i had to learn to save myself

She was a hurricane and a woman. She was the meaning of the word tempest. And she knew that what she touched broke and what she loved blew away in the fury of the wind and rain that she carried with her. A dark cloud, a spark in the dark.

Alec couldn’t believe that she was defending Sam – the man who’d stabbed her and left her for dead. If there was one fatal flaw about Bonnie Bennett, it was her undying selflessness. “Fuck Sam. Fuck him. I’m gonna fuckin’ kill him, Bonnie.” He hugged his friend, wishing more than anything that he’d arrived a few hours earlier. Maybe he could’ve saved her and protected her from Sam. Deep down, he knew that the past was irreversible, but that didn’t prevent him from wishing that he could go back in time and make everything alright. 

“I know, Bon. You saved her,” he whispered to her, feeling her body start to shut down beneath his arms. His parents, then Caroline, then Lucas – everyone was being ripped from him one by one. Looking down into her watery eyes, he heard her last request and knew that as painful as it’d be for him, it’d at least put Bonnie out of her misery. “Okay.“ He took a deep breath and cleared his throat. "I-I love you,” he said softly, speaking the words aloud for the first time in ten years. The last time he’d told anyone he loved them he was just another ten-year-old boy wishing his parents luck before their flight. Now, looking at his childhood friend as death crept upon her, he felt his parents watching over him. Leaning down, he slowly pressed his lips to hers. It was a quick and gentle kiss that only lasted a few seconds, but it was his goodbye.

“Watch over us, alright?” He asked as he pulled back from the kiss. Once he was certain that she was as comfortable as she could be with her head propped up his jacket, he took one last look into her eyes before his hands wrapped around her throat and took the air from her lungs. “Goodbye, Bonnie.” He watched life flee from her pupils and waited until she’d stopped thrashing around to check her heartbeat and confirm that she was dead. Tears filled his eyes, and he knew that the look on her face was going to be embedded in his brain forever.

He picked up her lifeless body and laid her down on the floor with her hands over her chest. His thumb ran across her cold cheek, but very suddenly he felt a surge in his joints. He jolted upright and felt blood pumping through his veins. He felt like he was on fire – had Bonnie placed another spell on him in her final moments of life? This thought was quickly discarded and he stumbled back until he was against the wall, his fists clenched tightly. “What the fuck is happening to me?” He growled, closing his eyes for several seconds. Maybe if he shut his eyes he’d wake up and it’d all be a dream. After taking several breaths, Alec opened his eyes to find himself in the same position he had been in before. Reality sunk in once again: this wasn’t a dream. It was real.

And his eyes were glowing gold and black.

Bonnie had known that this moment was coming for far longer than Alec had, and yet she still couldn’t find the right words to say to him to make all of this better. Her chest heaved as she cried; listening to him curse Sam’s name was painful, and she wasn’t sure why. Then again, Bonnie Bennett always had been the kind of girl that got attached easily. She took Alec’s hand in both of hers, smiling gently up at him. “It’s okay, honey. It’s okay.” She kept repeating it over and over again, almost as if saying it enough might make it true. 

He knew what she wanted from him without having to say the words, and for that she was honestly grateful. She was glad that she didn’t have to admit her weakness out loud. She didn’t think that she’d be able to live with the shame that came from taking the easy way out. What was this called when it happened in the books and the movies? A mercy kill. That’s what it was. That’s all that it was. “Take care of her, okay?” she requested, looking up at Alec with tears in her eyes. “She’s gonna need someone to show her around again. And I...” she trailed off for just a moment, taking a deep breath before continuing. “I won’t be here to do that.” 

She tried not to cry, not to make it obvious that she was suffering or scared, but the moment that he said that he loved her, she couldn’t hold it in. She knew how serious those words for him to say, and the fact that he could say them to her meant more than she knew how to say. “I love you too,” she choked out, biting her lip. Her tears only came faster when Alec pressed his lips to hers, and she kissed him back as hard as she could in her weakened state. 

As he pulled away, she nodded at his question. “I’ll watch over you always, baby,” she swore. She took his hands again, squeezing them as tightly as she could. “It’s okay. Just do it. Please.” She closed her eyes as his hands found her neck, and what happened after didn’t hurt. Bonnie Bennett wasn’t alone in her final moments. 

She was with someone that loved her.

Bonnie had forgotten that Alec was coming. For a moment in time, she felt a glimmer of hope, that maybe she didn’t have to die today, but the truth sank in just as quickly. She was too far gone for him to save. By the time that he got her to a hospital, she’d be dead. That’s not what she wanted. She wanted to die happy and warm in her friends arms. If she was going to go, that’s how she wanted it. “I-It was Sam.” Her breathing was shallow and quick, her eyebrows knit together in both pain and concern. “He stabbed me for taking my tracker out. But Alec, she’s alive. She’s going to wake up soon. I did it.”

Alec saw the surprise in his friend’s eyes, and just as soon as her surprise vanished so did his hope that she was going to be around to watch another sun set. Even after her promise that morning that she wasn’t going anywhere, he had to watch another friend die. “Sam? Your tracker?” He repeated, the reality of it finally sinking in. Bonnie was going to die by the council’s hands and to some degree, it was Alec’s fault. He’d been the one to take the track out of her arm. He’d also been the one to find her nearly lifeless body only a few days later. “Who? Caroline?” The idea of resurrection belonged strictly in fictional novels – not in his real world. “This was your plan? To die bringing Caroline back from the dead?” If she wasn’t dying in his arms at the moment, he’d be pissed as hell. She knew how dangerous it was, yet she was willing to sacrifice herself to make other people happy. “Bonnie, I let her go. We all did. You can’t die on me, too. You promised me. You said you weren’t goin’ anywhere –” he tightened his grip on her and began rocking back and forth, not knowing how else to help ease her pain. “Please don’t die, Bennett. Please.” But it was already too late. She’d be gone within seconds and he knew it.

