Can We Stay Like This Forever?

Our first big argument. We were at your place. Lying down on your futon, watching anime together. It was some music anime or something. Romance. I don't remember the name. The music was fabulous though.
It was around midnight. We had just gotten back from a night out with some friends and decided to get some anime in. This one in particular always managed to get us really emotional. I remember watching one of the characters playing her piano. It was as graceful as watching an actual pianist recital..anime was always one of my favorite forms of entertainment. I was interrupted of my appreciation of said anime when you paused it and turned to look me in the eye.
"Do you still love me?" Those words rang in my head for what seemed like decades after they came out of your mouth. It was so abrupt and unexpected. How was I supposed to react? I paused before answering to attempt to recollect myself. "Of course I do, babe.." was all I could manage.
I had expected it. You took my hesitance as uncertainty, and a look of overwhelming sadness took over your face. I tried to embrace you but your response was to look down and gently push me away. I looked into your averted gaze and I could see the intense melancholic expression in those eyes that I was so in love with. It pained me to even witness that kind of sadness coming from you. I tried to explain my pause, but you didn't want to hear it.
You told me I didn't love you as much as I had loved you before. Where did you get that idea? You persistently pushed your thoughts..how I stopped telling you how much I cared. How I didn't seem like I had you as a priority anymore. What was I supposed to do? Did I mess up somewhere along this road? Our road? I wanted to pave a path for us that lead to happiness, but I guess I had lost sight of your happiness and just had my eyes locked on my own.
But that doesn't mean I didn't take offense. I launched counterarguments in my defense. I had work all day. Everyday. I was tired. Unmotivated. Stressed. Unhappy with my job. I come home and I have this needy girl wanting all of my attention when all I want to do is rest.
I didn't want to say any of that. But it all came out. I really didn't want to say it. I didn't even mean most of it to be frank. I just felt like I was being attacked. After my defensive argument was complete I stole a glance at your eyes. There was a mixture of pain and disbelief. I immediately knew I had went too far and tried to apologize, but before I could even try, you got up, ran to the door, grabbed your jacket and shoes, and left.
What should I have done? Should I have waited for you to come back and give you your space? I didn't want to admit that I needed you as much as I did. I was so stubborn. I didn't want to chase after you. But love makes us do crazy things. I stood up and began putting my shoes on when I noticed that you had put up a picture on the fridge.
Why hadn't I seen this picture before? When did you put it up here? It was a picture of me sleeping..it looked like it was from a long time ago. Where was this? It was outside..oh. I see..it's our bus stop. You're sly, aren't you? This is why you laughed so hysterically when you woke up and saw me snapping a picture of you on the bus, isn't it? You had actually noticed me before I even noticed you..
I continued putting my shoes on, even more determined to find you and make things better. I darted towards the door and opened it, and started a sprint to nowhere. But before I even got 10 feet out the door I nearly tripped over you. You were lying on the ground, covered in snow...the winter was rough at this time of year.
I knelt over and whispered your name. Your eyes opened..tears fell as soon as they did, only to freeze and line the curves of your cheekbones with frost. I told you how much I loved you. How I didn't mean those things that I said. I wanted you to know that I was so madly in love with you..it just was really hard for me to express myself. I was such an introvert my entire life..definitely not accustomed to the expression of affection.
I looked into your eyes only to be met by the most terrifying blankness I had yet to come across. I don’t think I had ever been frightened by a pair of human eyes before. I always theorized that eyes were windows into the soul...and for that moment, your soul was missing. As if my words had released your soul from your body. Your soul that had been in love with me..that had been in love with my own soul. I didn’t know what to say.
You sat up. Leaving tiny handprints in the snow beneath us. You scooted up towards my face and looked deeper into my eyes...your own with such beckoning emptiness. I was drawn into your gaze..I was searching for a sign of life. A sign of emotion. A sign that the woman I was in love with still existed. I was afraid that I had pushed you over the edge with this one final argument.
You gave me a kiss. Even that felt empty. I wasn’t sure how to respond. I couldn’t prepare. My lips hadn’t even puckered. My eyes didn’t close, either. I wanted to know if you were still there. I didn’t want to lose you. You had become my all. Everything. My world. All that I lived for. I couldn’t bear to live in this cruel world without you keeping me sane. Without your love making me feel like I had a purpose in life.
I picked you up. Carried you back to the house...making sure to take immaculate care of you. I didn’t want to damage you any further..there’s no insurance. They say that life insurance is important. That you need it. Bullshit. You have one life. There is no such thing as “insurance” for your life if you are alone like me. Or you.
We got back to the house. I walked by that picture of me without glancing at it. Straight to the room. It was impossible for me to stop worrying at this point. I laid you down and went to grab some clothes for you and myself. The snow had dampened our clothing and I didn’t want us to get sick. By this time I slowly started seeing your emotion and facial expression return. I hoped I had fixed things.
I’d be lying to myself if I said I didn’t mean what I said. Well..I’d be lying to you as well. I DID lie to you. I told you I didn’t mean what I said. I do mean some of it. A lot of it actually. I said all those cruel things when we were arguing...but those flaws I pointed out. Those little things you do that irk me. Those things you say that hurt me.
