Alec couldnāt believe that she was defending Sam ā the man whoād stabbed her and left her for dead. If there was one fatal flaw about Bonnie Bennett, it was her undying selflessness.Ā āFuck Sam. Fuck him. Iām gonna fuckinā kill him, Bonnie.ā He hugged his friend, wishing more than anything that heād arrived a few hours earlier. Maybe he couldāve saved her and protected her from Sam. Deep down, he knew that the past was irreversible, but that didnāt prevent him from wishing that he could go back in time and make everything alright.Ā
āI know, Bon. You saved her,ā he whispered to her, feeling her body start to shut down beneath his arms. His parents, then Caroline, then Lucas ā everyone was being ripped from him one by one. Looking down into her watery eyes, he heard her last request and knew that as painful as itād be for him, itād at least put Bonnie out of her misery.Ā āOkay.ā He took a deep breath and cleared his throat. "I-I love you,ā he said softly, speaking the words aloud for the first time in ten years. The last time heād told anyone he loved them he was just another ten-year-old boy wishing his parents luck before their flight. Now, looking at his childhood friend as death crept upon her, he felt his parents watching over him. Leaning down, he slowly pressed his lips to hers. It was a quick and gentle kiss that only lasted a few seconds, but it was his goodbye.
āWatch over us, alright?ā He asked as he pulled back from the kiss. Once he was certain that she was as comfortable as she could be with her head propped up his jacket, he took one last look into her eyes before his hands wrapped around her throat and took the air from her lungs. āGoodbye, Bonnie.ā He watched life flee from her pupils and waited until sheād stopped thrashing around to check her heartbeat and confirm that she was dead. Tears filled his eyes, and he knew that the look on her face was going to be embedded in his brain forever.
He picked up her lifeless body and laid her down on the floor with her hands over her chest. His thumb ran across her cold cheek, but very suddenly he felt a surge in his joints. He jolted upright and felt blood pumping through his veins. He felt like he was on fire ā had Bonnie placed another spell on him in her final moments of life? This thought was quickly discarded and he stumbled back until he was against the wall, his fists clenched tightly.Ā āWhat the fuck is happening to me?ā He growled, closing his eyes for several seconds. Maybe if he shut his eyes heād wake up and itād all be a dream. After taking several breaths, Alec opened his eyes to find himself in the same position he had been in before. Reality sunk in once again: this wasnāt a dream. It was real.
And his eyes were glowing gold and black.
Bonnie had known that this moment was coming for far longer than Alec had, and yet she still couldnāt find the right words to say to him to make all of this better. Her chest heaved as she cried; listening to him curse Samās name was painful, and she wasnāt sure why. Then again, Bonnie Bennett always had been the kind of girl that got attached easily. She took Alecās hand in both of hers, smiling gently up at him.Ā āItās okay, honey. Itās okay.ā She kept repeating it over and over again, almost as if saying it enough might make it true.Ā
He knew what she wanted from him without having to say the words, and for that she was honestly grateful. She was glad that she didnāt have to admit her weakness out loud. She didnāt think that sheād be able to live with the shame that came from taking the easy way out. What was this called when it happened in the books and the movies? A mercy kill. Thatās what it was. Thatās all that it was.Ā āTake care of her, okay?ā she requested, looking up at Alec with tears in her eyes.Ā āSheās gonna need someone to show her around again. And I...ā she trailed off for just a moment, taking a deep breath before continuing.Ā āI wonāt be here to do that.āĀ
She tried not to cry, not to make it obvious that she was suffering or scared, but the moment that he said that he loved her, she couldnāt hold it in. She knew how serious those words for him to say, and the fact that he could say them to her meant more than she knew how to say.Ā āI love you too,ā she choked out, biting her lip. Her tears only came faster when Alec pressed his lips to hers, and she kissed him back as hard as she could in her weakened state.Ā
As he pulled away, she nodded at his question.Ā āIāll watch over you always, baby,ā she swore. She took his hands again, squeezing them as tightly as she could.Ā āItās okay. Just do it. Please.ā She closed her eyes as his hands found her neck, and what happened after didnāt hurt. Bonnie Bennett wasnāt alone in her final moments.Ā
She was with someone that loved her.Ā
