DIANE VON FRUSTENBERG : TALES OF ENDEARMENT | I DON'T HAVE TO WEAR VINTAGE

Diane Von Furstenberg, probably the most charming designer on the planet, opened her country estate, Cloudwalk, and her personal wardrobe to blogger Natalie Joos. Known for her love of mixing vintage with newer brands, Joos was the first person ever granted access to DVF's extensive vintage collection. And once she got her hands on it she directed a photo shoot with models Tali Lennox, Laura Love, and Elizabeth Gilpin, and a video for her newly relaunched site Tales of Endearment. “It was a fabulous day. Natalie has a great eye and I love the way the photos turned out. Plus we are both two Belgian girls," says Von Furstenberg.

The beautifully shot video shows the models roaming around a lipstick tree, playing the ultimate dress-up, mixing items from DVF's personal archive with looks from the current collection. While she designed her first wrap-dress at 26, Von Furstenberg feels like her moment has yet to come. She says, "All of the sudden the old pieces and the new pieces are gelling. For the first time, as crazy as it may seem, I'm embracing the whole thing."

THECUTTINGCLASS: FUNDAMENTALS OF PATTERN MAKING : TUCKS AND GATHERS AT PRADA

As part of the recent menswear show, Prada also showed a selection of womenswear pieces that will be sold as part of Resort 2014. Among the womenswear pieces were a variety of examples of how tucks and gathers can be used to create shaping and fullness.

On the top half of the body clusters of tucks were often used to create the bust shaping as an alternative to the classic bust dart. On the bottom half of the body there were different uses of gathering to create fullness in the skirt.

The following images show some of the different uses of tucks and gathers in the collection and the show images are followed by an example of how tucks can replace darts to shape bodice pieces.

Blocked out the shape of the bodice to highlight the position of the tucks in the image below. 

The diagram below shows a bodice pattern where a classic bust dart has been used for shaping. The diagram also shows how the bodice sits when the bust dart has been sewn closed.

The diagram below shows the different shaping effects that you can get by using a single dart vs. using a series of darts or tucks.
