CHOOSING DENTISTRY AS MY FUTURE PROFESSION

Are you having trouble deciding which direction to take? Is there a cloud of confusion and stress hanging over your head? It's perfectly normal. Trust me,  I've been there. It's stressful to hear all of your relatives say, "You should be like these or that." It's difficult to make a decision because there are so many options and suggestions. Their opinions are valuable, but what matters most here is YOU, your interests, passions, talents, and even values.

IT'S ENTIRELY ABOUT YOU. It's all about bringing your visions to life. I had a hard time deciding what I wanted to do with my life. But one thing I've learned is to listen to your heart. Own it, no matter how difficult or long it took you to get there. It is not a competition to see who comes in first or who is the best. It's a fight against yourself. You can either catch it or let it drag you down.

After much thought, I decided to pursue my dream, letting go of all the baggage's I'd accumulated over the years. I'm now in my third year and will be in my fourth next school year. This is just the beginning of my journey, and I hope that when the time comes, I will be able to finally say that my hard work paid off.

PREVENT TOOTH DECAY SO TEETH WON'T GO AWAY

Visit your dentist regularly

-Seek professional help from dentist regularly for oral prophylaxis and oral exams. By doing so, early signs of cavity is detected thus prevent as soon as possible.

Limit sugar intake

-Decrease consumption of cariogenic sugars particularly sucrose. Foods and drinks containing high content of sugar let oral bacteria thrive which leads to tooth decay.

Brush your teeth regularly

-Brushing teeth decreases the probability of acquiring tooth decay and gum disease as it eliminates food and plaque on the teeth. The recommended times of brushing teeth is at least twice a day for 2 minutes each.

Use fluoride

-Toothpaste containing fluoride aids the enamel of the tooth to be harder and stronger.

Floss Daily

-Eliminate food debris and bacteria trapped in between teeth that aren't removed by brushing alone. It prevents build-up plaques hence lowering the chances of developing tooth decay and gum disease.

OPERATIVE THERAPY IN DENTISTRY

Amalgam filling

-Silver dental fillings composed of tin, copper, silver, and mercury. A strong, long-lasting, and least expensive option. It requires depth, the natural depth of amalgam is 1.5 mm.

Composite resin filling

-Composed of plastic compound and resin. The color can be adjusted to match teeth color. It does not require depth of tooth damage

Glass Ionomer

-It is composed of acrylic and fluoroaluminosilicate, a component of glass. Usually used as cement for inlay fillings, and for fillings when the decay extends into the root area.

Pit and Fissure sealant

-Provides a protective barrier by covering all the little grooves and dips in the occlusal surface of posterior teeth that prevents food and microorganisms’ accumulation.

Preventive resin restoration

-Aids in preventing the need for a larger filling. Minimal caries restoration combined with concomitant sealing of the adjacent caries susceptible pits & fissures.

Atraumatic restorative technique

-Decay removal with the use of hand instruments and fluoride-releasing adhesive materials (glass ionomer) for filling.

NON-OPERATIVE THERAPY IN DENTISTRY

Flossing

-An interdental cleaning tool which aids in removing plaque and food particles trapped in between teeth that aren’t eliminated by brushing alone.

Tooth Brushing

-Removes food and plaques on tooth surface thus reduces the probability of developing tooth decay and gum disease. The suggested time of brushing teeth is at least twice a day for 2 minutes each with soft bristle and rounded tips toothbrush.

Tongue Scraping

-Helps remove extra particle from surface of tongue. It does not only improve the appearance of tongue and improve sensation of taste but also removes bacteria that causes bad breath and tooth decay thus reducing bad breath.

Mouthwash

-Rinse out oral bacteria that lives between teeth and tongue. It is recommended to use 3-5 teaspoon of mouthwash twice a day for 30 seconds after brushing and flossing.

Dietary Consumption

-Nutrition is the most important factor in preventing oral diseases. Instead of consuming foods and drinks with high content of sugars, eat foods that are rich in fiber to keep the teeth and gums healthy.
