Davos appreciated that Yelena was willing to ask him questions about what she found. He was unsure what would be recorded about him or what it would mean to someone of their society. He’d had his fair share of cultural misunderstandings with everyone of seemingly every economical level of their society and he had only begun to understand the structural differences between his people and those that now surrounded him.
“I endeavor to be and honest man, yes,” Davos agreed. “I am a straightforward person. I mean what I say and I say what I mean. If I make a promise, I will do all I can to keep it. If I make an oath, I would sooner die than break it,” he told her simply. When driven by grief and the the pain of betrayal, he had strayed but no more. He would no longer let such things change or control him.
When Yelena offered her flowers to him, Davos hesitated. “I mean no disrespect when I tell you that I am hesitant with offerings I do not feel bound to accept. Your flowers are beautiful and in truth I have been gifted several which I keep and care for where I stay. My worry is that I do not know how many of them, or if any of them, are giving from their own free will or if it is the power in me that causes such thoughts and actions. Since I can see no reason I would be noticed, much less offered anything by them before this began, I can only assume it is because they have no choice. I do not want to take from you in the same manner,” he explained, unsure how she would feel at his gentle rejection.
“There is a time for strict teaching and even what feels like cruelty to those learning, but this is not one of those times,” Davos assured Yelena. She could not be expected to find her calm center if she was being barked at by a novice instructor. “Though I am pleased you approve so far,” he offered.
It had been a long while since he had meditated with another and even longer since he had taught them the basics. If he’d ever considered a path besides that of the Iron Fist, it would be as a teacher. He enjoyed sharing knowledge and watching people become better for themselves and others. “It is,” he assured her, his tone calm and low, not wanting to break the quiet more than required. “We shall continue then. If your thoughts or feelings find something that demands your attention, I will not judge you for your reaction,” he promised her before falling quiet again.
Yelena raised an eyebrow as Davos said he’d rather die than break an oath. How.. intense. She wasn’t going to admit it out loud but she couldn’t exactly relate his motto. At the end of the day, she was going to do what was best for her well-being. Unless she had a personal and deep connection to her partner, she wasn’t going to hesitate to leave someone behind if they were slowing her down. She’s made a hundred promises and oaths in the past. She’s probably only kept about a dozen.
Still, she could appreciate an honest man. Maybe she didn’t even have to search up him up on the internet, maybe she could simply just ask him about his life. If he was declaring himself as a truthteller then surely he would have to be truthful about everything. It was still an odd concept for Yelena. She’s made a living out of being a liar. She couldn’t imagine having frank and direct in every single conversation. It would surely be exhausting.
Yelena tried her best not to feel disappointed when Davos rejected her offering. He brought up valid points, though, and it even caused her to take a step back and reevaluate. Was she offering the flowers because she wanted for him to add some color to his apartment, or because she was under the influence of his powers? She didn’t feel as though she was trying to gain anything. Perhaps, it was her subconscious? She wasn’t entirely sure but she also knew she couldn’t force Davos into accepting her offering. “That’s understandable, no disrespect at all.” She assured him. “Just.. the offer is there whenever you feel like adding some color to your place. You just have to say the words.” Her lips curled up into a grin to reassure him further that she wasn’t upset or hurt. She understood his hesitance in accepting a gift from a stranger. A stranger who might be under the influence of his powers. She wasn’t sure if she was or not. She didn’t really want to think about it either.
While she didn’t think Davos would start as though they were in boot camp, it was still a bit relieving to know he was going to be patient and calm with her. She wasn’t quite sure what to expect but at least he wouldn’t get upset with her if she by chance couldn’t following his lectures. Though, she didn’t think she was going to have too hard of a time.
Yelena continued the breathing exercise, following his instructions and trying her best not to get distracted. She felt peaceful which she was sure was the point so it must mean his teachings are working so far. She just.. needed to keep her mind from wandering. It was difficult, though. She could remember having to go through a similar lesson in the Red Room. Everything always went back to the goddamn Red Room. A place made of nightmares. For a second, the face of her former handler flashed in her head, the man holding a gun up to her face, causing her to gasp and lose focus. “Shit.” She muttered to herself, shaking her head. “I-- I don’t know what that was, um.. gimme a second, I can focus again..”
