Paris, or, incomprehensible violence around the world
Maybe this is late and maybe I’ve missed the trend and people don’t care about this anymore, but I can’t stop thinking about the attacks in Paris and Beirut and Baghdad. It is a tragedy on so many levels and I still can’t process it. I still can’t really understand or articulate my feelings so this won’t be eloquent but I just needed to write something down.
I can’t stop thinking about the people at that concert. They were kids, they were my age or they were younger. They just went to a concert. They were probably having the time of their lives and then out of no where violence came into their lives. They just went to a concert. That phrase keeps echoing through my head over and over and over again. It hits home in a way that other attacks, other acts of violence never have. Those people who died, those people who saw what happened, they are me, in a different life, or possibly even later in this life. The unfairness of their deaths is almost too much for me to understand.
And then there’s the tragedy of what will happen to the Syrian refugees who are fleeing these same horrors and looking for safety in Europe and the US. Every time I hear about Trump’s ideas for a religious test for refugees, or hear someone saying we should close our borders, I just want to cry. Over and over again history has proved that fear and ignorance is not the answer to tragedy. These people are running from very same tragedies that recently struck Paris, Beirut and Baghdad. They are running for their lives because it is all they can do. By refusing to help people because of their religion we become no better than terrorists, or countless other oppressors that we as Americans claim to fight against. By closing borders and withholding aid, we alienate potential allies, lend credence to claims of a war between Islam and the West, but most importantly deny the humanity of those in need by refusing to see them as anything more than a set of labels that differs from our own. The recent terrorist attacks are inexcusable and incomprehensible, but the answer is not to isolate ourselves, or to ignore those that we can help as that will only lead to more suffering. Instead the answer should be one of compassion and rational thought so that hopefully we can prevent future tragedies like these recent ones.

On Halloween
Halloween has ALWAYS been my favorite holiday. Don’t get me wrong I’m one of the first people to break out my Christmas sweaters and will consistently end up in a four day food coma from Thanksgiving - but there’s just something about Halloween that really just gets me going. I think it’s because of the absurdity of it all. That and the nostalgia.
When I was a kid, we GOT INTO Halloween. Like really got into it. We were basically the Aadams family. Some of my best memories of childhood are from Halloween and getting ready for Halloween, so as strange as it might seem I always get a warm fuzzy feeling starting in mid-October.
I’ve always been drawn to the absurd. For as long as I can remember, I’ve always been that person who was never quite right. I never quite fit into what I was supposed to be - there was always a bit that stuck out. I think I love Halloween so much because it’s finally a time when everyone is absurd.
