There’s fanfiction…. And then there’s FANFICTION. The kind of shit you happen upon at like 3am or some other ungodly time because you were trying to find a fix for ur fixation at the time and you are just SUCKED IN and every sentence feels like a line of cocaine and it has quotes and imagery that permeate your brain and it’s the shit that sticks around in your consciousness forever and it never goes away and it’s always going to be one of Those Fics.

This is what @aparticularbandit and her RP blog of Jessica Rabbit has done to me. (Except I didn't discover it at 3am, I discovered it at a normal time.)

Seriously, Timeline Canon is an amazing story. You've got the first half, which covers Jessica's origin story as a toon with a less-than-family-friendly Purpose, and how she meets Roger and leaves the people who hurt her and marries her honey bunny. So far, so positive.

But then you're hit with the second half. Goodness gravy, the second half.

See, Jessica always wanted to be human, because humans have more rights and more freedom than toons. And one day, she gets what she'd wanted, when a genie turns her into a human. But the genie also turns Roger into a rabbit - a real, fluffy, mindless white rabbit. And Jessica will do whatever it takes to get her husband back.

Bandit has a truly captivating writing style. It's atmospheric. It's full of inventive imagery. It sucks you into Jessica's unique way of seeing the world. And the world itself takes Who Framed Roger Rabbit and expands it, delving into the darker implications of toons being discriminated against, while keeping the wonder and fun of imagining cartoons in the real world.

Reading Timeline Canon was an experience unlike anything I've ever read before. It made me smile, and sometimes chuckle. It made me sit back and ponder deep philosophical questions about life, death, love, happiness, and second chances. And it made my eyes water on more than one occasion, especially towards the end. It moved me more than many published novels have managed to do.

(I should pause the effusive praise to note that Timeline Canon wasn't just Bandit's fanfiction - a lot of other roleplayers contributed to making it what it is. I particularly enjoyed the writing style of Willow, a.k.a. @ican-giveyoustars, who played Roger.)

Basically, if you like Who Framed Roger Rabbit, Jessica Rabbit, and having your heart ripped out your chest and torn to pieces (metaphorically speaking), then you'll probably like Timeline Canon!

Cat runs fingers over a few of the candid pictures that had wound up on her desk a couple of weeks, before, nails skimming along the dipping black and white of an unmistakable image. 

Cartoons. Aliens. Murders–scandals–drugs–politics.

People say that the world is coming to tumultuous times. The world has always been in tumultuous times. It’s business.

It’s a clandestine room–set apart from the rest of the government offices around them. Safe, certainly, but the hum drum of people outside causes a calming, assuring din–a statement of not being alone as much as people meeting for this sort of thing can be–and an ex-reporter (once a reporter, always a reporter) hums as she slides them across the small metal table to the woman sitting across from her. 

“I appreciate you meeting me here, Mrs. Rabbit.” The professionalism–the respect–is something Cat reserves for rare occasions and sees to it, here, a genuine appreciation marking her ever-even tone. Long fingers pop open a purse, next, the sound of the briefcase that had held the photos snapping shut still hanging in the air with a metallic click as she slides a recorder out, between them, red highlighting the beige, boring walls of their small shared space. They’ll change history, here. Cat will see to it. “I’ll admit, at first I was skeptical, but after seeing the aftermath with my own two eyes, it’s difficult to ignore and like Wynonna  little klepto phase, it won’t be. I’m sure you understand just as well as I do the delicate nature of our meeting and your security is my highest priority, so I suppose my first question for you is simple:

“No.” Jessica’s dark eyes do not flick up to the woman sitting across from her - she knows reporters and their mannerisms, and they’re all the same, even if they pretend to have a change of heart and switch to something else entirely - it’s always about the scoop.  The informant is of no concern. Besides - she hadn’t come here under the belief that she would be safe.  The government has never treated her or other Toons well; it certainly won’t now that they have been infiltrating human life.  Hadn’t the law been that Toons too close to human must be Dipped?  What were they now? Her hands cross about her chest, thumb tapping against middle finger, that itch for a cigarette just to have something to hold onto, the presence of the smoke an easy distraction - something to watch instead of letting her gaze wander about the room or focus on a window just behind the other woman (looks like she’s paying attention, which she is; looks like she’s looking at her, which she isn’t). But Roger hadn’t wanted her to smoke.  So she...doesn’t smoke. She crosses one long leg over the other and leans back in her chair, eyes still focused elsewhere. “Safe isn’t an option here.”

like, give me characters who have been in a long term relationship for years, give me characters who have been married, happily married, and who thought that was it for them, that it would never happen again and they would have to live the rest of their lives alone

give me characters who have lost the love of their life…and then let them find another one

by all means make it awkward; make them reluctant and unsure, have it take a long time, make it a slow and strange and dawning realisation but let it be real

give me characters who fall in love a second time, and have it be as real and passionate and important as anything else in their lives has been, give me characters who thought they would never be able to move on realising that you don’t have to deny your past to embrace your future, give me characters who fall in love again in spite of themselves, discovering that they’re not too old and not too broken to find happiness again

give me characters who fall in love a second time; desperately, blissfully, head-over-heels and stupid in love
