This is the one of the very few photographs of the Wondiwoi Tree Kangaroo - a species recently rediscovered with the very image. The Wondiwoi Tree Kangaroo was thought to have gone extinct 90 years ago. There are 17 species and subspecies of tree kangaroo and it was thought that the Wondiwoi was lost. The photograph itself was taken by Michael Smith, an amateur botanist, in New Guinea. He stated, “After a lot of scrambling around trying to get my lens to focus on the animal peeking out from behind the leaves, I got a few half-decent shots.” The images he took were clear enough to determine it was a Wondiwoi Tree Kangaroo because of its distinctive fur coloration.