It’s all part of who you are. And no matter what, I’m in love with you, and I’m willing to put up with it. You can say all you want about there being other people out there far more suitable to be my partner...but what matters is that there are people out there better for them as well. And it’s not about what’s available. It’s about what I want...and I want nothing but you.
I can’t stand the idea us parting ways.
I climbed into the bed with you and apologized once more. Searching for the “soul” I had been looking for this whole time in your eyes. It was returning..so sluggishly. I wanted you back already. I needed you. I held you as close as possible as I dozed off into the night. Why did I fall asleep so soon? I wish I hadn’t. I don’t think I heard you reply after I told you “Goodnight. I love you.”
I really hope that the reason I hadn’t heard you reply was because I fell asleep. I hope I didn’t fall asleep quickly because you hadn’t replied at all. I can’t remember. It felt like decades.
I fell into a dream that night, though. It’s one of the only dreams I can recall nearly perfectly. Should I call it a dream? Perhaps it was a nightmare. I’m not sure. I’ll tell you about it another time, my love.
The next day, everything seemed normal...at least, in the morning. As the day dragged on, I noticed your morale slowly deteriorating. I was definitely worried. I didn’t want to bring back any memories of the previous night, so I decided to let it slide. I was afraid. I shouldn’t have been such a wuss.
The entire week, this reoccurring incident would happen everyday. Every single time I’d tell you that I loved you, you would avert your eyes and respond while looking elsewhere. I could feel our bond stretching ...and the very fibers in that bond were beginning to thin. I had no idea how to fix this. I’ve never been in a relationship before. I had no prior experience with close friendships. What was I supposed to do? I didn’t want to lose you. I didn’t want to cause you pain.
I didn’t intend to say anything, but it just came out that night. Dinnertime at the table. 7:23 PM.
"Do you still love me?" Those words rang in my head for what seemed like decades after they came out of my own mouth. It was so abrupt and unexpected. How were you supposed to react? You paused before answering to attempt to recollect yourself. "Of course I do, babe.." was all you could manage.
That hesitation. It was so..painful. It felt like my soul was ripped out of my living body, and my body was set to autopilot. I wasn’t sure what to do from there. This was an all too familiar situation. But I hadn’t had experience playing the game from this side of the field.
Those were the last words we exchanged that night. I left the dinner table and went to the bed. I closed my eyes. You hadn’t even decided to chase after me.
My eyes opened after my quick sleep. Or so I thought. I stole a glance at the alarm clock before searching for you. 6:39 AM. You were nowhere to be found. I wasn’t sure what to do. I had been asleep for so long. I felt fatigued. I hadn’t even finished my meal from the night before. It was still there on the table, half-eaten. Your plate was unfinished as well.
I don’t remember much after that week. Our relationship was falling apart. I could tell that much. Everything became routine. Nothing was full of emotion and happiness like they previously had been.
I remember seeing you a couple days later. Everything was awkward. I tried to make a decent conversation, I really did..but things just didn’t work out. It was too painful. I felt like...like you weren’t there with me anymore.
A month had passed. We both made our most valiant efforts to repair our relationship. And for a while, I thought it had worked. We could speak to each other normally again. Our smiles had returned. The laughing was regular once again.
I was on my way home from work. I was abnormally tired and I knew we had planned a date that night. I never really enjoyed coffee, but I decided to grab one to keep myself energized for our night. What harm could it do?
I walked into the nearest Starbucks. It was the biggest one in town...not my kind of place. I don’t really enjoy being around people. I ordered my plain black coffee and sat down at a table in the corner to await my beverage. That’s when I saw you.
I didn’t want to believe it. I saw a pair in the opposite corner of the lounge sitting together. I recognized the guy when I walked in. It was your best friend. The girl with him, now that I took an actual look at her, was none other than yourself.
It wouldn’t have bothered me to be completely honest. I don’t mind you hanging out with him. Talking to him.
But I saw you holding hands with him. Smiling that blessed smile that I no longer saw from you. I saw you give him a kiss..something we hardly shared anymore. I saw you cuddle into his shoulder, holding his arm.
Is this what you wanted? You wanted someone else? Was I unsatisfactory?
Did I hurt you to the point where you had to run away?
Do I matter so much to you that you couldn’t hurt me yourself, therefore keeping me around for the inevitable? I would find out eventually, on my own, should you not have told me yourself.
Finding out on my own...it hurts me far more than if I had found out from your own words.
I can’t even explain how I felt. My heart sank. I felt emptiness in my chest. My stomach dropped. I felt like throwing up. I wanted to cry. I felt so defeated...I wasn’t sure how to feel. So many mixed emotions. I wasn’t sure whether to feel angry or sad. I just decided to walk out. I didn’t even get my coffee. Fuck it.
As I rose and walked out there door, I managed to hear one thing as you spoke to him. My heart didn’t break. I don’t even think it existed anymore.
“Can we stay like this forever?”
