On Son Hak’s “death flags”
I sincerely don’t believe Hak is meant to die in Akatsuki no Yona. I’ll try to briefly explain why.
What many have pointed out as death flags for Hak in forum discussions are, in my opinion, false alarms which are, at best, meant to cause discomfort and generate doubts about his fate. I think this makes things more interesting.
“But the story really focuses on Yona’s fear of losing Hak.”
Indeed. However, in all due honesty, I could never see how this has to be a death flag. I’ve always interpreted it as 1) a way of emphasizing just how important Hak is to Yona (the development of their relationship is really important in the plot) and 2) the necessary catalyst for her strong desire of learning how to fight.
“What about Yona’s nightmare where Hak was unconscious and soaked in blood?”
The first part of her nightmare (where they flee the castle) actualy happened, so maybe we shouldn’t ignore the last bit. I believe that Hak will be in a situation where he will almost be killed / badly injured and Yona will finally be the one who protects him or saves him from certain death somehow.
(You know, I remember the almost-kiss scene where Hak meantioned that he kind of wanted to die just to see Yona’s reaction to his death [this is also a death flag for many people]. Well, he would see things better if he were not dead. So I think maybe this could have predicted a scene in which Hak is apparently dead, but couscious, and Yona is right at his side, crying desperately. After finally learning what her exact reaction would be if he died, he would then wake up and etc etc. Just a thought.)

Okaaay, but guys. Guys. Consider this: why would this mean that he has to die? That’s… rather dramatic, imho (I’ve seen people talk like this makes sense or like it’s the only way). Can’t Yuna make things different ruling all by herself as queen? Can’t Hak still be on the pitcture by her side somehow? Come on.
Last but not least: Akatsuki no Yona shares a lot of similarities with Reimei no Arcana and it does not need to be similiar in yet another way. It would be just lame. That’s all I’m saying.
