Hex-Breaking Salts!
Today’s project is creating a hex-breaking salt scrub for a friend who’s having some difficulties. When I made myself some a couple of months ago I bought a commercial salt scrub as a base and then added things to it but y'all I have been to three stores and can’t find that one or one like it, so I just made it from scratch this time…
Ingredients:
Salt - more than one kind
Base oil - something mostly liquid at room temp that melts into skin well, like sweet almond or fractionated coconut
Essential oils - I used cedarwood, frankincense, bergamot, and orange
Directions:
1. Pick your salts and mix them thoroughly. I usually do regular Mediterranean sea salt (small coarse) as the base, and this time I added four more (Hawaiian black, Hawaiian red, Celtic grey, Persian Blue) for a total of five. Use a number that’s important to your path, or that corresponds to your intent. I usually do three or five, and other salts are pretty easy to find if you have a local health food store.
2. Put a smaller amount of your base oil than you think you’ll need into a small dish. I have about a cup of salt maybe and I needed like 3-4 tablespoons of oil (idk, I don’t measure things precisely). So I started with like two tablespoons of oil.
3. Into that small amount of carrier oil, add a few drops of essential oil. JUST A FEW! I listed four up there and you can use those or use your personal correspondences, but essential oils need to be very diluted before you apply them to your skin, and both orange and bergamot cause photosensitivity (I don’t normally put those in anything I put on my skin, but this is designed to be used in the shower and washed off completely). So 1-3 drops each, and no more than 12 drops in 4 tablespoons of carrier oil (that’s a 1% dilution). And mix thoroughly.
3. Add the oil blend to your salts and mix it in. It should sort of stick together but not be too wet. If it’s still very dry, add a little more carrier oil. People who are fancier than I could make a sort of body wash base to make it actually liquidy, like the commerical base I bought the first time. (And actually if you buy a commercial base, just add your extra types of salt and essential oils directly in and then mix forever.)
4. Enchant it with your intent in your usual manner!
To Use:
In shower or bath, take some in your palm and think of the bad luck or energetic entanglement or whatever you’re trying to get rid of, and then feel it loosen and slough off as you scrub your skin with the salt. Rinse thoroughly, and then wash with your regular soap or body wash. The more surface area you can scrub with the salts the better but you may find that whatever you’re trying to break feels like it’s clinging to one specific part of your body. If so, focus there.
Enjoy!
Localizing Magic: Sweetgum Seed Pods (aka “Witches’ Burrs”)
See the rest of the Localizing Magic series.
If you live near a sweetgum tree, no doubt you’ve seen these spiky little balls by its trunk. They’re all over my backyard–I could practically swim in them. While most people consider them a nuisance, they nevertheless have both magical and medicinal properties.
Sweetgum seed pods, also known as witches’ burrs, are frequently used in hoodoo/conjure magic, which makes sense, since they’re uniquely American. In hoodoo, witches’ burrs are primarily used for protection. Hung over a doorway they can protect a home from witches. They’re also used to repel enemies or to incite someone to repay a debt. Now, I will be the first to admit I am almost completely ignorant of how hoodoo works, and I am respectful of its history as a means for African Americans to establish personal power in the face of systemic racism. I’m presenting these correspondences merely as inspiration for an eclectic magical practice, not as a how-to of hoodoo.
Contemporary American witches may use these pods to ward evil from the home. Used as an altar offering, they can increase the efficacy of spells.
The magical association with protection seems to have a basis in science. Green or unripe seed pods are high in a substance called shikimic acid, which is used as an antiviral both in herbal medicine and in commercial drugs like Tamiflu. The brown seed pods also have a bit of shikimic acid, but nowhere near as much as the green ones do.
If you’re interested in working with witches’ burrs, you can buy them on Etsy. Alternatively, if you live in the South, just ask if any of your friends has a surplus of them in their yard.

Last night into early this morning was a Super Black New Moon in Virgo, and while others can tell you more about that, I took the time last night to go see Na Morrigna, the three Daughters of Ernmas, to ask what message they had for me and my allies and associates this Dark Moon. I met them around a huge cauldron, into which they threw herbs and other ingredients. I breathed the steam, watched…

Witch Tip ☠️
If you are using flying ointments, do not apply them to the mucous membranes - the lips, nose, ears, genitals, anus. No matter what the legends of old say about witches shoving you-know-what up you-know-where, don’t believe it. If you put a flying ointment on a mucous membrane it will be absorbed in such a way that you will not be able to wash it off easily. This is especially true if you’re messing with the Solanaceae family. They can be tricky. The Artemesias tend to be more forgiving, but when you start throwing any of the nightshades in the mix, dosage becomes very, very important.
If you find that your ointments are too strong, that you have used too much, or that stuff’s getting a little too real, you can wipe them off using lukewarm water. Do NOT use hot water. Flying ointments are hallucinogenic and you may not be able to process external stimuli properly. That hot water may be hotter than you realize.
If you have really messed something up, please do not hesitate to call Poison Control. In the US, their number is 1 (800) 222-1222. They are open 24/7, 365 and their employees are friendly and helpful. They can tell you what to do if you overdose on pretty much anything, including both prescription and illicit drugs. They can even call an ambulance for you if need be. They are an invaluable and underutilized resource. Be safe.
This has been a public service announcement.

