You run a VITAL blog and you're an extraordinary person for showcasing these characters. You're doing a wonderful job and I wish you all the best in the future!
Thank you!
As far as characters of colour in SF novels, Ursula K. Le Guin's writing is probably a good place to look. She has written articles on whitewashing and racism in the SF publishing industry, and many of her better known works have black or brown protagonists.
Thanks! I was actually planning on reading her whole Earthsea series when I was done with my current book series, and I was going to discuss her characters and that awful Sci-Fi channel Earthsea movie that came out a few years ago and kind of ignored the whole 'non-white protagonists' thing and replaced them with a lot of white people.
Literature is a little more difficult to include on this blog, as it's not like you can tell from the cover or pictures if the characters in a book are brown or not, so unless I've read a book and know which characters are brown, or I do some research (as a lot of plain reviews or summaries of books don't include the character's ethnicity unless it's part of the plot), I need suggestions from my followers to find brown characters from literature. And I'm still not sure how I'll visually represent them on the blog, as most books don't have official art and fan art can be very hit or miss, so I think I'll put off books for awhile and concentrate on visual mediums for now.
For colored characters in anime, Moonbay of Zoids: Chaotic Century/Guardian Force would count as another addition!
Oh, thank you! I don't think I've even heard of Zoids before. Moonbay isn't a lead character, but I'll do an entry for him when I get back to doing individual anime and other franchises. I've got some notes to keep track of brown characters in anime that I know of and that people suggest to me, but I think I need to make it more organized, because I missed some on the Leading Brown Characters in Anime post. Again, thank you the suggestion.
In your last post you forgot to include Marik Ishtar from Yu-Gi-Oh! C: Also Kotetsu T. Kaburagi and Nathan Seymour from Tiger&Bunny.
Marik and Nathan are definitely brown, but they're not considered lead characters. However, I'm having a hard time with Kotetsu, as I'm not very familiar with Tiger & Bunny - he's obviously supposed to be Japanese, and he's slightly darker than the white characters. Oh well, I could still add him to the post. I was checking my notes and I realized I missed at least two characters, so adding a few more can't hurt anything. Thanks for the suggestion.
Why isn't Yoruichi from Bleach on that list?
She's a major supporting character, but not a main one in either the anime or manga. The post about leading characters isn't definitive coverage of every single brown character in anime, and a lot of series that have a lot of brown characters in the cast weren't included just because none of the brown characters were considered leads. Obviously there can be argument over who's a main character or not, and I had some in the post that weren't credited as being a lead character everywhere. If anyone does find a character I either missed or one that you really think doesn't count as a lead, be sure to let me know.
I think you missed the main character of Platinumhugen Ordian (2000), also I've never seen Brain Powerd but three of the six characters toted around in the OP might be brown, I don't know if they're leading.
Hm, I think you're right about Platinumhugen Ordian. I can't find much info on the lead character, Yuu Kananase, but he is consistently dark-skinned (i.e. he's probably not meant to just be tanned or something like that.) There are brown characters in Brain Powered, but apparently the only two characters considered the leads aren't. Obviously I couldn't research every anime television show or movie ever released, so I definitely welcome suggestions for characters I could've missed. Thanks for pointing this out to me.
Leading Brown Characters In Anime
And now the complete post of Leading Brown Characters in Anime. Warning: a lot of images under the cut.
About that post about Pheobe, what about Brock and Bruno from Gen 1? Don't they count?
Brock and Bruno look pretty different in the anime than in the games. They're both paler in the games, while in the anime they're darkened, enough so that I would include then in this blog (even if they're still supposed to be Japanese, it's not like they're aren't Japanese people who are naturally dark-skinned). They're not the only Pokemon characters to have their appearance changed like that. Rosie and Sashay of Pokemon Battle Revolution had their skin tone changed to darker when the games were released in America. Because of the difference in appearance, I would include the anime versions of Brock and Bruno, but not their video game versions. Phoebe is still the first brown character in the games, but not in the franchise as a whole.
When you get onto Western Animation, Western Sci-Fi and Western Fantasy, I do have a brown leading character that you could feature. Her name is actually in the title. Sally Bollywood is an Indian amateur detective who solves mysteries with her partner, Doowee. She's not well-known in America but she's becoming very popular in Europe. Thanks for doing this blog, by the way. It brings me back memories!
Oh, cool, thank you! I'm very grateful for any help finding info on animated works outside of America and Japan, as frankly it's not like very many are shown here. I'm actually having trouble finding info on them. The western animation post will come out after the anime one, and I'll try to get it out quicker.
Thank you for existing!
Aw, thank you! I'm sorry about the lack of updates lately, but I just started school, and I was figuring out how to to write informative posts in a better manner. Soon I'll post a list of all brown leading characters in anime, and then move on to western animation, western sci-fi, and western fantasy. Then I'll start doing to the single posts about characters from specific franchises again. It's nice to meet new followers, and I'll have a new update written in just a few hours.
