Simon considered for a long while. Rocky was reasonable, what he said made sense. That made Simon calm down a little. "I still don't like it when he talks to me that way, but I guess I'll learn to get over it," he said with a huff, leaning into Rocky as much as Rocky leaned into him.

Unfortunately, Simon's anger came back and it came back badly. He knew he was being completely irrational, and that was the worst part: he wanted to change but didn't know how. Trying to challenge the way he thought, pointing out the contractions made him uncontrollably angry, like he was being crushed, like he was dying, like he had to fight for his life.

It came on so fast he didn't even understand what was happening.

He slammed his hand against the wall hard enough to dent it. "Because that's the fucking deal I made! That's how all this works!" He yelled, scrambling to his feet. He clutched at his chest, struggling to breath. He was terrified. He was so fucking angry. Slammed the laptop into the floor, shattering it. Thank God there were about eight others, but it was a big deal. Finally just to make a point, he knocked a bunch of beakers off the table and they shattered. Then he doubled over, still gasping for air, and tugged at his hair.

Grace came running in. He saw the laptop, he saw Simon, he saw Rocky looking apprehensive and assumed the worst: that Simon was having another violent tantrum. He stood between Simon and Rocky and shouted, "Simon ENOUGH! This is NOT okay!"

Rocky scrambles away from Simon to give him space. He wasn’t worried about getting hurt just didn’t want to overwhelm Simon more. He watches Simon break things. He didn’t really care about the broken things. He could make more beakers and could try to fix the laptop. Rocky is more worried about Simon getting hurt.

He taps his claws on one limb trying to figure out what to do. Simon is freaking out. He wasn’t breathing properly and Rocky can hear that is heart rate is elevated. Then Grace came running in. “No, no, no. Simon no hurt Rocky. Simon upset.”

Rocky rushes over to Simon. He still isn’t really sure what to do. With Grace he’d give a hug, but he wasn’t sure with Simon. It could make him freak out more. He starts to hum a comforting Eridian song. “Simon safe. Rocky no leave. Grace here,” he says over his humming.

Grace looked like he wanted to protest, but there was very little he could do to stop Rocky once he set his mind to it.

Luckily, the singing seemed to work. Simon first dropped to his knees, then keeled over onto his side, curling around Rocky. His breathing was still pretty ragged, but it was slowing down. "Sorry, sorry, sorry," he said softly, curling up a little tighter.

Grace gaped at Rocky, totally stunned. "How did you do that?"

Rocky shushes Simon without stopping the tune. “Rocky not mad. Simon not in trouble.” He leans into Simon. Trying to help him calm down more.

“Eridian comforting song. Rocky parents used to sign to Rocky. Rocky thought might help Simon,” Rocky explains.

"I told you I don't want to be treated like a child," Simon groused, without much heart in it. It helped, it really did, he was mostly just embarrassed.

But... Very sheepishly, he admitted, "It helped. Thank you,"

Grace just look confused. "What's going on what happened? I was only gone for a few minutes. Simon, what made you so upset?"

“Not just for children!” Rocky defends. “Good song for all ages. Simon welcome. Rocky sing for Simon anytime.”

Rocky lowers himself more to the floor out of shame. He thinks he pushed Simon too much. He didn’t mean to make him freak out. “Was Rocky’s fault. Rocky sorry.”

He didn’t want Grace to be upset with him either. If both Grace and Simon are upset with him then he’d have to be all alone.

Of course Grace was going to be the first to come to his defense. He sat next to him, rested his hand on his carapace. "Hey, it's okay, buddy. I'm sure Simon forgives you," He looked at Simon expectantly.

Simon shrugged. It stung a little that Grace wasn't even willing to hear him out, but he was, ultimately, right: it wasn't Rocky's fault. "Yeah, of course I do. It wasn't your fault anyway, Rock. I just got upset. I don't know why. I know it doesn't make any sense, wanting something and not- but it isn't you. I'm just... A little fucked up,"

Rocky leans into the two humans. Feeling a little less guilty about causing Simon’s breakdown. He just wanted to understand him and help.

“…Rocky don’t know,” he said still a little unsure. He was the one who kept asking. “Simon want to talk about it, question?”

