"Mountains and rivers and the great Earth Are already nothing but dust, While man, to be sure, is but dust within dust. Bodies composed of muscle and blood Will surely return to bubble and shadow While human affairs, to be sure, are but shadows within shades. If the highest wisdom is not obtained, There will be no heart of understanding.
Hung Ying-ming It seems new shit has come to light...
To reside in a remote village on the side of a deep gorge hidden amid dense vegetation in a poor hut with a thatched roof on which grass sprouts up, whose door is overgrown by vines and which has small round windows like the mouth of a jar and a mulberry staff for a hinge, a hut whose roof is leaky and whose floor is damp, whose sleeping quarters are drafty and blanketed by snow and frost so that the grass mats are soaked; to wander in a vast marsh and ramble on the side of mountain slopes: these are the things that would make the average people develop dark moods and make them anxious and sad and unable to concentrate on anything. Sages live in places like this, content (Zi Le) on their own. What are the reasons for this?... ...Because they intrinsically have the means to penetrate to the Mechanism (organisation) of Heaven, and they do not allow honour or debasement, poverty, or wealth to make them weary and lose their awareness of their Potency (Zi De). Thus, the cawing of the crow, the squawking of the magpie: has cold or heat, dryness or dampness ever altered their sounds? Therefore, when the realisation of Dao is secure, it does not depend on the comings and goings of the myriad things. It is not because of a momentary alteration or transformation that I have secured the means to realise myself. What I am calling “realisation” means realsing the innate tendencies of nature and destiny and resting securely in the calmness that it produces.

“Formerly, I, Zhuang Zhou, dreamt that I was a butterfly, a butterfly flying about, feeling that it was enjoying itself. I did not know that it was Zhou. Suddenly I awoke, and was myself again, the veritable Zhou. I did not know whether it had formerly been Zhou dreaming that he was a butterfly, or it was now a butterfly dreaming that it was Zhou. But between Zhou and a butterfly there must be a difference. This is a case of what is called the Transformation of Things.” (via Ctext)
What is reality? Are you you? Am I I? What is self? Is self and truth merely the realisation of a dream we travel in? Transformation means no stagnation, constant change and motion. Like the seasons, like our bodies, and like our minds. Yes, there is a difference between Zhou and the Butterfly at the same time as there is NO difference between them. Ask yourself this as you wander down your path...what are you? What are you in relation to self, to the cosmos, to happiness, to pain. When one finds the what that find the why.
~ The Daoist Dude
By not seeing that the movement of mind, the sense of “I” and other, is insubstantial and shares in the nature of voidness, one grasps at it as something real and thereby creates the illusion of separateness and the duality of subject and object. In this way, with the three basic mental defilements of ignorance, desire, and hatred, the mind ensnares itself. And with our constant grasping and longings we fall into a state of dissatisfaction.

If a drowning man drinks it, he dies. If a thirsty man drinks it, he lives.
上善若水。水善利萬物而不爭,處衆人之所惡,故幾於道。居善地,心善淵,與善仁,言善信,正善治,事善能,動善時。夫唯不爭,故無尤。
"The highest good is like water. Water is adept at benefitting all things but does not contend; It is located in places loathed by the numerous. Therefore it is close to the Dao. In dwelling, emphasise the earth; in your heart, emphasise becoming like a deep pool; In giving, emphasise benevolence; in speaking emphasise trust; In governing, emphasis rulership; in affairs, emphasise being capable; in acting, emphasise timeliness. And since there is no contention, there is no blame." LZ8
At the young age of 12 The Daoist Dude first came across this passage. "Like Water", adapting, moulding, abiding to whatever form presented itself. Flexibility, versatility. This is never easy, we can talk of becoming "close to the Dao" yet rarely do we practice it. Often the excuse is that life gets in the way - what foolishness is this! Life should never be the excuse, it should be the result. Being content, seeking truth of self through ones actions: in speech, in writings, in practice. Being free from "blame" is not about avoiding it, but we Daoists simply do not contend with others and are comfortable with the lower ground, where the water dwells.

The mind may accept or deny that you are awareness, but either way it can’t really understand. It cannot comprehend. Thought cannot comprehend what is beyond thought.

To abide...like the movement of a flame one must go where the wind blows. One must accord with what is naturally so, live in the moment, never fight it, just be. Let it ride and abide. - The Daoist Dude.
