A Life That’s Good: A Rayna and Deacon Story
Chapter One
"I don't know how she did it, it's truly a miracle. Her organs and vitals are looking great. Rayna isn't ready to leave just yet." Deacon pulled the girls closer to him, "She's okay girls, she's a fighter." The doctor looked over Rayna's chart, "Let's let her rest, Deacon let's talk about what comes next." Maddie rushed Daphne to hang out with Scarlett while Deacon discussed the plan. "Your wife suffered a severe injury to her pelvic bone and to her hip, she'll need some physical therapy, it's going to take some time but she's going to be fine. She's strong." Deacon nodded in approval, looking at his wife through the glass window. 6 Months Later "Rayna it's your last appointment, you need to go." Deacon practically pleaded with his wife. "Deacon I don't feel like I need it anymore plus the girls need me here today." She said firmly, "Rayna Alisia Jaymes, get your ass in the car now." Deacon hardly ever used her middle name but right now he was losing his patience. "Fine, don't ever use my middle name again John." She smiled walking past him, Deacon smiled happy to see her getting back to her old self. "Oh Juliette is meeting us there, she wants to see how you are doing? Maddie and Daphne are with Scarlett and Gunnar." The last 6 months have been hard on the girls, hearing Rayna cry out in frustration and in anger as she worked through this. Hearing the sharp words shared between Deacon and her, Tandy came down for the first few weeks to help put. The car ride to the hospital was silent just like it has been for the last 6 months. "Want me to come in with you?" Deacon asked, reaching for her hand, "Yeah it's the last one. You should hear this." They walked in together, Juliette waiting for them at the entrance. "Rayna, last appointment, how do you feel?" Rayna shrugged, eager to get this over with. The appointment lasted about an hour. "Alright Ms. Jaymes, you've come a long way, you are clear to do something. Any questions." Rayna looked at Deacon who shook his head but Rayna had to know. "What about my career? Can I return to the stage?" Juliette let out a laugh, "Yes Rayna you can return but no touring yet that might be a little much for now." Rayna was just happy that she could sing again, she missed it. Missed singing with her girls and Deacon. The doctor left Deacom, Rayna, and Juliette. "Well Rayna it's so good to see you up and moving. Once you start touring again, we should co-headline again?" Juliette was eager to show Rayna all she's done in the last 6 months. "I might just take you up on that offer. Thanks Juliette." On the way home Rayna thought about the moments before the accident, the feeling when Wayne showed up, the feeling of never seeing her girls again. "Rayna, stop thinking about it." Deacon didn't need to look at Rayna to know she was crying, "I can't, his voice, the accident, all of it. How close were we to losing it all?" Tears poured from her eyes as she thought about what would've happened if she died. "Rayna don't think like that, you made it because we needed you. I'm not ready to let you go yet. Please don't think like that anymore." Rayna nodded still thinking about it, she couldn't stop thinking about it. When they pulled into the driveway, Daphne came rushing out the front door. "You've got to get Maddie, she just went crazy throwing things in her room." Deacon and Rayna rushed to Maddie's room, they could hear glass shattering. "Maddie?" Deacon knocked, "Go away." Rayna didn't bother knocking. "I'll talk to her, you handle Daph." Maddie plopped down on the bed that was covered in crumbles of paper. "Are you going to tell me what this is about? Or do I need to read all of these papers?" Rayna looked around the room. "It's been 6 months and I can't write a damn song." Maddie yelled, Rayna held up her hand. "Don't cuss or use that tone with me. I know you've been struggling..." Maddie jumped up, cutting her off, "No you don't, music hasn't left you." Rayna laughed. "Music hasn't left me? I can't go on tour any time soon. I can't find inspiration in anything. I'm recovering from a car accident. I'm pretty sure music has left me for good, Maddie. When you're calm, we'll talk about this." She left the room shutting the door behind her, for the first time she felt like music was truly gone. Deacon came around the corner. "Rayna? Baby? Are you okay?" All Rayna could do was shake her head, "I have to go." Rayna grabbed her keys and rushed out the door. She drove to the one place where someone felt the way she felt. Standing at the door she felt sick to her stomach. Raising her hand to knock before the door swung open, "Rayna, are you here to see Juliette?" Avery asked balancing Cadence on his hip, "Yeah, I am thank you." Rayna sat in the living room before Juliette came out. "Rayna what are you doing here? Not that it's not good to see you I'm just surprised." Rayna felt the tears forming in her eyes, "How did you do it?" She asked, wiping the tears from her eyes. "Do what?" Juliette sat down next to her wrapping her arms around Rayna. "When you had your accident you quit making music. How did you do it? I have nothing left in me, nothing to say. Music's left me." "Rayna music hasn't left you, you're just having a hard time. You'll work through it, you're the toughest person I know." Rayna almost smiled, "I don't think that I want to work it out. Music isn't important to me anymore. I don't see the point in it." Juliette seemed shocked by her words, "You can't give up on music, it's who you are." "I haven't given up on music, it's given up on me, and I don't want it back."
