Hurricanes are moving more slowly over both land and water, and that’s bad news for communities in their path.

In the past 70 years, tropical cyclones around the world have slowed down 10 percent, and in some regions of the world, the change has been even more significant, according to a study published Wednesday in the journal Nature.

That means storms are spending more time hanging out, battering buildings with wind and dropping more rain.

“The slowdown over land is what’s really going to effect people,” says James Kossin, the author of the study and a tropical cyclone specialist at the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. He points to Hurricane Harvey’s effect on Houston as an example of what slower storms can mean for cities.

Rockets Owner Tilman Fertitta Gives Santa Fe HS Students Seats To Game 5 Of Western Finals

Houston Rockets Owner Tilman Fertitta invited the senior class of Santa Fe High School to Game 5 of the Rockets vs. Warriors Western Finals in wake of the recent shooting that occurred a week ago. In an interview with KPRC Local 2 News, Fertitta said “I have roots in Galveston County. Everybody knows that. I played on that football field before in Santa Fe. We just wanted to step up and I talked to Tad (Brown) and said, ‘Hey, we need to find 300 tickets for the Santa Fe High School seniors on Thursday.’”

The Rockets in Toyota Center will also pay tribute to the lives lost and those wounded in the tragedy and honor the 300 seniors who will be in attendance tonight.

Tragedies of any kind help a city rally around something every local citizen can agree with. Sports may be trivial in solving the politics behind the issues that cause these disasters, but it does have the ability to shine a light in the darkness for many of those involved. In 2013, the Boston Marathon Bombings inspired the Boston Red Sox to push forth and win the World Series the same year. Last year the Houston Astros won the World Series in wake of Hurricane Harvey. It comes as no surprise that athletes find themselves playing for what reads on the front of their jersey rather than what is on the back. It becomes a personal endeavor to give a city a reason to cheer no matter how grave life gets for them. The Houston Rockets are looking for that magic, pushing for a championship and give everyone in Santa Fe and all of Houston a reason to smile through this trying time.

The Rockets play the Warriors at Houston in a 2-2 tied series tonight at 8 PM CT on TNT.
