I want to go to one of the pubs where you pick the fish out of the tank. But that would require driving out of town.
Can I afford to stay overnight somewhere? Can you brings kinds to a pub?
The laws are all changing so quickly these days…
“If you want to go on vacation, Uncle, I can take care of Nanako for you. We’ll be fine on our own. Maybe take Adachi-san with you. You both deserve some time off.”
“Wow, that—“
“Wow,” is all I can say. “That would be much appreciated. Are you sure that you’re up to it?”
“Of course. I’ve done it plenty of times and when I was at home in Tokyo too. Don’t worry just have a good vacation.”
“Thanks!” I find myself sighing in relief. “I’ll start planning it, then.” I shuffle some papers around on the table, happy to think about NOT thinking about work for a weekend.
I could really use a break.
I set everything down and face my nephew. “How has school been? Adjusting alright?” I try.
He gives his uncle a smile before sitting down next to him.
“Of course. Schools going fine don’t worry about my grades I’m doing perfectly fine.”
I cross one leg over the other and sigh. “I wasn’t worried about your grades, but now that you mention it…”
I roll my eyes and chuckle. “Did you join any teams or clubs?”
He propped his elbows on the table and rested his chin in his hands.
“I joined the basketball team and the drama club. I even made some friends there.”
How many cats dir you bring into my house? You are not a cat, you are a person. And we have rules.
He flinches a bit at his uncle’s question clearly guilty about what he did.
“I kind of lost count… I’m sorry for doing this without your permission, uncle.”
He’s noticeably uncomfortable with getting grilled like this.
“Ahh geez,” I sigh, running a hand through my hair. “Don’t get all twitchy on me. I only want to know what’s been going on in my house.”
“Do you want to try and find all the cats, and then we can talk? Do you know how many are in here right now?” I question, maybe missing the reason for my nephew’s anxiety.
He gives his uncle a nervous laugh before glancing up to give his guardian eye contact.
“N-not really but they all should be in my room unless Nanako let them out because they were scratching on the door.”
He was still visibly nervous but it wasn’t because that he did something wrong it was because he disappointed his uncle.
I fold my arms and groan. “This is going to be okay,” I reassure myself. “Your house is not filled with cats…”
I chant it one more time, hoping it to be true.
“Why don’t we go take a look?” I finally manage to ask my nephew. “I’ll help you get them back outside. At least some of them probably have owners.” I massage my temples ans start for the stairs.
“You first,” I nervously order. “I don’t want to invade your space, but we need to take care of this.”
“R-Right..” The boy nods leading his uncle up to his room listening out for any meows but didn’t hear any.
He frowned a bit and decided to step more into his room and began to search around for the many cats he had rescued from the bad weather they had been having.
“Let me know when it’s alright to come in—“ I shout at the once-again closed door.
He searched around but only found one asleep on his futon and picked it up gently petting it softly as it yawned and looked at him.
Yu then decided to open his door and let his uncle into his room. Other than the cats he had nothing to hide.
“I think they all ended up leaving my room st some point. Probably through my window. I only found this one asleep on my bed.”
My eyes widen at that—
“Yu! We’re on the second floor! Are they jsut climbing down the side of the house?!”
I groan and wipe my hands down my face. “Let’s make this simple: Just don’t let any more in and keep the window closed when you’re not home, alright? We’ll put this one outside, too.”
I walk towards him expectantly, hoping Yu hands over the last cat without a fight.
He nods and this and hands over the cat without a fuss.
“I can do that uncle. Try to make sure when we do put that one outside that the others won’t come scurrying in.”
I can feel the blood draining from my face at the thought of a cat stampede. “Yes, I’ll, ah—Make sure.”
I hurry downstairs and bring the cat to the front door. I crack it open and look around. I don’t see any cats… I quickly toss this one to the curb and slam the door.
He sighs following his uncle downstairs shaking his head.
“You have to be more gentle with animals, uncle.”
“I—Ah—That’s—“ I stumble over my words, flustered that I’ve been caught shooing the cat away like that.
“It’ll be fine,” I quip, folding my arms. “This house is on lockdown. No. More. Pets.”
He gives a curt nod folding his arms across his chest also.
“I understand but in return you have to at least try to be nice to the ones we have. No treating them roughly. It could cause them to have issues with humans.”

“Has Adachi eating anything today? Maybe I should make him food later.”

❝ Excuse me? Are you Nanako Dojima’s ‘big bro’? ❞ The teacher stood by the front door, having waited there for someone to arrive. She had serious concerns. She’d witnessed Nanako write about a man in a bear suit and she just wanted to make sure she wasn’t hanging out with suspicious adults when she wasn’t supervised. Sean had tried calling but no one answered. Not even Nanako. This was worse than being trapped in that damned blue room. ❝ I am Miss Sean Cloverfield, her teacher. ❞ @cloverjellies
The boy blinked a bit before nodding.
“I am. Are you here to see Nanako?”
Yu doubted his cousin was in trouble but wondered exactly why her teacher had stopped by for a visit. Dojima was busy at work and Nanako had told him earlier that she was over at the Hanamura’s to see Teddie. He hoped that she hadn’t been waiting out here for too long.
“Why don’t you come inside? If you’re hear to see Nanako I’m sure she’ll be back soon. Unless you’re hear to see Dojima-san. That might be a while.”
