As soon as Mason darted out of the fort like a bat out of hell, Kayden smiled and shook his head. “What the f-, TRAITOR!” Unlike his former partner in crime, he fully intended to stand his ground and stay in the fort. “We were supposed to be in this together. That’s the last time I get you your very own pet otter!” At the mention of apple juice, Kayden signed and pulled apart the bedsheets to crawl out.

Sure, he could’ve just gotten his own damn apple juice. But what would be the point, he’d clearly already lost the battle. “Fine, fine. But just so we’re clear I’m eating at the table because I WANT to not because you told me to.”

Dani walked to the fridge to get herself some water and the boys their apple juice before sitting down at the table with them. She handed them both their drinks and began to eat. She looked at Mason and watched him okay with the macaroni noodles and laugh. Then she turned to Kayden and noticed him looking at Mason as well. She smiled to herself at the sight of Kayden’s warm grin.

Kayden’s looks weren’t what made Dani want him but it was definitely a plus. From his hair, to his dimples, he could make her heart skip a beat with a smirk. She decided that today would be the day she would attempt to give him a compliment, “Kayden, you look really good today. I’m surprised you didn’t pick up any hot moms at the zoo.”

Kayden went back to the living room with little to no arguing on his part. It was better he walked away now before the conversation turned into something that he wasn’t entirely sure he was ready to talk about. That was the best thing about Dani, she knew him, and didn’t push him to talk too much.

When Dani called them in for dinner, Mason erupted into a fit of uncontrollable while a grinning Kayden tried to shush him. “Keep it down, will ya? If we don’t move we’ll get to have dinner in the fort.” He smiled down at Mase, astonished by the way that the little one had somehow weaseled himself a permanent place in Kayden’s heart, not unlike his mother. “Your ma might be in charge of us in the house but you’re the King in here, so like, she has to give you ice cream after dinner, you know?” Mason nods his head enthusiastically.

Daniella made plates for everyone and sat at the table, waiting for them to join her. As time went by, she heard Mason’s giggles. She got closer to the fort to listen to their conversation and smirked, “What if I promise to give you ice cream with chocolate fudge after dinner if you come out and eat dinner at the table?” In a few short seconds, Mason flew from the fort to the dining room table. She laughed and turned to Kayden, “I’ll be sure to give you some extra apple juice if you join us, Ky.”

For the first time in his life, he didn’t know what to say. There was always the obvious choice, scream about how he never signed up to be anyone’s parent, lie, say a bunch of shit he doesn’t really mean and walk away. Maybe even for good this time. Or he could try growing up a little.

“You love me?” It shouldn’t have come out as a question, because he kind of always knew, but the realization just suddenly … dawned on him, that that’s what this was; everything they’ve been through together, how they always found their way back, how they always seemed to be there for one another when it mattered. It was love. And he’d never really had that with anyone, not even with Jay.

“Look, I’m trying not to be a fuck-up, honest. I just like seeing Mase happy. And I’m still learning how to do that without breaking the law, alright? And I’ll get there, maybe, I don’t fucking know. But it’s not going to happen overnight. I love you, and I love Mason. And I’d never do anything if it meant not seeing either of you again.”

She bit her lip, “You mean a lot to him... and me. We’re a cute, weird, completely unorthodox family.” She walked over and gave him a sweet kiss, “You may go back to the fort. I got dinner.” She walked back into the kitchen and continued their dinner.

About thirty minutes later, she called out, “Boys! Time to eat!”

“The kid wanted a pet otter for a couple hours, what the fuck was I suppose to do? Tell him no? Christ Dani, no one even fucking noticed. And so what if they had? They gonna arrest the kid with super powers?” Kayden shook his head and turned around to walk away.

This was nothing new for them. When things between them were good, it was like living in a fairy tale; but when they got really good? That’s usually when Kayden figures out a way to rock the boat. “You know what?” Kayden turns back around to walk towards Dani. “You knew who I was when we started doing whatever the fuck this is. It’s not my fault you thought you could change me, alright?”

