Faster Horse?

Henry Ford, founder of the Ford Motor Company, made an outstanding observation:

If I Had Asked My Customers What They Wanted, They Would Have Said A Faster Horse

When he started Ford Motor Company, the mode of transportation for most people was a horse. Cars were new, expensive, and not reliable at the time. The norm of traveling by horse was efficient because that’s all the US population knew and that was all the population was exposed to. Horses worked. Why change?

Ford challenged the norm. He capitalized on the advancement of raw material and technology. He succeeded in making the production of cars more reliable and cheaper through the use of an assembly line.

This quote is so important and still relevant today because sometimes as small business owners, we think our ideas are so crazy. We doubt ourselves because we don’t think people will believe in it. Or, there might potentially be a solution to the problem (i.e a horse for transportation). If we listen to outside influences, we can be discouraged. If we listen to the average consumer, we might be deterred from forming a better solution. I just want to encourage you, me, US, to continue to innovate.

Let’s continue to think of better solutions. We may fail. It might actually be less efficient. But let’s try. Don’t let the customer or society always dictate our thinking.

I’d take a slow car before a “faster horse” any day of the week. Be encouraged.

SEO Hacks Part 3

Moving right along with our SEO Series (see Part 1 and Part 2), our third recommendation to help improve optimization is the method of effective HTML tags.

With the advancement of website user interfaces, a deep understanding of HTML is no longer a necessary skill. One can simply drag and drop items, highlight sections, move figures, and place images as if he or she was doing so in Microsoft Word. Although these actions are simple for the website “designer”, there are still HTML and CSS elements that are being enabled in the background that you don’t see (unless you have HTML, CSS, or Java knowledge).

The way a document is constructed on Microsoft Word or whatever word processor of your liking, is the same way you should think of your website. Your document should be broken down by section and each section should begin with a heading. Within each section, you may bold, italicize, underline or maybe even highlight a word for emphasis.

Because a search engine crawler reads your site the same way, you should construct your pages in that fashion. The heading, sometimes seen as <heading 1> or <h1>, is the main idea. The words that are in bold, highlighted, underlined, etc. signifies to the crawler that these are important words and should be paid more attention to. The same way a heading or a highlighted word on a document may catch your eyes, is the same way the crawler reads your page. As a result, you should use these elements to emphasize what is important and relevant to the content of your website.

The crawlers place importance on words and phrases in the following order (from most important to least important):

Heading 1

Heading 2

Heading 3

Bold

Italicized

Underlined

Highlighted

Regular or Normal Text

This doesn’t mean your entire website should be one entire Heading 1 element. The crawlers are smarter than that. It’s important to be very strategic with your tags and words/phrases of emphasis. When applying the different tags, think of your site or page as an outline for an essay and you will see your search rankings improve.

Don't Downplay Your Genius...Ever

Hey Readers! It has been a couple weeks since we’ve last posted. There were so many things going on during the past few days. So many doubts. So many distractions. So many “issues.” Laziness and discouragement overpowered persistence and drive.

Sometimes, we get TOO caught up in numbers, likes, views, plays, and sales that if the digits don’t add up, we start second guessing ourselves.

“Is it worth it?”

“Is anybody even paying attention?”

“They don’t even notice.”

“I’m not making a difference.”

But then, in all due timing, situations start correcting themselves. You start re-aligning yourself with your goals. You start encouraging yourself. You get encouragement from other sources. Things start looking up. And this is exactly what happened to me.

I was scrolling Instagram one night during my brief discouragement period and I saw this:

I couldn’t believe how something so innocent and small (not to mention grungy) could turn my whole mood. It was a sign. It was a moment of clarity. It was my turning point. I sat up in my chair, said a prayer, and took a major stride forward.

I just want to encourage ANYBODY who may be watching or reading. Don’t ever let anybody or anything force you to downplay your genius. Keep creating content. Keep pursuing your goals. You might not get there as quick as you would like or hope, but you’ll get there. You’re a genius. I’m a genius. We’re all geniuses. Let’s encourage each other and hold each other accountable. We owe to ourselves and to the world.
