Unsure how to approach the subject, Vesper went straight for it. “What does Percy do when he’s not with me? Like proper things? Does he talk to people?” She asked stupidly. “You know, like.. I don’t know how to ask without.. saying too much..”

Pippa's face wrinkled in confusion. What was Vesper on about? "What do you mean? Of course he talks to people..." Vesper confused Pippa sometimes. She could be so direct at times while at others, being so vague as to be annoying. "He mostly hangs out with Valentine if I don't bring him along to something."

“Alright. Yes. Good.” She nodded. “Hey, so,” she coughed, squishing Fisher’s cheeks gently again. “What do I do with Percy when we’re not having sex?”

Pippa wasn't sure anything could have prepared her for the question that came out of Vesper's mouth. Her eyes widened and she blinked several times as her brain tried to process what she had just been asked. "You're...you're asking me?" She finally got out.

"Vesper, he's your boyfriend. Do whatever you want with him." Pippa paused as a thought occurred to her in that moment. "Do you guys actually do anything besides fuck?"

Pippa shifted her hold on Fisher as she rose and answered the door. "Vesper!" She exclaimed as the door swung open. "Are you here to see me or my brother?" She asked, stepping aside to let Vesper inside. "Because if you're here to see him, he's sleeping right now."

She closed the door behind Vesper. "But if you're here to see me, hi! Let's go in the living room!" She carted Fisher back into the living room and resumed her spot on the couch. "Do you want to hold him?" She asked, motioning towards Fisher.

Vesper had already held out her arms for Fisher before the door had opened, before she had even acknowledged Pippa. “Yes please.” She reached for him, hardly waiting for Pippa to hand him over. He was a good distraction, and also Vesper’s baby, so she made sure to give her full attention to him whenever she could.

“Yes, I’m also here for you too. Hey Pippa.” She gave a small smile, gently squishing Fisher on the cheek.

Pippa couldn't help but smile as she watched Fisher with Vesper. He let out a little giggle as she squished his cheek. "Isn't he just the cutiest patootiest thing?" She said, leaning over and tickling his back, which made him giggle again. "And I swear, he looks more like Percy every day... especially with these sweet little curls growing in." She ran a hand through the soft little hairs that were just starting to curl at the back of Fisher's head.

She looked up at Vesper. "Percy doesn't like when I say it, but I'm sure you'll agree with me that it's probably for the best that Fishy looks like him, you know? He doesn't need that reminder every day."

Vesper didn’t look at Pippa, only at Fisher, but she nodded. “He looks just like him. And only him.” She poked him on the nose, then sat him properly on her lap. “So.” She finally looked up at Pippa. “How have you been? How’s Percy been?”

"Oh, I'm fine. Got school shit going on. Same old, same old with me. Percy...seems fine...but you know how he is. It would be easier to herd alligators than get him to open up." She sighed. "How are you? Anything exciting planned for the weekend?"

Arlise’s head snapped toward Pippa.

“       But what could you have done?     ” she asked — not dismissive, not defensive. Desperate. “       I—I didn’t even know they were back together.     ”

The confession tasted bitter. She tried to remember the last real conversation she’d had with Percy — not a passing text, not a half-hearted check-in, but something honest. Something real.

It had been too long.

The realization hollowed her out. If he died tonight, the last months between them would be distance and silence. She might never get the chance to fix it.

“       And Percy…     ” Her voice trembled. “       He’s always been stubborn. You know he is. If we’d pushed harder, would he have listened? Or would he have just lied to us and gone back anyway?     ”

She dragged her hands up into her hair, fingers knotting tight at the roots as anxiety coursed through her. The waiting room felt too small. Too quiet. Like the air itself was pressing in on her lungs.

“       I don’t understand the hold she has on him,     ” she whispered. “       I never have.     ”

Alysa’s name didn’t need to be spoken again. Arlise could see her clearly enough — her image now forever tainted, mixed with Percy's blood.

Seb’s return pulled her upright.

He’s alive.

The words struck her first like disbelief, then like oxygen flooding back into her lungs. She hadn’t realized she’d stopped breathing until that moment.

But the relief didn’t last.

As Seb continued, each injury landed like a physical blow. Broken ribs. Bruised ribs. A head wound. A handprint around his throat.

Arlise felt the blood drain from her face.

“       That… that happened before?     ” she asked, her voice small and unsteady. “       He was hurt like that before and we didn’t know?     ”

The thought made her sick. How long had this been happening? How many times had Percy smiled through it?

