There’s something about the way he looks in the firelight, John thinks. The way amber fills the hollows of his cheeks, shapes the curve of his brow, licks auburn into the rounds of his curls.

There is no doubt that Sherlock Holmes is beautiful, John thinks.

He wishes the clouds had abated, though, just for tonight. He wishes for the dazzling contrast of firelight warming his face from the front and moonlight cooling his hair from behind. The way white would catch at the bow of each wave to arrange a celestial illusion around his portrait: a halo. It would be breath-taking.

John’s staring. He knows he is and he knows he should stop, only Sherlock is staring, too. Staring back at him with those impossible eyes and somehow knowing every one of John’s thoughts, no doubt, if not from something like an unconscious flare of his nostrils then certainly from the hot blush of pink blossoming in his cheeks. But Sherlock hasn’t stopped staring, so John won’t, either. He can feel his pulse as it hammers in his throat; choking beats of his nervous heart. But Sherlock is seeing, and he’s not turning away or pulling a face or making a joke, and under any normal circumstances John knows that this is the point at which you’re supposed to close your eyes and lean in and kiss them, but this is Sherlock and he can’t silence the voice in his head that is reminding him that the man probably doesn’t even realise what he’s doing.

John thinks he might just kiss him anyway.

It feels impossible not to.

It will be finished! I have the next five chapters written that will be leading into the final part, it's just my beautiful beta and I haven't had the time to go through them and make them make sense yet (because they absolutely do not make sense right now lmao) BUT BY THE GODS IT WILL BE DONE

I have a super exciting different fic to post when it is complete but I'm not allowing myself to do anything until Backbite is finished, because let's be honest, we all deserve closure on that at this point...
