Just finished watching @elchicanofilm with my sister @kirstenashbury. This is the same theater that many of us, including hometown hero @raulcastillo, roamed in our middle school & high school days. Only now HEāS THE LEAD ACTION HERO IN A MOVIE PLAYING AT THE SAME MOVIE THEATER YALL! This movie really gave a voice to not only being Mexican American but the role of law enforcement in our community. It will definitely start up a much needed conversation. Early last year when I agreed to do an interview with Rachel Ecklund & David Modigliani outside of the RGV Toros stadium, the day before yet another one of the town halls I was organizing as a volunteer for @betoorourke, never did I ever expect to go on this journey. Every so often, before a Beto event I was helping with or once I began my work with Battleground Texas, theyād call me up, ask to hook me up to a mic & follow me around with a camera. I was told to just be myself, yikes, so I was. They met my amazing Momma, my republican Step dad, my partner, sister, & dad. The documentary team followed me to voter registration events, community rallies & to my moms for meals filled with hard political conversations Iād bring up to my Step dad because, well, they said to be myself. It is normal for me to ask ācontroversialā questions to people with opposing beliefs, even my parents. They filmed me doing what I always do, organizing my community & showing others how to activate the power we all have inside of us. For some itās the right to vote; for others itās the right to speak out. Never did I ever realize when I said yes to being on this film, Iād be saying yes to the ride of a lifetime. Yesterday I saw the @runningwithbeto documentary in its entirety & it truly is an amazing film. The team did such an incredible job. They encapsulated not just how insane Betoās campaign was but how real the activism that Shannon, Marcel & myself engage in on a daily basis. I took this picture while I was on stage at the Paramount Theater after the film was over, as the Q & A was happening so I wouldnāt forget it. So I wouldnāt forget how incredible of an opportunity this is for my voice to be one of many voices to amplify the issues we face down at the border & in south Texas. I took it so I would remember how big of a blessing this entire experience has been. Thank you so much to the documentary team for allowing me to share my story & lift up my community. Thank you to everyone who shared kind words with me. Everyone will be able to catch the film on @hbo on May 28. I canāt wait to see where this insane ride takes us. I met a group of border explorers over a year ago through my work against the border wall. Those explorers created a film about the Rio Grande River & their journey down it. Last night I was able to sit on a panel at the @wildfilmtour to discuss some of the work the @rgvnoborderwall movement has been doing for the past few years & all the amazing non conventional acts of resistance our community is participating in now. Today over 40 Rio Grande Valley natives along with our tribal relatives (many not pictured) walked to our ancestor Monty, the 900 year old Montezuma Cypress tree, poured 50 gallons of water on its roots. This tree sits in Abram, Texas just beyond the fence in the no man's land.
