A Miscellany of Fashion and Facts

Welcome to my collection of history and fashion related things! Feel free to reblog and remove my commentary, I won't be offended :). I figured this would be a good place to arrange the information I've collected about the costumes that I admire along with a little bit of their historical background sometimes. I do not sew (yet), but if and when I can, these would be my dream sewing projects. Overall, this tumblr will serve as a place to visually store my ideas on the topics of fashion, costume, history, and sewing.

Painting: The Execution of Lady Jane Grey by Paul Delaroche 1833

I love how weighty the satin or fabric of her skirt looks. And the guy’s fur lined coat looks so luxurious.

I’m pretty obsessed with handwriting and love medieval script (jane’s sig not medieval). I’m watching the docu series about her hosted by Helen Castor and they showed her handwriting, it’s very nice! If I could make a 1500s dress, I’d want a period accurate writing utensil and diary to match :). Tudor history is fascinating. Lady Jane Grey was queen for 9 days at about 15 years old and was beheaded not long after. She was very well educated for a girl during that time. She knew Latin, Greek, Hebrew, Italian, and was devout in her Protestant faith. And apparently, she is one of the few English monarchs to not have a confirmed portrait.

In-progress: my first ever crocheted scarf. It’s supposed to be about 6-7ft long! I’m gonna see how three skeins look and then decide how much longer I want it to be. And besides, I’m nowhere near 6ft so this thing is gonna end up looking like a blanket on me lol. Loving this deep red though. I hope I can finish it by Christmas! 

 For anyone who’s just getting into crochet, like me, try this pattern! It’s pretty damn easy, and looks neat :D.

Medieval art is so bizarre

Hellenistic Period ca. 330–300 B.C.E. (Greek). Gold and rock crystal.

The rock-crystal hoops of the bracelets (ca. 330-300 B.C.) have been carefully cut, carved, and polished to produce a twisted appearance, highlighted by wire bindings fitted into the valleys. The rams' heads emerge from long elaborate collars decorated with three friezes enclosed within bands of darts and bordered by plain beaded wire. The upper frieze, an ivy chain on a vine, is tied at the center with a Herakles knot and bears four bunches of grapes; the middle frieze has palmettes with pointed leaves; the third frieze, a palmette complex.

I wonder how heavy these bracelets are? I imagine them feeling cold and weighty against my arms. So opulent.

Not sure if all of these are brooches; some may be hat pins. Love them anyway. So, as I was looking into hat pins I came across brooches, which then led me to the Greeks and how they used big brooches to hold up their robes. Actually, I already knew that the Greeks used brooches thanks to Oedipus Rex. Anyway, now I’m curious about Ancient Fashion!

Labeled as an Edwardian 14k gold (which you can see in the photo) amethyst hat pin.

Looks more like a golden scepter!

Random find: labeled as an Edwardian era hat pin. Gold with some sort of stone.

It almost looks as if the stone is one manufactured out of glass and the glue and tarnish underneath has become visible. Regardless, I’m really fond of this one.
