we all hear about kudzu being introduced as "erosion control" in the South but I don't think contemporary people understand on a gut level what that means

these are images from a 1930s pamphlet that endorsed kudzu, entitled "stop gullies: save your farm"

Invasive plants need to be understood as part of a much larger cycle of incredible violence against the land.

For context: erosion on that scale occurred as a result of our clear-cutting entire states. The land east of the Mississippi used to be covered in old-growth forest to an extent that we literally can’t imagine anymore, because most of us have never seen a forest over 100 years old. It turns out if you remove all vegetation from a landscape, you end up with a bunch of loose soil ready to move downstream. A fast-growing plant that covers everything in dense vegetation sounds like salvation when you’re surrounded by 40-foot deep gullies that get wider with every rainstorm.

A lot of the south too was covered in Canebreaks, basically bamboo forests like a lot of South Asia, I don't know the specifics of the ecology, but bamboo being a grass I assume is rhizomatic like other grasses and forms a big net of roots that prevent erosion. *I assume* (pleez ecologists weigh in)

Yes, the destruction of Canebrakes was a direct cause of this erosion we see here. Canebrakes were destroyed, using slave labor, to make room for cotton plantations. You can read about it here.

Canebrakes built up incredibly rich, fertile soil and are amazing at preventing erosion. They form incredibly strong mats of rhizomes. And their roots are known to go 10 feet deep into the soil.

The erosion we see in these pictures was a result, very much directly, of the Canebrakes being destroyed.

This is a case study in how violence against ecosystems goes so closely hand in hand with violence against people. The violence against the indigenous caretakers of the land, and the violence against the enslaved captives that were forced to clear the Rivercane and work the cotton fields that would degrade the soil into nothing.

i would strongly disagree with that. Yes, he designed one of the most famous building ever in the international style, the world trade center, but that wasn't until well into the development and adoption of the style across the architectural world. If anything, the main motif of his career is his arches, and he used them liberally at a time when the arch was well fallen out of favor specifically because of modernist styles like the international style that were obsessed with the advantages of the kind of squared off shapes that could be achieved with steel beams, with the architectural world moving away from more traditional arches. He did a lot of really cool and interesting things with them. it's why the bottom of the WTC looked like that. The man loved an arch.

One of the things that bears repeating before the hot weather takes over is that once your body reaches a certain temperature you can no longer count on making good decisions that you would normally make and you can no longer count on your physical coordination.

Keeping yourself as cool as possible isn't being weak or wimpy. It's protecting your capacity to think and move well if you need to.

In France and other countries last week it was clear that some people died from doing things they never would have done had they been thinking clearly. That confusion can happen to anyone and it comes sooner than people expect. Please, my Tumblr friends in places that will be getting very hot this week, be safe! Don't tough it out and don't take chances. Go somewhere cool if you can and of course, hydrate!

tiktok and twitter and instagram are evil for all the obvious reasons but one thing that really pisses me off is how impossible is it to find ANYTHING that wasnt posted like 72 hours ago or less. one of the things I love about tumblr is how easy it is to go through a blog's archive and even filter by specific dates, post format, and tags to find something you posted years ago and even the blog search function works marginally better than it used to. on those other sites if you remember something that was posted years ago you will never find it again

the idea that hurt feelings should always be accommodated is a nice one until you realize a lot of abusive and controlling people are hypersensitive and overly critical

they may still be people, but a lot of abusive actions and controlling actions come from a place OF hurt feelings, and no, they don't have to be accommodated or tolerated. A jealous boyfriend who demands his partner no longer have contact with her life long male friends is acting out of insecurity and hurt but he is harming his partner and being controlling. A girlfriend who spends her day criticizing her partner's every perceived flaw until they break down in tears may have kicked the round of verbal abuse off by being hurt by an initial incident where the partner has done something that has upset her, but that behavior is unacceptable.

what is actually helpful in discouraging abusive behaviors is pushing forward the idea of empathizing with the people they are damaging and how it is unacceptable and not justified by their own sense of hurt instead of pausing the sentence on a "well your feelings are valid." not every emotional reaction is a sacred cow that everyone must accommodate in spite of their own boundaries, mental health and own feelings.
