satansired:
Rin huffs a laugh. âOf course you do.â He doesnât look at the other now, instead he picks up the pace a little, adding various things to his basket so they can get out of the store and to home so he can make food. Heâs always happy when he can feed family, but also, heâs hungry too. âI bet heâd be up for an actual contest if you asked.â He shoots Yukio a sidelong glance, his eyes twinkling with cheer. âIf thatâs something you want, of course. I know I would, if I could.â Despite how heavy those words could be, there is no grief in them right now; heâs stating a fact. And he isnât really even thinking about his own father being gone right now â all thatâs really on his mind is that since Shirouâs best Meister was Dragoon, a gun throwdown is likely the most interesting, which Rin, a Knight, couldnât partake in anyway.
The smile vanishes at the question, and he stares into a fridge, as if contemplating whether to open its glass door. âWeâre gonna be here all evening if I list all the reasons,â he finally says, his voice low and â a little dangerous, though itâs clearly not targeted at Yukio himself. âLetâs just say, youâve got far more reasons to be thankful you still got your father than youâre aware of. Our dad left Mephisto to be our guardian after he was gone, and⊠well.â He has to stop for a moment to take a deep breath and remind himself not to break anything â this is a public space, not his home. âHe took what was left after the wreckage of Dadâs death, and crushed it to dust.â
âTousan would probably do it, but,â he paused, struggling to put his thoughts into words. âI guess a part of me would always doubt the validity if I won. As Iâve gotten older, Iâve got a lot better at ignoring my own illogical thoughts. However, I know already that if I were to go head to head with Tousan and I won, a part of me would always feel the only reason I won is because I was half demon. I know no one else who matters would feel that way, but some others might, and when they voiced this, it would only fuel my doubts. Better to leave it a mystery than put up with that.â
Despite knowing that the emotions coming off of his brother were not aimed at him, the hairs on the back of Yukioâs neck rose at Anikiâs tone. He carefully considered the otherâs words, saying a silent prayer of thanks that he didnât have to deal with such a situation. The few things Sir Pheles had done to interfere while Tousan had been in a coma were bad enough.
âIâm sorry you both had to deal with that, Aniki.â He wanted to add more, but was afraid it would sound like he was defending the elder demon. Which he would never do, at least when it came to his actions towards Aniki and Aniue. âYou shouldnât have had to deal with such a thing when you were already in pain.â