Her gaze flicked to Pippa, horror dawning slowly in her eyes.

“       If someone put their hands around his throat…     ” she swallowed hard, forcing the words out, “       that’s not just a fight.     ”

Her fingers trembled in her lap. She couldn't bring herself to finished her thought. It hit too close to home.

Pippa broke immediately. "It's her, Seb. It's her." She began to sob, all her worry and guilt and fear coming to a boiling point. Seb pulled her into a tight hug. She didn't know how long Seb let her cry, but it felt like an eternity.

Finally, though, when the sobs had stopped, Seb gently pushed her back so he could look at her face. "Pip, how long-"

"Seb." They all looked up to see Will in the doorway, Morri hovering behind them. Will didn't just look concerned...he looked angry. Livid even. "I need to talk to you."

Seb sighed. "I'lll be right back." He gave both hers and Arlise's hands a squeeze before he straightened up and followed Will out of the room.

Pippa strained to hear the conversation, one her brothers clearly didn't want her to hear. But Will was never good at keeping his voice down when he was angry, so she caught some of it, including. "She's here. Percy must have got one good knock in." Pippa couldn't help but feel a little proud. Percy had hit her back? Good.

But then her heart shattered. "Seb," Will said, glancing into the room at her and Arlise. It was almost as if he was telling them too. "She's pregnant."

Pippa grabbed Arlise's hand as the room felt like it spun. "No." She whispered, turning to look at Arlise in horror. "No, she can't be. She can't..." If Alysa was pregnant, that would trap Percy to her forever...no wonder he'd tried to kill himself tonight. Fresh tears sprung into her eyes. "Why won't she leave him alone?" She whispered to Arlise.

Arlise hadn’t come to the Hart house to argue. She hadn’t even come to demand answers. She just wanted to talk to Percy — really talk — for the first time in weeks. She knew Alysa had been in his ear again. It was always Alysa, quietly pulling him away, building walls where there hadn’t been any before.

But none of that mattered now.

She followed Pippa up the stairs, her stomach tight, a strange dread settling in her chest she couldn’t name. She’d grown fond of Pippa over the years — unsure sometimes where she stood, but grateful for the fragile truce between them.

And then the door opened.

For a second, Arlise didn’t understand what she was seeing. Percy on the floor. Pippa swearing. The sound of a body being rolled over. Then the pill bottle slipped from his hand and hit the carpet with a hollow plastic rattle.

Her blood ran cold.

The room tilted. No. No, no, no.

She forced herself to move when Pippa barked at her. The trash can. Right. She grabbed it from beside the desk and dropped to her knees beside them, her hands shaking so badly she had to steady it against her thigh.

“       What do you need me to do?  ” Arlise asked, her voice thinner than she meant it to be. She didn’t want to be in the way or slow Pippa down.

"Just hold the trash can." Pippa said, forcing Percy's mouth open and shoving her fingers inside. It worked as intended, and she barely got her hand out of the way before he lurched forward and vomited into the can.

She couldn't help but breathe a sigh of relief after he'd vomited several more times, and seemed to become more alert. He was okay. He was going to be okay.

Percy leaned back, his head on her shoulder, and Pippa had never been more thankful to stare into his brown eyes. He looked exhausted, like a bone weary exhausted. "I just wanted to sleep." He said softly. The tone of his voice broke her heart. Something was wrong with Percy, and he needed help.

"I know." She answered, gently kissing his temple. Her heart rate was finally beginning to slow, and she turned to look at Arlise. Clearly, this had scared the shit out of her too. Pippa reached out a hand and placed it over Arlise's, giving it a squeeze. "Arlise, take him while I clean up." She said, grabbing the trash can. Percy wouldn't want the others to know about this.

Arlise didn’t even realize she was holding her breath until Seb forced the door open.

The world seemed to tilt.

The bathroom looked wrong—too still, too quiet, the air thick with the coppery smell of blood. And Percy—God, Percy—was crumpled on the tile like a broken doll, curls matted dark, skin far too pale against the spreading red beneath him.

Her stomach lurched, but she didn’t scream. Didn’t freeze. Didn’t look away.

Blood itself had never bothered her. But seeing him like that—lifeless, fragile, silent—sent ice through her veins.

Somewhere beneath the terror, instinct took over. Hospital hallways. Volunteer shifts. Watching nurses move fast, steady, calm. She’d always felt pulled toward it—toward helping, toward fixing what could still be saved. Percy never knew. She’d never told him.

Please let me still be able to tell you, she begged silently.

