āYou may encounter many defeats, but you must not be defeated. In fact, it may be necessary to encounter the defeats, so you can know who you are, what you can rise from, how you can still come out of it.ā ~Maya Angelou

By the way when I turned my album in, my mom cooked! This was just a few nights ago and I thought, this āseat at the tableā thing has so many algorithms. It takes on so many different meanings and spaces. The reason why it was so important for the first time for anyone to hear an interview or to hear me talk about this record be in connection with my mother is because the album is also a tribute to both my mother and my father. I think that I feel extremely privileged that my parents went through all of the pain, trauma, and the weight of being two young Black people who came from not much at all and who were able to dream big and manifest it. When I think about this record, I think about my mother starting her hair salon in the garage of our home and the amount of countless hours that she spent on her feet to take it from there to a place with twenty-five employees and becoming one of the most popular, successful salons in Houston. I think about my father growing up extremely poor and in poverty and dreaming big enough to become who he is and taking a spare office in our house and turning it into a record label and a management company.

5 faces of girls education in Nigeria - Bilky Wada, 14 ā Missing out on school because of her period
Bilky Wada is in 6th grade and loves going to school. She is working on doing well in school so that she can follow in her sisterās footsteps and attend secondary school. She wants to become a nurse because she wants to help her people.
However, she says the majority of her classmates are far ahead of her. Why? Because she stays home when she has her period. The only toilet in her school is used exclusively by teachers and she, and her classmates, are forced to go to the bush.
āThe boys make fun of us when we go to the bush. Sometimes we run home and leave school because we are embarrassed.ā
