I don't know how people have gotten things so backwards about polyminds but here's the sitch.

Polyminds can't be spreading misinformation about systems/dissociative disorders because they aren't systems and they aren't claiming to have CDDs.

Claiming polyminds are harming themselves by "purposefully dissociating their identity" is simultaneously perpetuating stigma against CDDs and ignoring the struggles the individual you're invalidating is going through that led them to this experience.

On that last note, ISF exists. And its OKAY that it is similar to how cdd systems present. Because cdd systems form. To help. You cope. Richard Schwartz noticed that verbally separating parts of someone's identity in to functional labels can not only help with emotional regulation and increase self empathy, but help identify past traumas and current struggles the individual might be overlooking due to high stress and emotional repression. The goal is the eventual collecting of these parts into one healed whole. Polyminds are using this framework to survive, cope, and heal where they have no other tools available. It's not the business of the system community to police their mental health and how they choose to verbalize their experiences.

Polyminds are not ripping off fictives by naming their parts after characters. Period. Everybody introjects. And if you can't see how someone, especially a traumatized or neurodivergent person, might feel comforted or empowered by representing a part of themselves by a character they love/relate to idk what to do with you. (This one really gets me going, y'all gotta stop being so gatekeepy puh-lease.)

If youre offended by the existence of polyminds its because youre approaching the situation in bad faith or with a chronic lack of information and a foolhardy attitude. You are the problem.

I’m going to play devil’s advocate here, full disclaimer: I don’t have lived experience as a polymind, and I’m open to being corrected if I’m off-base.

That said, I think part of the disconnect comes from people collapsing very different frameworks into one bucket.

From what I understand, polyminds aren’t claiming to be systems or to have CDDs. The way it’s usually described looks a lot closer to parts-based models (like action systems / parts language in The Haunted Self or similar frameworks) than to dissociative identity disorders. Semi-distinct parts, yes; but still under a cohesive identity, shared memory, shared agency.

If that’s the case, I don’t really get why that’s treated as inherently harmful or deceitful.

People already accept parts language in therapy contexts. We accept that someone can say “a part of me feels X” or “this side of me reacts differently” without assuming they’re fragmenting their identity in a pathological way. So if someone experiences their internal states as more differentiated and uses language to make sense of that, why is that suddenly framed as morally or clinically wrong?

I do understand why some people read polyminds as adjacent to endogenic discourse, especially given how messy syscourse gets online. But adjacency isn’t equivalence. Not every non-DID multiplicity model is making claims about dissociation, origins, or diagnosis.

I’m a system myself, so I’m not speaking over anyone here; I’m genuinely trying to understand how polyminds got pulled into system discourse in the first place, because from what I’ve seen, they don’t actually seem to be claiming systemhood at all.

If I’m missing something important, I’m open to being educated. I just don’t think flattening every form of internal differentiation into “endogenic misinformation” is doing anyone any favors.

Can we please stop saying "oh you believe in [this]? You're literally just a proshipper". There are many reasons why somebody would believe in proshipper ideology yet choose to not identify with the term. The biggest one being, the term is controversial.

Saying "I don't believe censorship is good, I think harassment is bad an unnecessary, and I don't think fiction affects reality on a 1–1 scale" will get you much less backlash than just saying you're a proshipper, so of course some people are going to prefer terms like "respectful anti" or "nuanceship". Not everybody wants to be in constant fear of death threats because they used a term somebody doesn't like.

Or the fact that the definition changes depending on who you ask, that's confusing. Even my definition might be considered wrong. Some people say just no harassment. Some people say no harrassment no censorship. Some people say the belief that fiction doesn't affect reality.

Or how about even when they get a definition, the definition is too vague. Like "fiction doesn't affect reality" is just straight up wrong, and somebody may not consider themselves a proshipper because of that. Or what is censorship? Do they mean banning books or getting rid of age restrictions that censor media? It is vague and it is confusing.

Let people label themselves, stop forcing labels onto others, and actually be respectful. You want to be an anti-harassment community? Stop harrassing confused individuals and calling them stupid.
