Ellen Black: A History

Growing up in Philadelphia, it seemed impossible that Ellen could not become fascinated with the history of the United States. With a father that was a high school teacher and a mother that worked in an art gallery, she was always surrounded by history. In a place like Pennsylvania, the most prominent and fascinating stories of the past for Ellen, in particular, were those that she could see with her own eyes. Her first school field trip was to the Liberty Bell. She memorized the opening of the Constitution faster than anyone else in her class. She was an excellent student in all fields, but her favorite subject by far was History.

By third grade, Ellen had outpaced her classmates and her parents worked ceaselessly to afford her a private education where she could prosper. Her mother took up a second job and her father gave up his teaching passion to return to accounting, making more money even if he wasn’t quite as happy. Ellen was none the wiser, never burdened by her parents’ troubles. They refused to allow themselves to put that weight on her shoulders when they saw the endless potential that she had.

She wasn’t the most popular of girls but bullying rolled right off her back like water on her windshield. She maintained a calm demeanor and was kind when approached; after all, there was no more important aspect of politics than being likable. That didn’t mean Ellen went out of her way to make friends. When anyone made comments about her being unapproachable, Ellen was quick to defend herself. After all, if her opinions and future policies were popular, she didn’t have to have a lot of friends. All she needed for her future was plenty of votes.

It was their hard work that made it possible for Ellen to get into her first choice of college, Lovell University. Not the most obvious choice when Ivy Leagues had sent her thick acceptance packets, but Ellen had her reasons. The seclusion of the campus and the promise of a student body that felt the same about their education was the biggest draw for Ellen.

She wouldn’t pretend she wasn’t also fascinated by the horror and mystery surrounding the school now, though she wouldn’t be quick to admit that to anyone who didn’t outright ask.

the “best friend”: this is the face of ellen’s inner circle. this is the person she’s most proud to be friends with but this doesn’t mean ellen actually feels particularly close to them. she simply needed a good face at her side throughout college, someone she could trust not to screw up and make her look bad. a study buddy and someone to go to lunch with, this person is fully aware of the superficial nature of their friendship, but whether they're okay with it or not remains to be seen. open to: female characters

the best friend: this character is someone that ellen truly, deeply loves. from the moment they met, ellen felt a kinship toward them and she doesn't let those connections slide easily. she is protective and thinks of them constantly, though her actions might not always show it. after all, this character doesn't exactly have the kind of image that would make ellen look good. closed: ethan fawcett

the nemesis: everyone has that one student -- the one that challenges their skill and strengths and makes them work harder. while ellen might hate this character with a passion, she also recognizes and appreciates their necessity. without them to push, she might become passive in her goals at lovell. open to: anyone

the best kept secret: this character is someone ellen tries (and mostly fails) to avoid. ever since they met, ellen has liked her... liked her a little too much. she's a risk to ellen's entire life and future, every carefully laid plan coming unglued every time ellen spends too long thinking about her. she knows it's a problem, she knows she needs to cut all ties, but that's always easier said than done... open to: female characters

I suppose pride. My reputation is the most important thing, aside from my grades, and I need both of those things to be pristine in order to have a successful future, so... Pride, yes. Not the worst choice, if you ask me.

Confident. I’m always confident. What’s the point of doing anything if you don’t do it to your full ability and with self-assurance? I expect the best from myself.
