i hate when people ask “who you tryna look good for?!” bitch myself bye
I wrote about why everyone looking to get into publishing should volunteer at literature festivals.
So here’s B2W’s #JurassicWorld Fan Theory … SPOILERS AHOY!
Lots of people didn’t like THAT scene in which the Nanny gets eaten. They said Zara’s death was massively out of proportion and even that the scene is misogynistic, since the victim was female.
But what if I told you Zara’s death was totally ON POINT, based on something that follows through on every single character in the movie?? Check this …
OWEN - Raptor Whisperer Extraordinnaire. Never gives up, always does what needs to be done - SURVIVES
HOSKINS - typical suit who wants to play God, thinks he can control nature and is supremely arrogant with it, so DIES
CLAIRE - prissy corporate madam it’s true, but she’s good at her job and again, she does what needs to be done - SURVIVES
MASRANI - big shot dude who owns the park, says they can handle it when they’re in over their heads … He’s getting his pilot’s licence but reckons it’s just a formality, screws up by the aviary and DIES
ZACH - mean older brother at the start, but appreciates brother GRAY needs him to be strong because he’s so much younger; in response, Gray does what his brother tells him to and helps keep them both safe - BOTH SURVIVE
HAMADA and First ASSET CONTAINMENT teams - they believe they can sort the situation out without the full information or equipment (thus not doing their jobs properly) - ALL DIE
VIVIAN and LOWERY - both do what they’re supposed to in the control room in support of Claire - “I’m at work” / “Someone has to stay behind” - SURVIVE
PADDOCK SUPERVISOR - doesn’t really pay attention to where the Indominus Rex is or what she’s doing inside the compound - DIES
DR. HENRY WU - As a scientist, he is just doing what they asked him to, which is create dinosaurs for InGen, thus doing his job - SURVIVES
ASSET CONTAINMENT SOLDIER - when one breaks away from the jungle to try and escape the raptors by getting into the car with the boys and Claire, he reveals himself and them, putting them all in danger … AND DIES
BARRY - fellow veliciraptor whisperer, does what he’s supposed to in support of Owen - SURVIVES
PLUS!!!
ZARA
- is on the phone and not paying attention to her charges, so does not notice Zach and Gray have snuck off - DIES!!!
CONCLUDING, MY FAN THEORY IS:
Every single character in @jurassicworldmovie who does their job/what they’re supposed to do (even if morally dubious, like Dr. Wu) SURVIVES … Whilst everyone who DOESN’T (even if just a minor blip), DIES.
I thangyew ….
It’s so easy to get into a slanging match on social media ... Most of us are on the SAME SIDE! Duh.
I think all #writers need these ...

“The neverending scrutiny of female characterisation is good ... but only to a point. Movies, TV, novels and transmedia are entertainment, not education. What’s more, there is no such thing as a universally “good” character, anyway. The female characters I love may be the ones you hate or vice versa, but that doesn’t make either of us wrong. By the same token, writers MUST be able to have creative freedom, free from political agendas, regardless of how “helpful” positive representations might be to marginalised voices.”

On “good” characters:
“Good” characterisation means different things to different people. Something that had you gnashing your teeth in fury might be enlightening, charming, funny or even – gasp! - FEMINIST to another. There’s no accounting for taste and there’s always more than ONE way of seeing a character.

On Female Character role functions:
“Female character role functions are typically more reductive and less varied than their male counterparts. They’re more likely to be known by their label and by their relationship to a man and/or to a child: they’re the wife and mother; the love interest; the Mom Warrior; the mistress/ tart with a heart; the hardcore hottie; the damsel in distress that needs rescuing. Alternatively, these female characters will be known solely by their job: the secretary, the ball-breaking boss, the stripper. In other words, female characters are often not rounded, authentic-feeling PEOPLE.”

“The Girl Character”
In a group of male characters, “... the only thing that may set the woman in the group apart will be her FEMALE-NESS. This means she is probably one of the group’s girlfriends (or a wannabe girlfriend) and/or she will be “vampy” or “slutty”, using her “assets” (!) to get what she wants ... Either from the group and/or their enemies. If there’s two women in the group, the other one is invariably an ice maiden-type who’s more manly than the men: the men may confess to being scared of her and/or make fun of her, the subtext being that she’s “less” than a woman somehow.”

The Paradoxical Commandments
Kent M. Keith
“People are illogical, unreasonable, and self-centered. Love them anyway.
If you do good, people will accuse you of selfish ulterior motives. Do good anyway.
If you are successful, you will win false friends and true enemies. Succeed anyway.
The good you do today will be forgotten tomorrow. Do good anyway.
Honesty and frankness make you vulnerable. Be honest and frank anyway.
The biggest men and women with the biggest ideas can be shot down by the smallest men and women with the smallest minds. Think big anyway.
People favor underdogs but follow only top dogs. Fight for a few underdogs anyway.
What you spend years building may be destroyed overnight. Build anyway.
People really need help but may attack you if you do help them. Help people anyway.
Give the world the best you have and you'll get kicked in the teeth. Give the world the best you have anyway.”

From Geek Feminism:
The Bechdel-Wallace test or Mo Movie Measure (often simply Bechdel test) is a media test which was developed by Liz Wallace and became widely known after Alison Bechdel featured it in her comic Dykes to Watch Out For, where the character Mo explains that she refuses to watch any film that doesn't fulfil this short set of conditions:
1. the movie [media] has at least two women characters; 2. who talk to each other; 3. about something other than a man.

“Now, I’m a proponent of “if you’ve got it, flaunt it” AND that women *can* be more hardcore than a lot of men. Why not?? Writers can totally pull off a vampy female character or a hardcore hottie who is rounded and authentic. So the problem is not these two character role functions per se, just the fact they are OVERUSED, reductive and thus BORING.”
