In the 80′s Real Ghostbusters comics they decided that Slimer was in fact the ghost of a person who lived a life of greed and gluttony, which was discovered when Peter went back in time and befriended him. Then peter tried to teach him to be a better person and take better care of himself but Slimer in the present started fading away. So the other ghostbusters had to go back and stop peter from changing history. They needed that man to die in his sins because his malformed soul is their favorite funny animal.
