Foxy Brown, 1999
The iconic 1924 photograph captured by James Van Der Zee depicts Marcus Garvey alongside George O. Marke and Prince Kojo Tovalou-Houénou during the fourth annual Universal Negro Improvement Association (UNIA) convention in New York.
The fear is comfort. It’s always been comfort.
I have to keep going.
It’s so hard to keep going when I’m comfortable.
First comes comfort,
then the complacency,
the lack of challenges and newness,
the boredom,
the dissatisfaction,
then the depression.
I cannot get comfortable.
I have to keep going.
I thirst for conquests.
I run from convention.
I itch for insight.
I revel in those revelations.
To what end?
If it ever does.
I just want to be financially stable and having really good sex.
