turning their food fight into a food war.” He replied, bending over to pick the apple ammunition off of the floor. After throwing it away, Griffin walked over to the pie and smelled it. “Oh it’ll definitely taste great.” He assured her, placing a kiss on her cheek before making his way back to the children. “Did you hear mommy? Who wants to watch the Grinch?” Griffin asked, grinning as both of the twins squealed with delight and reached out for him. “Uh Thea, they totally love me more.” He teased, reminding her of their ongoing argument of who the kids loved more. Picking up Parker, he blew a raspberry against the boy’s cheek. “Can you say daddy?” He asked the boy for the umpteenth time that week. He was trying to get the kids to say daddy before they said mommy, just to mess with Thea, but he hadn’t been successful yet.
Thea never got tired of watching Griffin interact with their kids. It was easy to see how much he loved them, and it just made her feel so lucky that she had him in her life. It was moments like these that made her feel lucky in general, considering she never imagined that her life would end up like this. "You're delusional, they just love movies." She teased him, picking up Noelle. Balancing her daughter on her hip, she walked into the living room. "There is no way he's going to say Daddy before he says Mommy and you know it." Thea insisted, placing Noelle in the center of the couch next to her brother. "Do you want hot chocolate? I think I'm going to make some, to really get in the spirit," she said with a smile. "Plus I think these cuties deserve a sugar cookie."
Christmas with the Reeds
Griffin smiled as he watched Noelle and Parker munch happily away at their apple slices, letting out a small chuckle as Noelle threw a bitten piece of apple at her brother. They were both growing up too fast for Griffin’s liking. He used to be able to hold them for hours, taking comfort in the fact that they needed him. But now that they were one and a half, he was lucky if he could get them to sit with him for a few minutes, they were so energetic. “Catch.” He said, tossing the oven mitt to Thea as he went to stop the brewing food fight between the twins. “The pie smells great, honey.” He said with a grin, eating a piece of apple as he tussled Parker’s hair.
"Did you really have to throw it?" She sighed, rolling her eyes at him. Their house was pretty noisy, with their twins constantly running around and Griffin was never one to be quiet either. But Thea wouldn't have had it any other way. Once the pie was taken care of, she quickly put the dishes in the dishwasher so she could give her full attention to her family. "It's gonna taste great too. Well hopefully," she said with a laugh. Both the kids were in Christmas sweaters that Troye had sent in the mail, and she wanted to take pictures, but she already had about fifty on her phone, just from that day alone. "Come on, let's go watch a movie. It's about time they've seen the Grinch."
Christmas with the Reeds
It was their second Christmas in Switzerland, and Griffin and Thea were trying to make it better than the last. Noelle and Parker were growing older each day, and they knew that sooner or later that their babies wouldn't be babies anymore. So that Christmas was all about making memories, with decorating the house, taking the kids to get their pictures taken with Santa, buying new ornaments, well the whole shebang. "Griffin, can you hand me that oven mitt?" Thea asked, ready to take out the apple pie for tomorrow night's Christmas dinner. She looked over at Parker and Noelle, who were both sitting in their high chairs, munching on extra apple slices.
