Confused
Dear XXXXXXX,
I’ve been having a rough time of it lately. Of us. I have an even worse time trying to tell you about it. It’s natural to be defensive, it’s natural to feel that you’ve had no part in the muck going on in my head - but...
Who knows, maybe I’m not being fair. Maybe I’m the problem and I’m simply blaming it on you. There’s no amount of distance from the situation that give us true logical 20/20. There’s always going to be bias.
I know you care about me, love me even. But I struggle with other parts of it. I don’t think the love is really enough. There’s the distance to consider. Distance I’ve very patiently put up with for 6 years, with no real indication that it’s going to get better. There’s also the fact that you don’t really seem to want me. You say you do - but you know that saying; actions speak louder than words.
I feel like I’m nothing more than a good friend, a good friend you say “I love you” to every day. And in exchange, I don’t really know what I get... I don’t feel desirable, or desired... Hell, I haven’t even gotten so much as a birthday or Christmas present from you in 2 years. I don’t usually bring that one up in conversation because I know it would come out wrong. It’s not about the materialism, really... it’s about the connection there. I don’t really feel like we have one. Not anymore, anyway.
And then you applied for a new job, a good job, an ‘I-wouldn’t-close-the-distance-if-I-got-that-job’ job. Granted, you didn’t think you’d get it, but what if you did? How much more waiting would you expect from me? How many more nights would I turn down invitations to see friends in order to listen to you talk about video games, or dogs, or military history - and never hear you talk about us?
I’m confused because something woke up inside me, and it suddenly started yelling at me that I’m not living - I’m just surviving. And now here I stand with only the barest inkling that there might be MORE out there, and wondering if giving up a 10+ year relationship is worth it.
If you don’t want me, can you please just let me go? Let me have my nights back, and let me find casual encounters to fill the void until someone DOES want me. Let someone who would choose me tell me I’m pretty again. I’m not getting any younger, but I am getting more tired, more lonely, and more empty.
I know you feel like it should be - but it’s not okay to tell me you’ll want me later. It’s not okay to tell me I’m the asshole for being hurt by something hurtful you said - even if you tell me you didn’t mean it that way. Our relationship is not okay.
I’m not okay.
And this isn’t about wanting someone else. Though the wakeup call came from long brown hair and a really rich laugh. No, I haven’t made a move on him in earnest (you do know I like to flirt). In part, because I respect you even still. In part because I respect him. I realize I don’t want him to feel like a side fling, and I certainly don’t want to hurt you.
No, this is about us. This is about the problems in our relationship. Problems that stretch back before the start of this year - long before I met him.
So I just feel lonely. Unwanted by you. He’s oblivious.
And I can’t even find the words to say this to you.
Maybe I never will.
Until then, I know we’ll talk tomorrow. Just not about this.
Sincerely, The Coyote
