Bronze “Queen Mother” head from Benin in west Africa, early 1500s. Benin, by the early 16th century, was a significant empire in the region with an impressive tradition of government-sponsored metal arts. Heads like this were often portraits of ancestors that were placed on the altar of a dead ruler by those that succeeded him. Queen mothers were especially respected in the culture of Benin.
