The Golden Bird: Part 2

For (Fan) Fic Writer Appreciate Day (August 21st) I decided to bind The Golden Bird: Part 2, the second part of one of my absolute favorite fics EVER.

I tried to match the same style I did in my previous bind of Part 1 of the series, but still making it unique in itself.

The custom end papers were made from the painting Ganymede by Gabriel Ferrier with a book quote (one of multiple quotes i used in this bind as I couldn't pick just one since the prose in this story is so beautiful)

Foiled title pages because I love foil and have a lot :)

For the typeset itself, it is very similar to the one i did for part 1, except included some drop caps

Now for probably my favorite part of this bind - THE ART!

@thedaydreamingcynic has created some of the most beautiful art for the TGB and they were kind enough to let me include some of them in this bind.

The art was printed on transparent film and overlaid in the book with thin double-sided crafting tape.

Truly, all their art is stunning.

This bind was done as part of @renegadeguild Renegade Loves Fic(Writers), as a way to show appreciation to all the fic writers out there that share your amazing stories with us, by sending out a copy.

Greetings favorite writer ever. I am logging in to tumblr after two years in order to ask you this very important question. What is the fashion like in tgb?? I need this info for fanart purposes.

“favorite writer ever” /diesIf you put Ancien Regime France and mid-18th century England in a blender, you’d get Solasan fashion. (With the caveat that wigs are out of fashion at the time of the story’s opening.) Solas has a major textile industry, so the aristocracy and merchant classes wear lots of silk, velvet, and other high-end fabrics. Heavy embroidery is in vogue, especially on vests (men) and bodices (women). The lower you go down the social ladder, the shabbier and less ornate the embroidery gets. The lower classes wear much simpler clothing in cheaper fabrics like cotton and wool.

Crow’s Eye Productions has some GREAT videos on getting dressed throughout the centuries, which I referenced heavily for TGB. Noble and upper-class men; noble and upper-class women; working and lower-class women in the colder months and the warmer months.

The major way in which fashion in Solas diverges from fashion during the time periods I reference is that, because of the widespread acceptance of m/m sexual relationships, a lot of men dress for the enjoyment of other men. The Teahouse has a lot of examples of what this might look like (and is also delightful, if you haven’t read it), but think collarbone-baring necklines, off-the-shoulder and openwork sleeve styles, waistcoats and breeches cut higher to accentuate the legs and ass, shoes with a higher heel, etc.

Pleasure slaves wear clothing influenced by the male-gaze-oriented style discussed in the previous paragraph, but far skimpier and with a lot more jewelry. Pleasure slaves, men interested in men, and students are the three classes of bloke who wear their hair long.

Low servants, the rural poor, and slaves *not* for pleasure, like Connell and Doran, would dress a lot more like the men in this video and the women in this video, but without the headwraps. Simple shapes, coarse fabrics, loose and utilitarian designs.

Oh, and of course all slaves wear collars. These range from very ornate designs, for pleasure slaves and high-ranked slaves in wealthy households, to basic iron bands.

A PSA for pretty much everyone right now

Alright y’all, spring has sprung and it’s baby season! This is a PSA for anyone who finds themselves with a baby creature that has fallen out of its nest or is injured. I work with a licensed wildlife rehabber, and I see the results of improper care every day, and have to put down babies myself that were too weak and malnourished to survive because someone thought they could “save” them

Baby birds require extreme and scientific attention for them to live, and they will die if you don’t know how to take care of them properly, which, for the record, the average person cannot do. You need to take any baby bird you find to a licensed wildlife rehabilitator if you want them to survive. Baby mammals (squirrels, skunks, rabbits, etc) are even more difficult to care for and they risk deformation and abnormal development if they aren’t taken care of by someone who knows what they’re doing.

PETS!!!!!!

Wild animals are not, should not, and will never be good pets! I don’t care if you know a guy who has pet squirrels or a pet raccoon, they are wild heckin animals that will not thrive in captivity! It is cruel to keep them behind bars when they are built to live in the wild. If you want a cute, niche, exotic pet, do some extensive research and buy yourself a snake or a sugar glider!

Taking care of wild animals requires an extensive amount of tools, equipment, and hard-to-procure instruments. I have like three drawers filled with special tools that I can’t do my job without, including special feeding syringes, surgical tools, attachments for syringes, special heating pads, and a lot more that the average person doesn’t have access to.

DIFFERENCE!!!!

Not all baby animals need rescuing! If you find a baby bird that is fully feathered, walking around, and basically look like a tiny adult, leave them alone!!! Chances are their parent is close by and they’re learning to live on their own. Same goes for baby mammals. A good rule of thumb is that if you have to put any kind of effort into catching them or keeping them contained, they’re probably just fine and you should leave them alone. Not to mention the risk of the parent of a baby mammal possibly rejecting the baby if it comes into contact with humans.

A TIDBIT: IT IS ILLEGAL TO KEEP AND RAISE WILD ANIMALS IF YOU DONT HAVE A PERMIT AND LICENSE FOR IT.

This law is in place because the average human is physically incapable of properly rehabilitating a wild animal, and the wild animal in question will have its life endangered by well meaning people who try to “save” them.

TL;DR - You are not properly equipped to care for orphaned or injured wildlife, and you need to take any wild animal you find to a licensed wildlife rehabilitator if you care at all for that creature’s welfare.