Seb’s voice cut through the haze. The towel was suddenly in her hands.

“Arlise, hold this… tight.”

She dropped to her knees beside Percy without hesitation, fingers pressing hard against his wrist, right where Seb had shown her. Her hands shook once—only once—before locking steady. Warm blood soaked into the towel, into her sleeves, into her jeans, but she didn’t notice. Didn’t care.

All that mattered was the faint, fragile hope that he was still here.

“       Come on, Percy,   ” she whispered, leaning closer, voice trembling despite her focus. “       Stay with us. Please… just stay.   ”

Pippa felt Seb brush past her as he went to grab his phone. Her ears felt like they were ringing. Her heart pounded and her breath came in gasps. He couldn't die. He couldn't. He—

Her ears weren't ringing. Percy's phone was. She stumbled into the bathroom and grabbed it off the counter. A. It said that A was calling. Her stomach felt like a rock had sunk in it. A could only be one person. Alysa. What had she done?

The phone slipped out of Pippa's hands, and she heard it crack as it hit the tiles. She didn't care. They could get Percy a new phone. But he had to live. She dropped to her knees opposite Arlise, intending to grab his hand. Instead, she realized with horror exactly why there was so much blood.

"Percy, no..." She whispered, lunging for one of the towels that lay on the floor from Seb's haste. She wrapped it around his other slashed wrist, mirroring Arlise's pose. Pippa looked at Arlise then, sure that Arlise's desperate expression was a mirror of her own. Percy had slashed both of his wrists. He was trying to die.

"Percy, please." She begged, lowering her head to press against his shoulder. "Please don't leave me."

Arguing with Alex in the hall was getting Vesper nowhere, so she was somewhat relieved to see Percy coming down the hall. That was until she saw his face, and saw Pippa following behind him. By the change in Alex’s body language, Vesper sensed he was ready for a fight. His cocky composure once again sent a silent rage through her body.

As she watched the two fight, she looked nervously over at Pippa. It was embarrassing seeming so scared, but hearing the two men raising their voices jolted a memory in her mind she had buried years ago.

She was struck out of her thoughts as a freezing block of ice dropped into her stomach. What Vesper does best. She felt like she had been punched in the stomach. Alex. Out of everyone. She had gaslit herself into thinking he didn’t think that of her and hearing the truth made her dizzy. She hadn’t been able to respond before Percy threw his fist into Alex’s face, snapping Vesper out of it and forcing her to lunge forward with Pippa to stop the altercation.

“Percy!” She yelled, tugging at his arm. “Alex! Stop!” She shoved him backwards and away from Percy. She watched him spit blood on the ground and slowly walk away. He didn’t even give Vesper a second glance.

She turned her attention back to Percy who had apparently said something. She didn’t hear what he had said, so she cupped his face in her hands. “You’re bleeding!” She stated the obvious. It was easier than thinking of Alex.

Pippa stared at the two of them. Percy was bleeding, and he didn't seem to notice...or care. Slowly, Pippa grabbed his hand and lifted it up to look at it. He'd split his knuckles open and Pippa bent them several times so try and see if he's broken his hand.

"What are you doing? Stop it." Percy yanked his hand out of her grasp.

Pippa glanced in the direction Alex had walked off in. Percy had Vesper to take care of him...clean him up. Alex had no one. She knew he wasn't going to go home and let Calliope see him like that. "Maybe I should-" she started.

"You're not seriously thinking of going after him right now, are you?" Percy snapped. It was like he could read her mind. "After everything that just happened? After everything he just said?" Percy looked between her and Vesper several times before scoffing and pulling himself from Vesper's grasp. "And you called me a fucking idiot." He muttered, turning away. He didn't want to watch her chase after Alex.

Pippa looked at Vesper, unsure of what to do. Percy had a point, she shouldn't go after Alex, not after everything he'd said about Percy...about Vesper. But her heart still wanted to soothe him. Maybe she was finally starting to understand some of Percy's decisions. Love made you stupid.

"Maybe you should take Percy home." She said softly, looking away from Vesper's face. "Those cuts should be cleaned up and he'll need an ice pack for his face." She felt tears prick at her eyes which made her feel even stupider. She should go home. She should just-"I'm gonna go back to the house." She said softly, leaving out the second part, where she hoped Alex would come to her.

Pippa dutifully led Arlise up the stairs towards Percy's bedroom. "He said he's not feeling well, so he may not want to see you." She shrugged, glancing back towards Arlise as they reached the top of the stairs. Aunt Jo had been very firm that no one was to bother Percy, but those rules never seemed to apply to Arlise. Maybe because she wasn't family. Maybe because they all knew something was going on with Percy, and Arlise was probably the only person who might actually get through to him.