I had some difficulties setting up the new oil lamp – the first attempted wick did not work as planned, but once I finally got it right and settled in, I felt their presence wash over me, their vessel. “Welcome back, child,” they greeted me, in reference to the renewal of my contract, completed as per my usual in a sacred bath.
Their message for us all on this, the first Bright Moon of the New…

Faery Witch Upgrade:
That, friends, is a Hawthorn walking stick. I am SO HYPE!!!
Apparently it's treat yo'self month here in Tuiliel-land.
I've been on the lookout for one of these for months and then last week this was finally in stock on one of the sites I've been watching. American hawthorn, shoulder height.
Time to get to know it!
What exactly does it help with, something like warding off evil spirits? New witch here, just collecting info.
Hawthorn is an important tree in the Irish Fairy Faith (and so, also in Irish Paganism), that just so happens to also grow in the US.
It's one of the Ogham trees, associated with the letter Huath, which can be translated as "terror". (That letter is also associated with: a pack of wolves or hounds, blanching of the face in fear, night ravens, and trisyllabic poetry. Ogham lists are not just trees!)
It blooms around Beltaine, and eventually produces small edible berries. In the Southern US, there's a variety called mayhaw that is very prized for making jam.
In Ireland, it's often used for hedgerows, and a small blooming branch might be brought into the house on Beltaine (depending on local custom). Hawthorn trees that stand alone on top of any type of hill are usually considered fairy trees and are usually avoided because it's unlucky to disturb them. Other lone hawthorn trees often become rag trees, where people tie bits of string or cloth to ask for healing, that the illness gets better as the rag disintegrates (obviously if you're going to do that, loop it very lightly so as not to hurt the tree, and use natural fibers).
There is a lot more folklore out there, too, so I encourage you to do more research if you find this interesting, but these are sort of the basics.
What I'm doing, if the staff agrees to assist (and preliminary workings seem to indicate it will), is using the sort of ambivalent nature of hawthorn, it's associations with and also ability to protect from the Fair Folk, to support my dealings with Them.
My friend Seo Helrune has recently been blogging about ancestor cultus and I recommend checking out the series of posts they have out so fa
THIS THIS THIS
Hex for Oathbreakers
1. Make a poppet in your usual way, and name it for the oathbreaker you intend to hex. (If you don’t have a “usual way”, I suggest folding an origami person and writing the name on it.)
2. Recite the following to the poppet:
“I am one of many criers for justice in our society and we are always watching. There will be a witness every time you break your oath: every time you fail to uphold justice, every time you align yourself with oppressors, every time you lie. You will feel the force of our gaze as oppressive heat, weight, and pressure. You will shudder under this burden and you will suffer for it until you lose the strength and stamina to go on. Your pollution will be dispelled, your works will be undone, and your name will be forgotten.”
3. Stick the poppet in some type of container filled with mirrors and eyes. (I recommend small craft mirrors and googly eyes or drawings of eyes on the inside of a box or a jar.)
4. Light a candle and stick it on top of the container, as the “battery” for the casting.
5. Repeat with more poppets and/or candles as needed. I like to do a whole batch at once, and then a tealight weekly or so. I also sometimes shake my jar angrily when some new bullshit happens so that I have an outlet for that energy, and it can help recharge the spell.
This is the edited and redacted version of my spell, tweaked mostly to make it non-theistic since mine relies on help and guidance from some of my deities. Feel free to do your own tweaking, and share wherever you like, with credits intact.

All the cherry and blood orange in vampiric scents is the olfactory equivalent of replacing blood with tomato juice for spellcasting.

Some May-June Fairy Advice
we’re hitting that time of year when the memes are starting to show up that say things like ‘Celebrate this holy day by going out into the woods/under a tree/to a known fairy location and meditating quietly to ask them for their sparkly glittery blessing’ Listen, I’m not going to tell anyone what to do. You do whatever ill advised meme-suggested thing that takes your fancy. I am going to point out that going to any place that belongs to the Daoine Maithe - holy day or not - and resting there looking for them to give you things runs a risk (if anything happens at all beyond them ignoring you) of madness, serious illness, physical trauma, or death. Blessings if you are very lucky, although even their blessings have a sharp edge. Hence the phrase 'dead, mad, or a poet’ - note the dead and mad come first in the list of possible results. Even True Thomas was taken out of the human world for 7 years and he was blessed (kind of depending on how you consider truth speaking). This is the sort of thing that at the least should be done with a firm knowledge of proper etiquette, safety, and an understanding of the potential risks. And maybe some iron underwear and a big offering of dairy products. Would I personally go out and be asking for favours of strange fairies? No. But you do you. Just go in with your eyes open and an awareness of what you are doing that goes beyond 'a social media meme suggested this’