@cloverjellies
She gave a nod of respect. He was just as well mannered as Nanako, ❝ yes please, thank you. ❞ returning to his earlier question there was just a shake of the head. Sean cleared her throat, unaware of how to word what she was to say next.
❝ Nanako isn’t in trouble. I simply have a concern and it made more sense to ask those in her life directly rather than her, ❞ god there really was no other way to say this, ❝ Nanako wrote in her weekly journal that she has a friend named ‘Teddie’ who walks around dressed as a bear? ❞ straight to the point as always.
It could have been fantasy or a character the girl made up but Sean couldn’t shake the feeling this creature was real. And what type of teacher wouldn’t check up on something that sounded so shady?
“Oh…”
He honestly wasn’t sure how to explain or react to the situation. He pondered this for a moment before trying his best to explain Teddie and his situation.
“Teddie is actually one of my friends relatives it’s just a nickname he goes by and he works for Junes as a mascot which is why Nanako wrote that.”
It wasn’t exactly a lie but it wasn’t exactly the truth either.
She raised a brow, ‘a mascot for what?’ Leaving this question her mind she decided it would be an appropriate time to make a small joke, ❝ for televisions? He seems like he popped right out of one! ❞ the joke wasn’t all that funny but then again neither was she. Realizing this she gave a nervous chuckle. Sean thought she was funny when those in the velvet room would laugh at her jokes. Maybe she could try another?
❝ What do you call a man with a long nose and infinite wisdom? Vague! ❞ that one always got a chuckle! Then again it was her first time saying something like that in a long time… she was spending too much time working and not enough socializing.
He raised a brow at her first joke but decided to laugh at it. He wasn’t hurmoring her he actually did find it funny. But he wondered if she actually knew Teddie did come from the TV.
He cracked a smile and the other one letting out a small chuckle. This one actually tickled him since it held some truth towards Igor. Once again though, his curiously was piqued and he wondered how much she knew about what was going on in this town.
“I’m sorry I’m sure you know my name already since you’re Nanako’s teacher but I’m Yu Narukami.”
He gave the woman a smile before holding out his hand towards her in a friendly gesture. Some small part of him wondered if she too had an arcana attached to her.
It was hard to tell if she simply didn’t want to shake his hand or if she was caught off guard as she slowly reached out and gave a shake. The World Arcana, one usually revealed to someone who is about to change the world or has done so already. Often before a large event in their life. As her’s was revealed she noticed one familiar. The fool was a card she often saw paired with what she would call “changing leaders” who would go from being simple to leaders against something. Though she hadn’t done so in a few generations of heroes. About five or so generations? It was hard to tell with her lack of time sense.
A card known for new beginnings and infinite potential. She often associated Nanako, who she knew as a Justice Arcana as such because of her childhood innocence and budding genius. She of course didn’t know something so… personal to her was shown.
❝ A pleasure to meet you young man, I am Sean Cloverfield. You may have also heard it before from the bakery in the area! Though it isn’t too popular… ❞ she gave a nervous laugh at the mention of her failing business but it was something to change the subject away. There was too much unknown and too much to know and never tell.
He blinked a bit as the familiar warmth he usually got when a new social link had been revealed to him bloomed in his chest. The world arcana that was interesting he made a mental note to go to the Velvet Room later to ask Marget about it.
For now, he gave the woman a smile and nodded as she mentioned her shop. He recalled seeing it a couple of times while he had been out and decided that he would stop by soon mostly to buy some sweets for Nanako.
“It’s nice to meet you, Cloverfield-san. I actually remember seeing your shop a couple of times. I’ve been meaning to stop by I’ve just been really busy.”
❝ No worries. The shop is always open. As the elder brother of a student, I’ll give you a discount! ❞ he wouldn’t have to worry about not being recognized in the shop since most days it was only Sean who worked there. Just because she couldn’t afford employees to work most days. She’d rather spend her money on making sure all the ingredients used were high quality.
Her handshake was nice and firm. She had obviously practiced quite a bit, or maybe it came naturally from spending such a long length of her existence around such formal folk? It remained for the appropriate time before she pulled back. Something about him seemed strange. Maybe if she asked normal questions it would reveal something to her.
❝ Do you spend a lot of time watching tv? I heard from Nanako that you used to stay up for a very long time doing such. It’s bad for your health! One day you might wake up and not even be able to see your own shadow, ❞ she then gestured to her glasses. She was just too curious for her own good sometimes.
He held up his hands dismissively laughing a bit.
“You don’t have to do that! I’d feel bad taking away profits from you.”
He blinked a bit ather second question trying to figure out how to best respond without revealing too much. He still wasn’t sure how much she actually knew.
“I used to not so much anymore but if Nanako is watching something I watch it with her. I do like Tanaka’s Amazing Comodities though.”
He mustn’t have been who she thought he was afterall. She expected him to answer with shock but instead it was a simple answer any teen may have given. To this she gave a smile and felt a bit of a weight lifting off her shoulders. Thank god he hadn’t gone through the same lose of time as she!
❝ I see! Products made for the television world to view! ❞ the wording was funny sure but she wasn’t implying anything anymore! She just had a horrible way of wording things.
Looking at her watch her eyes her wide, ❝ it looks like I may have to go! Those puff pastries need to be made before tonight or I may not have enough for tomorrow! ❞
He smiles chuckling at her wording. The way she said that reminded him of the time he met Marget’s sister, Elizabeth.
“If you have to go I can walk you home if you’d like. I have plenty of free time until I have to go get Nanako.”