“You should’ve been a responsible parent! Buy him a stuffed otter or something. He’s growing up, Ky. He’s looking at the both of us for some type of guidance and we can’t mess him up. I shouldn’t be the one to change you. You should change because we have a family here. We love each other. He loves you. I love you. I don’t want to see you make the mistakes you did years ago.”

“What? How’d I get roped into making din-din?” Kayden glared playfully at Mason, “You tricked me, and I’m gonna get you back for this. That’s the last time I let you have ice cream for breakfast.”

Reluctantly, of course, Kayden follows Dani out of their little makeshift kingdom, feigning disgust but smiling to himself when she kisses him. “Of course not! What kind of babysitter do you take me for? He definitely had a cookie at some point, I think.” He’s joking, obviously … maybe. “Don’t poison me, I fed the kid real food, I promise. I even took him to the zoo, without stealing any animals I might add. Restraint was hard though, especially when he asked if we could take an otter home.” He’s silent for a moment, and it almost feels like he might implode if he doesn’t tell her. “Okay, so I might have brought the otter home but we took it back like an hour later, no one even noticed.”

“You do know that you could’ve gotten arrested? WIth my son?” She sighed and began to prepare their dinner in silence. Just as she started seeing Kayden become a responsible adult and father figure, he would do something so reckless and idiotic. She began to question every thought she had about actually telling him how she felt.

She put a pot on the stove and turned back to him, “You can go back to the fort now. Maybe if you try hard enough, you can get another charge on your record without going outdoors.”

It was kind of a shock to everyone; Kayden sticking around, moving in with Dani, taking care of a little one and being a father figure. No one expected him to be a decent role model, what with his habit of abusing his power to steal shit. At least he sure as hell didn’t. That’s not to say that he isn’t still a shit-head with impulse control issues and an ability to act like he doesn’t have feelings. But Dani and Mason made him want to do better, be better, for them.

Sometimes, when they’re all a little tired at the end of the day, and the three of them are on the couch, watching cartoons, with Mase curling up on his side; he can’t help but think that he could do this for the rest of his life. They could be his family. God only knows he never really got on with his real one.

Hearing the jingling of Dani’s keys at their door, Kayden poked his head out of the opening of their fort. “Nah, ‘course it is.” He nodded his head towards the kitchen. “Nutella’s in the cupboard and there’s apple juice in the fridge.” Feeling a tugging at his pant leg Kayden disappears into the fort before popping his head out again. “King Mase demands your presence, your grace.” He goes back in, beckoned by some more tugging and quiet whispers, popping his head back out seconds later, “And mac and cheese for dinner.”

Her two favorite men being complete children couldn’t help but make Daniella smile. She made her way over to the fort and crawled in. She locked eyes with Mason and smiled at him before kissing his cheek, “Hi, baby. I’m gonna go make your dinner with Ky, alright?” She grabbed his hand and pulled him out of the fort with her.

Once they stood up, Dani gave Kayden and quick kiss, “That is beyond adorable. And I really hope you didn’t feed my son nutella and apple juice all day.”

Daniella walked out of her last class for the day and began the journey back to her apartment. Being a senior, she grew tired of on campus housing and decided to move. She didn’t have to go alone, though. Kayden decided to move with her in order to ‘help out with Mase’ and stick around this time. In the past four years, Ky and Dani’s relationship had always been a complicated one. No matter how far the other had ran, they would always end up finding each other.

As Dani drove home, she began to get wrapped into her thoughts. Kayden cared for her son as if he was his father and never made Mason feel as if he wasn’t special to him. Daniella knew that she loved Ky but would never have the nerve to actually talk things out with him to become official. She turned into the parking lot of her apartment complex and parked in her usual spot next to Kayden’s bike. Once she left the car and began walking down the hall, she could her Mason and Kayden’s playful screams. She laughed as she unlocked the door.

She opened it to see a couch fort and bed sheets in the middle of the living room. She sighed, “I can already assume that you guys haven’t started dinner.”
