“I knew about the wedding,” Anakin said. “I read it on the Holo. It’s funny, actually, she’s always despised his books.” He stared into the green wine in his glass, his eyes glazed over by memory. “I’m glad she’s going to have another child. I can’t imagine how hard it must have been to give up the twins. She always wanted to have babies.”
Obi-Wan leaned back a little. “What about you? Were the twins… planned?”
Anakin’s head jerked up. “What? No, of course not. A secret marriage in the middle of a galactic war, and you think I got her pregnant on purpose? No, it was an accident. Why do you ask?”
“No reason,” Obi-Wan said, almost instinctively, then frowned. “No, that’s not true. It’s just… I’ve wondered, Anakin. Is this the life you would choose? You are a free man now. If you wanted — a family, children. You are still young.”
Anakin glanced up at him for a moment, then looked at the fire. He was striking, half his face bathed in silver starlight, the other warmed by the flames.
“Why are you asking me if I want to betray my vows?” he asked, his voice very soft.
“None of them are binding for life,” Obi-Wan said, equally quiet. “Only for as long as you are a Jedi.”
“But that’s the point, Obi-Wan,” Anakin said, meeting his gaze. “I am a Jedi. It’s not something that can change. It’s who I am, even before I am Anakin Skywalker.”
