Absolutely deelish. From the stellar 1997 vintage that Italian producers are still talking about. I'm often completely intimidated by the sheer number of Italian grape varieties, but you can't go wrong with a Chianti Classico (majority Sangiovese, blended with Canaiolo and Malvasia) and this one was beautifully smooth and fragrant.
I recently moved back to Hong Kong after about 10 years in London. I moved back in with my parents, which I thought was going to be hard. Quite the opposite: we have a nice garden and pool, something you're not going to find often in HK. I also get to open bottle from my dad's collection. Among them were these interesting bottles, from top estates. Absolutely incredible. The Tour Blanche did not disappoint at all - I love the honey marmalade fragrance you get in well-made Sauternes.

it is from Colgin estate in California. I'm not actually sure what that bottle size is called. It's just massive; it took two of the guys to carry it to the lift.
There were five of them in the cellar having their photo taken and they looked quite intimidating!
We had a Spanish Wines masterclass at work
I didn't really get to concentrate on the class as I was working, but I did get to taste all the wines... Except the Vega Sicilia (far left), which was a shame because I was really looking forward to it.
I have no idea why the Pingus is so expensive. Apart from having a cool name, it was rubbish.
The Viña Tondonia was very herbal and even a bit smelly. It reminded me of the farms next to my school in Yorkshire. The L'Ermita was lovely and a lot lighter than I expected.
Favourites were Quinta Sardonia and the Roda - but I'm not sure I remember why... again, my attention was on other things.
The other highlight of the masterclass was that it was led by a pompous, prat from Canada, who, because had been in London for so long (and I think he is originally Serbian?), had the most hilarious accent - it was a mix of Canadian, East End London, and something else, which sometimes even sounded a bit Australian. It was quite distracting.

Château Lascombes vertical tasting
Lacombes is Second Growth producer in Margaux. We had a vertical tasting at work, where we were taken in reverse chronological order from the 2010 vintage to 1998. The session was led by the head of press affairs at the château who had flown in for the day.
I think the general consensus was that 2009 and 2010 were still a bit too young to drink, while 2006 and 2007 were at that perfect ripe stage for drinking now. They had really full flavours both on the nose and palate, with gentle tannins that complemented well. The vanilla from the oak was perfect.
I was struck to taste how completely different 1998 tasted - almost completely unrelated, much more woody. Lascombes went through a period of ownership and management change in 2000 and the vintages from that year onwards all taste similar to each other. I think they also changed the blend. You could also see how the label has evolved, with the most recent vintages sporting the slick, sophisticated and showy labels expected from a château owned by a hedge fund.
So pleased I got to go to this - a case of one of these vintages would cost around a decade's wages...

This course came before the perfectly rare Wagyu beef, which was eaten before a picture could be taken.

This is the Cordillera del Paine in Patagonia.
I love Gewürztraminer .
It is a grape variety grown a lot in regions on either side of the French-German border. It is usually brilliantly golden and has a really fruity, blossomy flavour, often with flavours of mango or lychee. I love its sweetness and juicy fruitiness... I know some don't like it, as its sweetness can come with a bit of muskness, like Riesling. Gewurz means 'spice' as in vanilla or cinnamon - which these wines have a lot of.

Decanters
We know sometimes wine needs a bit of breathing, as lack of oxygen can cause it to take on weird aromas. Sometimes even full-bodied whites can do with a bit of oxygenating. A friend of mine recently suggested blending it to help aerate it quickly.
Decanter design has developed into 'wine-art', serving to bring wine and art one step closer to each other. This decanter completely weirds me out though, as does this one.
