rhiannon typically regresses to 1-3. she doesn't know how to identify it or label it; she just knows that certain things make her feel "off"
her regression is something she initially hates about herself. rhiannon firmly believes it's another quirk, another flaw, another thing that drives people away. but after some time, she begins to accept that maybe it's just a thing that happens.
still, rhiannon tells herself that nobody can ever know - not that she has anyone to confide in. but she's terrified of being othered even further and she knows this is something she'd be bullied for. similarly to her autism though, she's never been great at masking.
tink is rhiannon's biggest source of comfort. he's always been her best friend & animals (especially dogs) have been her special interest for as long as she can remember.
rhiannon self soothes by holding him close, petting his fur, and repetitively stroking between his ears. when he barks, she likes to bark back and pretend they're having conversations.
when tink dies, rhiannon struggles a lot with being little. she finds herself feeling small more often and not knowing how to handle her feelings. she has no way of coping, no way of regulating, and no one to help calm her down.
identifying and managing her feelings is something rhiannon has a hard enough time with when she's big. so when she's little - it's a skill she lacks entirely. this leads to everything exploding, as it so often does when she bottles it up.
rhiannon's meltdowns are long and messy. she cries and screams as loudly as she can - knowing there's no one there to hear her. and when that isn't enough, she throws her bedding, pillows, clothing, and whatever else she can get her hands on.
the come downs, however, feels even worse than the breakdown. rhiannon finishes finding herself too small and too tired to independently clean up her mess. the guilt of it consumes her - she wants a nice house and doesn't understand why she can't keep it clean. but the idea of picking everything up is much too overwhelming for her to entertain
rhiannon tries her best to self soothe in this state. she cries quietly and repetitively strokes her hair, reminding herself it's all there. but she wishes she had someone else to do it for her.
if she can manage to pick herself up off the floor (sometimes even walking is too much in that state), rhiannon will drag herself to the kitchen where tinks bed is. there, she curls up on the old mattress, slips her thumb into her mouth, and cries herself to sleep.

side note: i'm autistic & physically disabled myself and have done prior research on the impacts of unilateral hearing loss. but i'm not hoh - so please correct me if i get anything wrong!
~ jackie is sensory avoidant. she hates certain clothing textures and has aversions to various foods. because of this - she has a lot of rules that always need to be followed.
-> the main one is that jackie's food can't ever be touching. if it is - everything is automatically ruined. nat ends up buying her those plates with little dividers in them after one too many dinners get thrown away. jackie likes them so much she'll use them even when she isn't little.
-> similarly, jackie struggles with sharing clothes. she gets frequently upset in the beginning because she wants to wear nat's stuff for comfort - but she can't handle things like flannels or leather jackets touching her arms. it takes some time, but eventually her her and nat find a few of nat's t-shirts, sweats, and boxers that jackie likes wearing. when nat does laundry - she makes sure to always use unscented detergent/fabric softener so jackie won't get overstimulated by them.
~ jackie struggles a lot with movement. losing an ear disrupts the vestibular system - making balance, coordination, spatial awareness, and other motor skills challenging for her.
~ she gets frustrated/emotional at this rather quickly. but especially when she isn't able to do things that used to come easily. sometimes, this leads to meltdowns.
-> meltdowns always make jackie feel even younger. this causes her to get even more upset because it adds to the "out of control" feeling that caused her to break in the first place.
-> they also make jackie very clingy. she needs a lot of reassurance and physical comfort afterwards. nat will hold her in a deep pressure hug and remind her as much as she needs that it isn't her fault, she can't control the reactions her autism causes
~ nat also knows how to disguise accommodations so jackie won't reject them. she'll talk to her or ask jackie questions about her calico critter stories to keep her distracted while she puts her shoes on for her. or she'll tell jackie she's feeling lonely and wants to hold her hand when she walks around. this way - jackie has less reservations to accepting help.
~ jackie experiences tinnitus & headaches from hearing loss. they make it very hard for her to function because of how overstimulated she gets from the pain.
-> this is another thing that makes her very emotional. she's a sensitive girl in general, but when she's in pain, nat knows to be extra careful. jackie can (and will) cry over everything - wether it be from sadness or frustration
~ on bad pain days, nat will stay home with her. all jackie ever wants to do is snuggle in bed, which of course, nat is happy to do.
-> jackie is a very tactile person so nat spends a lot of time holding her, playing with her hair, and softly stroking her arms.
-> the nightstand is also always packed with jackie's safe snacks so that nat won't have to leave her when it's time to eat. nat often has to coax her into taking anything (the headaches make her nauseous) but she's always sure to praise her and remind her that she's so proud of jackie for trying.
~ jackie experiences a lot of grief over her disability. it isn't constant - but it comes in waves. there have been a few instances where she's looked up at nat with devastated, tear filled eyes and cried variations of "i don't want it to hurt anymore" and "make it stop, natty"
-> nat never knows how to respond to this, and it breaks her heart that she can't take away jackie's pain

