When class goes theĀ exact opposite from how I planned it
Itās okay.
Three days before Spring Break.
The kids are tired. Iām tired.
We can see the finish line, but right now it feels so far away that seeing it only makes things worse.
These are the days when just getting out of my house and into my car in the morning feels like a victory. The days when every tiny noise makes me cringe because Iāve had sensory overload since January. The days when the students have no time to let our classes get in the way of their social life.
And itās rough.
Today, I had to remind myself that itās okay.
No, not āitās going to be okayā or āit will all work out in the endā.
Itās okay right now.
Itās okay that I need a glass of wine or five with dinner tonight. Itās okay that my awesome lab for today got bumped to tomorrow because I didnāt have the energy. They can do a reading assignment instead.
Itās okay that I wasnāt perfect every minute of today.
And itās okay that my students werenāt perfect either.
Overheard in my classroom today:
Student A: Dude, can I borrow a pencil?
Student B: Sorry, I only have one.
Student A: It's cool. I love that we all start school with ten notebooks, sticky notes, highlighters, and like eighty boxes of pencils. By October we both see a broken pencil in the hallway, and it's suddenly the Hunger Games.
Me @ Betsy DeVos, likeā¦all the time. Just, with everything. All of it.
Hey Tumblr!
Iāve been thinking about my nine years as a middle school teacher.
Have they been worth it? Have I accomplished anything? Am I getting better or am I stuck in a rut? Where can I go from here?
Welcome to my attempt to figure it out.
Welcome to rants, lesson plans, venting, celebrating, and discussing the things we donāt have time to discuss while weāre trying to fit a lifetime into one class period.
