Obscure Reagents: Iris Lake & the Lunar Lachryma
Mundane Uses: Emotional catharsis | Mental clarity
Magickal Uses: Corruptive purging | Banishing
A sister to the many holy lakes of Ashenvale Forest, Iris of the northwest is yet another where the realms of earth and spirit converge. This islet long served as a repose for the shed tearstones of Elune, often manifesting on nights of especially heavy rain and unusually radiant moonlight. These lunar lachryma are powerful sources of clarification; both on the mind, and against profane forces.
Many believe that they fall when the Goddess Herself cries, though the reasons are widely contended. Some purport that the stones appear after the spread of corruption in the natural world, or perhaps from Elune taking the grief and burdens of Her devotees upon Herself. Lunar historians note from records that some tearstones of yore have curiously fallen on ill-fated anniversaries of past events, such as the coronation date of Queen Azshara, the eve of the Sundering, the creation of the Scythe of Elune, and so on; though no one is certain if this is mere coincidence or not.
Philosophers maintain, however, that Elune’s tears are poignant reminders on the purifying nature of weeping, and the healing which can arise from relinquishing one’s sorrows. These ideas are further solidified by the demonstrated properties of the lunar lachryma. In a mundane sense, their uses are primarily two-fold: emotional catharsis, and mental clarity. For example, one might seek a tearstone for temporary and gradual reprieve when emotional wounds run exceptionally deep, or completely consume one’s thoughts. The same could be said for severe mental and physical stressors; such as delirium from illness, Her tears reportedly washing away such ailments with an ephemeral calm. Magickally, the tears are particularly robust in the purging and banishing of corruption. Historically, Iris Lake and the lachryma became a pivotal location in rousing those trapped in their slumber across Ashenvale and Darkshore during the War Against the Nightmare.
There are a multitude of uses for the tearstones. The most common is to boil them for someone under corruptive magick in a stew-like concoction, the broth to be later imbibed by the afflicted. Those of the Elunian faith might affix one of the lachryma to glyph-drawing implements such as blessed chalk holders, the end of prayer beads, atop phials of moonwater, or into the covers of lunar librams. Naturalists specialized in the reclamation of corrupted earth may secure a tearstone to the base of their staves or armaments; or otherwise use them as a spell reagent in the pursuit of regrowth.
Obscure Reagents: Fallen Moonstones
A brilliant sheen glistens upon the stolen moonstone with a hint of something powerful within.
Mundane Uses: Physical strength | Invigorant
Magickal Uses: Magickal augmentation | Mana restoration
It is said that on rare nights, when Elune has reached Her fullest, shards of Her power are made manifest in the heart of Fallen Sky Lake: a body of sacred water in the south of Ashenvale, named so for its mythic liminality between earth and cosmos. The moonstones that appear on this isle possess an astounding potency, as if all the energy across the lunar cycle were coalesced at once into crystalline form.
Many legends, beliefs, and theories surround the Fallen Moonstones given their unknown origins. Some say that Elune divests Herself of excess magick for Her children to find in their most dire moments, gifts the stones as tokens of optimism, or delivers them earthward in answer to fervent prayers. More cynical notions purport that they are omens of an arduous future on the horizon, to be faced with the fortitude granted by Her moonstones. Others claim that they only fall from the streaks of a starshower during a full moon, when the ancestors are emboldened by the Goddess to ride across the midnight sky and leave a piece of themselves behind.
There are, however, certainties about the Fallen Moonstones. At the core of their essence, they grant strength to the weakened. Those greatly enfeebled by sickness can find their energy returned to them after consuming a tea, elixir, or potion infused with these crystals. The same can be said for sufferers of mana exhaustion, and even magick addiction. Because of this, Fallen Sky Lake was rumored to be a frequent haunt of surviving Highborne following the War of the Ancients as a source of relief from these plights. Fallen Moonstones are also said to greatly augment one’s spellcraft, especially those channeled from Elune. Some of Her faithful have sought to inlay a shard of these stones into their diadems, jewelry, robes, armor, and armaments. At times, used as a focus and source of empowerment; and at others, kept as a reagent for times of crisis. It is commonplace to crush or grind the Fallen Moonstones into a fine powder by way of mortar and pestle, or to place them into a steeping chamber. Due to their fragility, some have likened them to ‘moonglass’ or ‘skyglass’ colloquially, but they are entirely consumable when prepared correctly. Some affirm that those on the precipice of death may be brought back by the blessings of the Fallen Moonstones, though at a great sacrificial price in tandem. The story of Avrus Illwhisper is no small fable; and while his sacrifice is thought to have contributed to saving a child’s life, it is also speculated that an act of expunging corruption in Elune’s name serves an equivalent purpose.
keep debating if I should move my house to this spooky area
