The Effect of Storm (by R McGeehan)
Thessaloniki Train Cemetery (via Atlas Obscura)
Thousands of rusting train cars have been slowly falling apart on the edge of Greece’s second largest city.
Attempts have been made by the Hellenic Railways Organisation, Greece’s national rail company, to sell them as scrap metal but have been left to rot in their sidings since the 1980s. There are now thousands of disused carriages standing on the ten tracks in the suburb of Nea Ionia.
The Sahara (by Jody MacDonald)
Photographer Jody MacDonald hitched a ride through the Sahara Desert over a period of two months in 2015 with her surfboard in tow. The trip was meticulously planned for months, with the adventure being the culmination of a lifelong dream.

Labyrinth (by Jared Schiller)
This 30-minute documentary explores the ideas behind Mark Wallinger’s major artwork commission for London Underground, from the influence of Harry Beck’s Tube map to the Guinness Book of Records’ Tube Challenge, alongside personal responses to the artworks by travellers and Underground staff.
GNR Warehouse, Nottingham (by David Sillitoe)
Guardian photographer David Sillitoe captured these fantastic shots of Nottingham’s derelict Great Northern Railway grain warehouse.
The area surrounding the site has been the focus of a number of regeneration ideas over the years, although none of them have actually materialised.

Walking Times (via Transport for London)
TfL has drawn up this official map to highlight the walking times between tube stops in London - and in some cases it’s actually quicker to walk!

NYC Subway Timelapse: The Queens Line (by DJ Hammers)
YouTube user DJ Hammers has been posting cab-view videos of NYC subway lines. The real-time journeys are great, but the timelapse ones at 10-times speed are even better.

Inside Story - Old, Dirty & Late (via RAILvintageTV)
Half a million commuters poured into London on British Rail trains every day in the early 90s, and every day something went wrong with some part of the service.
The programme spends a week behind the scenes with Network SouthEast, revealing the problems that lie behind the commuters' misery, including overrunning weekend engineering works, blocked lines, suicides, security alerts and driver shortages.
Bring Back British Rail
Founded in 2009, Bring Back British Rail strives to popularise the common-sense idea of re-nationalising the ludicrously over-priced and over-complicated railway system, which the people of Britain have been left with as the result of privatisation in the ’90s.
Disappearing Lines In The UK: Part One (via TheGreatBritishRailwayMan)
Featuring footage from tracks around the UK which disappeared during the late 1970′s and 80′s.
Further footage can be seen in Part Two, Part Three, and Part Four.

British Rail Corporate Identity Manual (by Wallace Henning)
The British Rail symbol, created by Gerry Barney at Design Research Unit, has endured beyond its origins and has become a shorthand for Britain’s national rail network. Maintaining a strong and unified identity across a country’s railway, ferry and hovercraft network demanded a groundbreaking and extensive piece of graphic design. This book will celebrate British Rail’s identity in its entirety – not only its distinctive symbol.
Currently seeking funding on Kickstarter, this is a must for rail and design fans alike. Check out Walter Henning’s Flickr page for more transport related goodies.
Snow (via BFI National Archive)
Comprising train and track footage quickly shot just before a heavy winter's snowfall was melting, the multi-award-winning classic that emerged from the cutting-room compresses British Rail's dedication to blizzard-battling into a thrilling eight-minute montage cut to music. Tough-as-boots workers struggling to keep the line clear are counterpointed with passengers' buffet-car comforts.