Part of Bonnie really wished that she had never told Alec who was responsible for her current pain, because she could see the guilt in his eyes the moment that the realization hit him. "It's okay," she promised, smiling weakly at the younger boy, trying to ease his pain. "Sam isn't himself right now. H-he didn't mean to do this." And she truly believed that. She had seen a glimmer of the real Sam last night. She was only upset she hadn't been able to fix him before she was gone. That was okay, she realized. Caroline was always more up to that kind of task anyways. "She's back, Alec. She's alive. I saved her." The words came out in a whisper and her eyes closed; they were too heavy to keep open any longer. The witch listened as her friend pleaded with her to stay with him, to just hold on, but the pain was too much for her. She was starting to shake uncontrollably, and tears were falling slowly from her eyes. "It hurts, Alec. I don't want to hurt anymore." Her eyes were pleading as she spoke, staring up at him with this one last wish.

He’d never actually gone inside before, but he passed it on his way to training almost every day, so he was familiar with the route. It only took him ten minutes to arrive, and by the time he hopped out of his truck he could sense that something very bad had happened. He still had no idea what Bonnie was doing, but clearly it was something she was proud of, so by the time he entered the house the last thing he expected to see was Bonnie bleeding out on the ground. “Bonnie?” He yelled, his voice thick his fear. “Bonnie, who did this to you? Who did this to you?” He rushed to her side and got on his knees, pulling her bloody body onto his lap. “What the fuck happened?”

Bonnie Bennett had never been the kind of person that could just allow someone else to suffer. In one word, she could be described as selfless, even to a fault. She would give up anything for her friends and family, for the people that she loved. The witch had shown that selfless side again and again ever since Damon and Stefan Salvatore had arrived in Mystic Falls. At one point, Bonnie had been determined to stop being the savior, convinced that she needed to save herself. That had all changed back in March. 

The news that Caroline Forbes had died had been the most devastating phone call of Bonnie’s life. Hearing Lucas sobbing on the other end had been enough to let her know that something was seriously wrong, but she had never guessed that it would be her best friend that had been killed. Ever since that phone call, Bonnie had always known that she was going to do her very best to bring her back. 

She had started thinking about her plan more recently as soon as Sadie had asked to go to the other side to see her sister. Bonnie knew how close the two of them were, and she knew that losing her sister had been devastating for the older Forbes sister. After Sadie got trapped, the witch had had to put her other plans on hold and channel all of her energy on getting her out, but when her attempts failed, she was only more motivated to bring her friend back to the world of the living. 

The thing that had been the most motivating, however, had been being told what she couldn’t do. After Amy had watched her attempts to bring Sadie back fail time and time again, and the older witch told Bonnie exactly how pathetic she was, Bonnie used that anger to fuel herself into finding answers. And it had finally worked. Today was the day that Caroline Forbes was going to come back to life, and nothing could stop her. 

She had started early that day, making her way over to the old witch house before the sun was even up. She wanted to make sure that everything was perfect before dusk. It was called the witching hour for a reason, and she knew that the rising moon would also bring a rise in her power, and she didn’t want to miss her window. The site of a hundred dead witches was sure to help her as well, but she wasn’t going to risk anything. This was too important. 

Candles were burning all around the room as she started the spell. Her eyes were closed, and her hands were on the grimoires that Caroline had left her in the blonde’s will. Latin spilled effortlessly from her lips, and she didn’t realize that her chanting sounded more like screaming as she put every ounce of power that she possessed into the spell. The only time that she stopped was when she heard footsteps behind her. She had been moments from finishing, moment from bringing life back into her best friend’s lungs. 

The last thing that she had been expecting was for a knife to be plunged into her skin by a man that she had slept with not even twelve hours beforehand. Her body was already so weak from the amount of power that she had exerted today, and she couldn’t find the strength to heal herself, but she wasn’t done working. She wasn’t going to give up, not when she was so close. She crawled over to the table that she had been working at, grabbed a grimoire off the table and started again. 

It took everything that she had inside of her to keep going, and the words came out in a mix of whimpers and shrieks, but it worked. The flames around her reached terrifying heights as she finally finished the spell, and she knew that it had worked. Caroline Forbes would be waking up in just moments. 

The saddest thing was that by then, Bonnie Bennett would probably be dead.

You broke the rules, Bonnie. [Taking his foot off of her throat, Sam squatted down. He didn’t hesitate for a moment, stabbing her low in her abdomen.]

[She didn’t have a moment to respond, not to protest or scream or even try to shield her body before his knife pierced her skin. Pain ripped through her abdomen and her already weakened body had no chance to fight back. The pain was so overwhelming she didn’t even realize that she’d begun screaming.]

[Bonnie lets out a strangled cry as Sam tosses her like a ragdoll onto the hard floor of the old house. His foot on her neck caused her to gasp for air, her eyes wide as she tried to pull in a deep breath and continuously failed.] Sam, please. Please, stop!