The concept of the au is one featuring repressed ! regressor Nat and seasoned ! closeted ! regressor Jackie who hasn't told anyone at college of her regression out of shame in her hopes to make friends (and her past with Shauna being her caregiver while they dated pre-transition). When the popular ! Lottie Matthews who also happens to be Nat's roommate begins to bring up regression around Jackie, the girl assumes she's been found out and is being made fun of. With their being roommates, she assumes Nat has let it slip while drunk or high, which causes brief tension in their relationship. Little does Jackie know, Lottie herself is a flip who suspects a certain someone might regress as well. Cue a tearful confrontation of Lottie from Jackie, in which Jackie slips, Lottie goes into mama-mode mid confrontation, and the truth comes out.

it was a beautiful morning, you and lottie up earlier than usual. you kept hearing lottie cough and clear her throat next to you while you played with your toys on the floor next to her desk. she was on her laptop, probably doing important grown up things.
you spit your paci out, tugging on her sweatpants. “mama ‘kay?” you asked, looking up at her. lottie smiled, your innocence melting her heart like always. “mama’s alright, sweetie.” she said before immediately coughing again.
she could tell you were concerned, still feeling your grip on her sweatpant leg. “c’mere, you wanna come to the kitchen with mama?” she made grabby hands to pick you up, putting you on her hip.
lottie never gets sick, ever. she was going to the kitchen to make some tea because her throat felt like sandpaper every time she swallowed. you put your hand on her forehead, checking if she was warm. “mama sick?” you asked, noticing she looked paler than normal.
“yeah, mama’s feeling a little sick, baby. “but i’m okay.” she put you down on the couch to make her tea, but you had an idea. you ran off you get your blankie and a couple of your stuffies for lottie to make her feel better. after all, it’s what your mama would do for you when you’re feeling yucky.
when lottie turned around, you were gone. she furrowed her eyebrows, about to call out for you. then she heard you coming downstairs, seeing blankets in your hand. “what’ve you got there, sweetheart?” lottie smiled softly after sipping her tea.
you didn’t answer her question, walking back to her room, still holding those blankies. she followed with a curious smile, seeing you pat a spot next to you on her bed. “mamaaa,” you whined wanted her to play down.
she sat down finally, seeing your stuffies wrapped up in your blankies. she put her mug of tea on the night stand. “you brought your friends in here to hang out with mama?”
you nodded, pushing lottie down into the pillows gently. you wrapped her up in your blankies and gave her your stuffies to cuddle. “take care of you, mama.” you kissed her on the forehead.
lottie could feel her eyes welling up with tears, wiping one away discreetly before caressing your face. “you’re so sweet to mama. thank you.”
“gonna getchu snack, mama.” you hopped off bed, darting off to the kitchen. “don’t run, sweetheart.” lottie called out, making you slow down a little.
you poured out some of her favorite kettle chips in a bowl and poured her some juice in one of your sippy cups and a bottled water from the fridge. you came back with your hands full, setting the treats in lottie’s lap. “oh my goodness! what did you get mama, cutie?” she sniffled, grabbing a couple tissues from the beside table drawer.
“chips an juicy.” you pointed. “thank you, you’re such a sweetheart. my little angel.” lottie smiled, kissing your head. she didn’t want you to get sick, but you wanted to stay and hang out with your mama until she felt better. you cuddled up next to her, lottie letting you have her sippy cup of juice and turning on a show that you and her loved.
lottie took another sip of her tea, feeling the honey in it soothe her throat. “mama feel better?” you mumbled behind your paci. lottie kissed your head again, tickling your sides. “yes i am, darling, all thanks to you. thank you for taking care of mama.” she pinches your cheek, watching you blush.
it got a little later in the day, almost about noon. you kept looking at your mama, seeing her eyes get heavier by the second. “go nini, mama.” you brought the blanket up to her chest more, letting her rest her head on your shoulder.
lottie mumbled something incoherently before falling asleep, one of your stuffies clutched loosely on her arms. you gave her another kiss on the cheek before putting your paci back in and watching the rest of your show.
