Being broken

While my owner cannot take me out in society shackled and chained, a plaster cast offers at least a sort of publicly acceptable restraint. On one foot and crutches there is no running for me, no rushing around, no haste or urgency.

Life slows down to a pace that suits me.

Anna had been sulking all morning. One wrong step on her skateboard, and now she was sitting in the back seat of a car with a thick pink cast wrapped around her leg. Her friends had immediately covered it with funny messages and little drawings, turning it into something like a strange autograph book.

“At least it looks cool!” her best friend laughed when she saw it.

At first, Anna just rolled her eyes, but as the sunlight poured through the car window, she finally smiled too. The cast felt heavy, her toes peeked out from the end, and every movement reminded her of the accident… yet there was something oddly cheerful about it.

She snapped a quick selfie to send to her friends.

“Summer 2026: definitely not how I planned this 😅” she wrote underneath it.

A few seconds later, the reactions started pouring in. And Anna realized that maybe this summer wouldn’t be so bad after all.
