‘During the war, she showed as much strength and bravery as she did on the track, helping to evacuate children from occupied France. When peace returned to Europe, her hunger for competition was undiminished. After a couple of unsuccessful sportscar outings in the aging Fiat Balilla she turned full-time to rallying in a Renault 4CV. For her first event, the 1948 Monte Carlo Rally, she was co-driven by fellow Thirties race starlet Madame Helle-Nice. They crashed out. Anne-Cecile was undeterred and returned to the Alpes Maritimes every year until 1953, when she hung up her helmet for good aged fifty-eight. ‘

In 1953, a nationwide investigation in Japan was set out to find the culprit responsible for a decapitated body. The head of the investigations team went on a search to find the culprit who befriended a man, murdered him, and took his identity. The sequence takes us into this real journey, Yukichi Watanabe and his 35mm black and white film camera. The images taken in the photobook are cinematic, having scenes remindful of a Kurosawa film (see Ikuru, 1952).The special units investigator, who appears in almost every scene is always determined. In the photograph, he is our protagonist, a Japanese Humphrey Bogart, on the telephone for leads that draw him closer to an answer. His hand is pressed onto the table, the viewer is focused on his expression.The chiaroscuro lighting over the investigator overpowers the image making the men (who are overpowered with light) in the distance seem less important. Through the series, there are ‘scenes’ of him smoking his cigarette in an open field, searching beneath bridges, alone and other men. The dramatic film-noir lighting makes it hard for the viewer to believe that this was a real documentation.