Simon's whole body tightened, and he curled in on himself like a dying spider, bringing his knees to his chest and resting his hands on his head, finger locked together.

It was only fair of them to know.

"I made a Deal with It," he whispered.

"It?" Grace asked, immediately skeptical, immediately curious.

"Yeah," Was all Simon said. "I get to live. But I don't get to be greedy. That's the deal," He said it like that explained everything, like it was obvious and Grace was fucking stupid for even asking. "If I take too much I'll lose it all,"

Rocky tilts his “head”, a human habit he’s picked up. “Who decides if greedy, question? Rocky no think Simon greedy. Many want what Simon want.”

Rocky is confused about the deal. Plenty of Eridians and humans want mates. Surely whoever this It was understands that wanting mates is a pretty universal.

Rocky presses against Simon more. Suddenly getting protective. This It wasn’t going to take away his Simon.

"It does. It decides. This is... This is more than I deserve, and I can't be greedy, I have to be grateful for what I have, and if I dont- I can't go back down there, I can't," Simon said.

Grace crouched down next to Simon and Rocky and put an arm around both of them. Simon was clearly having some kind of episode. He wasn't being rational and nothing he said made any sense, but Rocky was taking him literally.

"Hey, hey, okay it's okay. I think it's reasonable to be afraid of taking too much," Grace said. "Especially when you're scared that taking too much could result in rejection or loss,"

Simon leaned into Rocky, almost like he was trying to hide behind him. But he didn't fight back against what Grace said, which was good.

"Maybe what you think it expects of you isn't accurate. Maybe there's some wiggle room "

Grace mentioning wiggle room gave Rocky an idea. His brain starts to come up with loopholes. He counts them using one of his claws.

“If Rocky being greedy not Simon doesn’t count. If given and not taken not count. Rocky no let Simon leave.”

Simon genuinely seemed to consider this for a moment. "Maybe," he relented, which was a huge win, honestly. "I don't know. I'll have to think about it,"

He reached a trembling hand out for Rocky. "I don't want to leave," he said, his voice cracking. "Really, really, I don't. I like it here, I like you guys. But... If I break my deal, there's nothing I can do. It's a god. Or maybe It actually is God. I dont know. But it- it changed everything. Look at me," he said roughly. "If it can do this to me, to all those people, to- to those researchers.."

He shuddered.

As far as Grace was concerned, this was PTSD-related psychosis. Did Eridians have a concept for psychosis? He'd have to explain it to Rocky once Simon was asleep. Suddenly, the outburst, hell, all of his outbursts made a lot of sense—people suffering from delusions often became irrational angry when the delusion was challenged, even if they knew that they weren't being rational.

"Hey, it's okay. I can see why you're afraid, I think it would be very scary to feel like you're going to lose everything if you break the rules, but you don't know what the rules are. I think maybe "not being greedy" might mean that It just wants you to be a good person,"

Rocky leans into the reaching hand. He listens to Simon attentively. “Rocky thinks Simon will be okay. Simon not alone. Simon no will have to leave.”

Rocky wasn’t sure why Simon was so upset. He was determined to help. He seems to be helping some. So is Grace. He just wishes he knew what was happening and how to help better. Maybe Grace knew. He’d ask later when Simon wasn’t in the room.

“Agree, agree, agree. Simon not bad person. Simon very good. Simon listening to god.”

It took a long time for Simon to say anything, and when he finally did speak, all he said was, "Okay," and curl up against Rocky's ball. But he actually seemed to be considering it and a win was a win.

His head was starting to spin and he felt kinda sick. It was absurd, really, how just talking about things could make his body completely revolt. But he trusted Grace and he trusted Rocky and he really, really liked both of them, and didn't want to let them go.

Rocky makes a happy trill when Simon says okay. He thought cute, cute, cute when he curled up around Rocky. No silly god was gonna take his Simon away.

“Simon feeling better, question?” Rocky asks. He was more than happy to stay as a stuffed animal for Simon. He would be the damn best Eridian cuddle buddy ever. He is a little worried that the hard floor might hurt the fragile human’s back.

Hey rocky i just wanted to share that ive started taking Testosterone (the human hormone that basically tells the body its male) and am extremely happy. It is my first dose so there's no changes yet but trans joy is being felt :D
