Saiga Antelope
The saiga antelope is one of the world’s most unusual and ancient-looking mammals, native to the vast grasslands of Central Asia. It is instantly recognizable by its large flexible nose, which helps filter dust during migration and warms freezing air during harsh winters. Saigas once roamed Eurasia in enormous herds alongside Ice Age animals, but today they are critically threatened by habitat loss, disease outbreaks, and illegal hunting. These fast-moving antelopes migrate across huge distances in search of food and seasonal grazing grounds, making them vital to steppe ecosystems.