Pippa lightly tapped on Percy's door before opening it. "Percy? Arlise is-shit!" Percy was crumpled on the floor on in a heap, and he let out a groan. She dashed over to him, dropping to her knees and rolling his onto his back. "Percy, what-" His arm dropped and she saw the pill bottle roll out of his hand. Aunt Jo's sleeping pills. "What the fuck did you do, Percy?" She hissed, realizing what was happening.

"Arlise, grab me the trash can." She said, glancing up as she hauled Percy into a sitting position, his back leaning against her chest. He wasn't going to like what she was about to do...but then again, she wasn't exactly enthusiastic about shoving her fingers down his throat until he vomited either.

Vesper have a smile she hoped didn’t come across as fake, but more comforting. “It’s okay, I understand. I know all about how he used to feel for Arlise and I’m sure he’s over it by now.” She said, ignoring the voice in her head screaming that she was lying.

“You know Roger? I don’t remember if you ever met him, but I know I’ve talked about him a lot,” she smiled unintentionally after saying his name. She didn’t want to admit it - especially to Pippa, but she liked bringing him up. “I used to have a weird crush on him, and, like, I don’t feel that way at all now.” She laughed awkwardly. “Plus, I know Alex was always weird about him.”

"Well, Alex is weird about every guy who isn't him." Pippa sighed. She had definitely heard Ves mention Roger before. In fact, almost up until Ves started hooking up with Percy, she had never shut up about Roger Sorrengail. Pippa only realized now that she had stopped. Was that...was that a good sign? Judging by her smile, Ves probably still had feelings for him...the same way Pip knew Percy still had feelings for Arlise. This could be trouble.

Pippa reached across the table and grabbed Vesper's hand. "Well, as long as you two communicate with each other, what happens between you is your business." She tried to give a reassuring smile. They usually came across as grimaces though. She had a bad feeling in the pit of her stomach. "Just...give yourselves a chance."

Vesper immediately felt guilty. She had to work on controlling her facial expressions. She also had to admit that Alex was kind of an asshole.

“I get it though, don’t worry. I also think Alex and Percy are polar opposites. Or, at least they are for me. Percy cares about me.” She shrugged, then realised how bad that sounded. “I mean, Alex does too, but.. it’s different..”

"Look, it's not my place to judge your relationship with Alex. You've known him longer than I have." Pippa said softly. Vesper and Alex had grown up together, living in the same neighborhood. Vesper was the reason she and Jacquetta were even friends with Alex, what with him being a grade ahead of them in school.

She let out another sigh. "Anyway, it's not just Alex." She didn't know if she should even bring up what was on her mind. But if she couldn't talk to Vesper, who could she talk to? "It's... Jacquetta." She said softly. "It's like, nothing Percy does will ever be the correct move for her. Because Arlise had a crush on him when they were younger, she doesn't want him seeing anyone else, yet she also doesn't think Percy is good enough for her sister either. It's... immensely frustrating. Arlise isn't even single. Why should Percy be expected to just wait around for her when she never did for him?"

Pippa paused, realizing maybe this wasn't a good conversation to have with Vesper right now. After all, she wasn't talking to Vesper just in the capacity of best friend anymore. She was talking to Vesper in the capacity of Percy's girlfriend. "I...shouldn't have said all that. That was inappropriate. To be honest, I don't think he's even interested in Arlise anymore. They haven't even spoken in...I don't even know how long it's been now. Probably since he went to the hospital last year." She was rambling now, trying to smooth over any discomfort she had caused.

Vesper laughed nervously, once again averting her eyes. “Yeah, I mean.. when’s he gonna get his karma?” She spoke, knowing how insincere she sounded. She stabbed around her plate, making too much noise as there was barely and food left. “Maybe.. maybe I can try and help Percy become a little less meek. I don’t want him to be embarrassed… around me.”

"I'm sorry. I shouldn't talk about Alex like that." Pippa sighed, sensing Vesper's discomfort. "He's your friend too and I shouldn't drag you into the middle of it." She pushed her plate away, done with her lunch. Alex was just pissing her off so much. It seemed like everyone was pissing her off. Everyone but Vesper.

"It just feels like no one wants Percy to be happy." She blurted out. "Like, because he's been miserable for so long, that that's how he's supposed to stay or something. I don't get it."
