ATWELL’S GOLD

Summer: the time when homos bake and cheeses melt in the sun. You know that all of your friends are going to bring wine to the beach, so why not class it up by being the one who brings the cheese?
Rhode Island isn’t the first New England state I think of for cheese, but I saw Narragansett’s table at a local farmer’s market and obvi had to swing by. They had a lot of basics - mozzarella, feta, ricotta - but also a few signature items.
Atwell’s Gold is their Italian-style cheese. Take a run-of-the-mill cheddar and amp up the salt and firmness, and you’re heading in the right direction. It’s a nutty, dry cheese that would go great in grilled cheese. On its own, it didn’t blow me away, but it was solid.
