Magnus had it all planned out. He was going to take Alec to the Hunter’s Moon where they had gone for their first date, and then he’d portal them to Tokyo, where he would propose on the balcony they had made out on. Of course, there was more detail to it then that, but it was the rough draft and he didn’t want to give away too much of it.
He was busy in the bathroom putting his makeup on, wanting to look perfect for the love of his life tonight. His hair had pink streaks in it like it had when they first kiss, his makeup reminiscent of that event as well. Chairman Meow sat on the corner of the counter, meowing every so often when Magnus would say something to him. When he was done, the warlock reached out to pet the cat with his ring-laden fingers, eliciting a purr. Checking himself out in the mirror one last time, he turns dramatically and leaves, heading out to the living room where his Shadowhunter waited with an adorably confused look on his face.
“Are you going to tell me what’s going on yet?” Alec asked. He had been given an outfit and told to wear it, but no other details were offered.
“Soon, my angel,” Magnus answers sweetly, giving him a soft kiss on the cheek. He felt the box containing the ring sitting heavy in his pocket, and he couldn’t wait to give it to him. He had gotten it specially made, which had taken awhile due to the fact that he would have the maker restart every time he found so much as a tiny imperfection. Eventually it had been made exactly as he wanted, and his heart swelled with the idea that Alec would soon be wearing it. His own Prince, soon to be his King. They might not live in a castle, but he certainly treated his Alexander like royalty. How could Magnus not? He was everything the warlock had ever wanted in a relationship.
He takes the Shadowhunter’s hand and they leave, walking through the streets of Brooklyn. It had been insisted upon on Magnus’ part that they didn’t portal to the secret location - the first one, at least. Tokyo would be a different story. They made idle chatter, but mostly it was silence as they took in the night air. Alec had given up on trying to find out where they were going, though he slowly put it together the closer they got to the Hunter’s Moon. He looks to his boyfriend, a smile on his face.
“Feeling nostalgic tonight?” He asks once they get there.
“Something like that,” Magnus teases, fiddling with one of his ear cuffs as he was wan to do when he was nervous. Alec took note and reached up, intertwining their fingers. “You don’t have anything to be nervous about,” he assures the (much) older man despite not knowing the reason why he was nervous.
Oh, I hope so, my dear Alexander, Magnus thinks. He wouldn’t be able to bear it if his proposal was rejected, and he tried not to let the negative thoughts flood in and convince him to back out of this. He hadn’t planned the event for months to chicken out now, and the Shadowhunter was the person he wanted to spend the rest of his life with - well, the rest of Alec’s life, though he knew he would remember him even after his death.
They go in and head up to the bar, where Maia is working. She smiles knowingly at Magnus and slides him two drinks. He had been anxious for this to all pan out and had told the werewolf what he intended to do, so she had agreed to help it run smoothly. There would be no bar fights or bad behavior in general from the occupants tonight, she assured him.
Once the drinks were consumed, they go over to the pool table, where Alec destroys Magnus twice in a row. His smile is so bright and proud that the warlock doesn’t have the heart to tell him that he had let his beautiful boyfriend win both games. As skilled as his love was, the warlock had his magic and could easily manipulate the odds in his favor without anyone realising what had happened. The night goes smoothly as promised by Maia, and laughter is abundant as they make their way outside. He guides them into an alleyway, where Alec gives him his adorably confused look again until a portal is made and they step into Tokyo.
“Are you recreating our dates?” He questions, realization sparking in his eyes.
Magnus just pretends to lock his lips and throw away the key, not willing to ruin the rest of his plan even if Alec had figured it out. He guides them through the streets, pointing out things he hadn’t the last time they were there. As they wind through, making their stops and buying souveniers, the eldest Lightwood child stops when he sees a little girl chasing a ribbon. He can see a Warlock’s Mark on her - a tail flowing out behind her, long and slim. The mundanes walking about don’t seem to notice it, but neither of them are surprised. It makes Magnus smile to see Alexander so interested in the child, but then suddenly, the Shadowhunter takes off running.
It takes him a few very confused seconds to realize that the little girl was running straight for the street, oblivious to the car speeding toward her. He reaches out with his magic, screaming Alec’s name, but by the time the blue stream reaches him to grab them both, the car makes a sickening thump sound and the girl’s wailing fills the air. He sprints over and falls to his knees, looking over Alec wildly. His gorgeous man was barely breathing, the ribbon tucked into his hand. The driver gets out but Magnus just looks up, flashing his demonic eyes before the man is flying into a vendor’s cart.
“Alexander, please,” he begs, voice wobbly with tears as he tries to heal the damage. There was too much, but he had to try because oh angel please, he can’t lose him, not here, not tonight. Not when they were supposed to have a long life together.
“I love you,” Alec wheezes out, smiling sadly as he shakily takes the ribbon and puts it in the warlock’s hand.
At this point, there were tears rolling down Magnus’ face as he cried unabashedly. When he finally realizes he wouldn’t be able to save him, despair sets in and he scrambles for the box in his pocket.
Alec’s eyes fill with shock when he sees it, knowing what was inside without having to ask. “Ma'nus?” He manages.
“Alexander Gideon Lightwood, I-” he pauses to take a deep breath. “I have never loved someone ask much as I love you. For so long I’ve been shut off, unwilling to lose someone else I care for, but you came in and smashed my walls down without even trying. I love your smile, your eyes, how you care for everyone else and don’t ask for everything in return - just… everything. I love every bit of you, including the bad. We were supposed to spend the rest of our life together, my angel.” He was choking up, so he knew he had to wrap this up even though he still had so much left to say.
“I love you, Alexander Gideon Lightwood, so will you please marry me?” He’s on the verge of a complete breakdown as he opens the box to reveal a silver band with Aku Cinta Kamu inscribed on the inside of it and Shadowhunter runes carved on the outside, the Marriage rune front and center.
“Yes,” the dying Lightwood breathes out, and the ring is shakily put on his finger. “I… I love you…” He exhales one last time and then his grip goes limp, head rolling slightly to the side.
Magnus had never screamed so loud in his life.
It was 9:37 pm on September 12th when Alexander Gideon Lightwood got engaged, and 9:38 pm when Magnus Bane lost the love of his life.
